Facilities Use: General Guidelines All Academy students are expected to respect the staff, faculty and student workers supporting their learning environment. Students found in violation of any procedures, hours of operation or guidelines provided herein will be subject to disciplinary action. Iovine and Young Hall (IYH) Creator Studio and the Garage Incubator (SKS 404) are shared learning spaces. These guidelines have been developed in order to better sustain an environment of respect for each other, and for learning and making processes. Student Conduct • The USC Student Conduct Code applies at all times throughout all Academy facilities. • Be mindful that every student is a representative of the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy. • Academy faculty and staff are here to educate, assist, and ensure safety. Abusive language or behavior toward, or treatment of, any staff – including student workers – will not be tolerated and will result in referral to Student Judicial Affairs and Community Standards (SJACS) for disciplinary action. Facilities Access and Security Student Access • A valid USC Student ID that has also been authorized by the Iovine and Young Academy is required to access IYH Creator, Mixed Reality, and Podcast Studios; cohort studios, classrooms, and student conference rooms; as well as the Academy Garage located in Steven and Katherine Sample Hall (SKS). • No students are allowed in IYH 2nd floor classrooms except during scheduled class times. Students using empty classrooms for meetings or other purposes will be asked to leave. Guests • Guests are permitted into IYH 1st floor cohort workshops and 2nd floor meeting spaces for approved project requirements only, and never during class or other scheduled sessions. • Guests are not permitted in IYH’s Creator Studio, 2nd floor classrooms; or the Garage Conference Room (located in SKS) without written approval from the instructor of record or the Makerspace Manager. You are responsible for the actions of anyone you invite into Academy facilities. • Guests are never allowed to use Academy systems or equipment. All equipment checked out by an Academy student must remain in that student’s possession at all times. All meeting room or classroom equipment must be operated by Academy students only. Once again, you are responsible for the actions of anyone you invite into Academy facilities. Iovine and Young Academy Facilities Handbook 3
Facilities Use for Extra-Curricular Projects The Academy’s facilities and equipment are intended to be used in both course- and career-related projects. Facilities and equipment are prioritized for course-related projects. However, students may request to use equipment for non-course or career-related projects if the following conditions are met: • Use of the facilities and equipment is for small-scale prototyping only. • Use is not for large-scale or mass production of objects for personal gain, including for-profit or non-profit activities. • Students are not producing items to sell for themselves, student organizations or events, or other purposes. • Students are not using equipment to fulfill commissions or paid services. Mass production of any objects is expressly prohibited. • The project does not interfere with other course-related projects or inconvenience the Academy staff and faculty. Course-related projects will always have priority when access is an issue. Permission forms can be obtained from IYH Creator Studio staff. Forms must be signed by a full-time Academy faculty member and must include the faculty member’s agreement to mentor the project. Signed forms should be submitted to Jacob Patapoff in IYH 104 prior to beginning work on the project. Safety • Under no circumstances shall anyone compromise the security of any Academy space. This includes propping of doors, which is expressly forbidden by USC safety protocols. • Do not permit entry of anyone you do not know into classrooms, conference rooms, or limited- use outdoor spaces, including the SKS balcony. Refer requests for access to Academy staff. • Be aware of your surroundings when going home late. • Campus Cruisers are available in the evenings to drive you back home. • Personal Belongings: o Do not leave laptops and other valuables unattended. Keep personal items with you at all times (e.g. laptop, cell phone, chargers, wallets, purses, backpacks, notebooks, etc.). o The lobby, public assembly, and outdoor and deck spaces associated with Iovine and Young Hall are public spaces and are open to general USC and non-USC traffic. The Academy also receives visitors and guests on an ongoing basis, so please be extra careful with your belongings. o Be aware at all times. The Academy is not liable for lost or stolen items. • Contact DPS immediately at the number below if you need medical attention, or if you see anything or anyone suspicious. Food and Personal Property Food and Beverages Individual student food is not allowed in Academy classrooms, studios, labs, or student conference rooms (Ideation Rooms, Huddle Rooms). Exceptions may be made for classes that meet between 12 pm and 2 pm or later, and will be accommodated by a faculty request to Academy Facilities. Water, coffee and tea is allowed in all Academy spaces, excluding the IYH Mixed Reality and Podcast Studios. Students may have food in the Garage Kitchen area (but not at the digital work stations), IYH 1st Floor Cohort Studios, IYH Lobby, and IYH “Hub” Outdoor Deck. Skateboards, Bikes, Scooters, etc. All skateboards, bikes, motorized or personal transportation devices (PTDs) must be in designated racks on the north and east sides of IYH, and outside the SKS Garage. PTDs are not allowed inside Academy facilities at any time. Any personal transportation devices found inside Academy facilities are subject to immediate removal. Lost and Found The Lost and Found is located in IYH Creator Studio. Found items should be taken to the Creator Studio and deposited with a staff member in the Equipment Cage at the northeast corner of the main shop. Maintaining a Clean Environment A clean workspace shows respect to those with whom it is shared. Please be aware of the spaces you use: keep them tidy, throw your trash away immediately, and be mindful of others. • Take pride in your space. Respect it and keep it looking presentable. • Pick up after yourself. Keep your belongings with you and throw your trash away. Common Areas and Classrooms • Keep desks clean and neatly aligned after use. • Return supplies and equipment to their proper locations after use. • Return chairs/tables to their proper locations/setup after use. • Please respect others by using headphones for music or other audio. • Turn off Media Pods when not in use and push cables back into the receptacle. • Whiteboard content should be photographed and erased after use. Whiteboards are regularly cleaned by staff, and without notice. • Do not store group project materials in common area spaces. Store materials in assigned locker/cabinet spaces only. • Large projects in progress requiring storage outside of the lockers are acceptable, but students must receive written permission from the Academy Facilities Manager for temporary storage. Iovine and Young Academy Facilities Handbook 5
o Requests can be submitted to iya.helpdesk@usc.edu. o Projects left for approved storage in common areas must be labeled with your name and contact info. All mess and trash resulting from projects should be cleaned up and thrown out immediately. o Please store your projects as prescribed by facilities staff and in a compact way when not being worked on so as to avoid inhibiting others from using the space. • Projects and materials not adhering to the guidelines above may be subject to removal. • The posting of flyers or newsletters on building walls, doors or windows is prohibited per USC policy. Sustainability Consider the environment before producing anything. Please look for ways to practice sustainable principles in your daily actions (e.g., design for maximum use of materials panels, use scraps whenever possible, measure twice/cut once, and as always, turn off lights and A/V when no longer using a room). Use re-usable beverage and food containers whenever possible, and take advantage of building water fountains and bottle filling stations. Iovine and Young Academy Facilities Handbook 6

Iovine and Young Academy Facilities Handbook 10
• Please note that food is not allowed in these rooms at any time. Water, coffee and tea is allowed. The “Hub” Outdoor Deck The “Hub” Outdoor Deck is available for use during IYH public access hours. This excludes game days or other special events which may provide additional access. Students are responsible to clean up all trash and to replace any furniture moved from its original location. Creator Studio (Note that violation of any of the following policies may result in the loss of Creator Studio privileges.) Gaining Access to IYH Creator Studio Machines and Equipment Academy majors and minors, or non-majors/minors enrolled in Academy classes that require use of the machinery will have access to the Creator Studio once the Academy-required safety and machine use training is completed. Non-majors who do not have access through Academy courses may purchase a semester-based subscription to use the Creator Studio at https://www.uscbookstore.com/usciyasoftware. General Requirements • No one is to work in the Creator Studio alone. Academy staff or authorized work study students must be present when students are working. • Students must conduct themselves in a safe manner at all times. • No roughhousing or unsafe play. • Request help to lift heavy objects. • Never operate any machinery when tired. • Never bring anyone into the shop that is not authorized and has not completed the Academy training. • Care must be taken to see that all lumber is free from nails, sand, paint, or loose knots before machining. • Food is not permitted. Water, coffee and tea in spill-proof containers are allowed. • Cell phones and other personal electronic devices must not be used when working at any machine. • Aisles, exits, and access to emergency equipment must be kept clear at all times. • All materials and supplies must be provided by the user or purchased from the Academy. • Electrical tools and equipment must be unplugged immediately after use. • ONLY use tools for their intended purpose. • Return/check-in tools and equipment to the Equipment Cage or proper bin/drawer/wall/cabinet after use. Iovine and Young Academy Facilities Handbook 11
• Keep group project materials neatly contained in appropriate storage spaces (e.g. cardboard, plastic, etc.). • Do not remove any tools from the shop. Personal Safety and Protective Equipment • Everyone has an equal responsibility for safety. Anyone who finds a dangerous condition in the shop must notify the Makerspace Manager immediately. All injuries must be reported to the Makerspace Manager at once no matter how minor the injury may be. Get first aid immediately for any injury. • All individuals in the shop areas must wear eye protection. • Gloves shall not be worn while operating machinery with rotating or reciprocating parts. This is because such machines and parts can catch on the glove and pull the user's hand towards dangerous moving parts. Gloves may be worn while loading and unloading parts and tooling. • Wearing headphones or other devices that interferes with hearing is not allowed. • Open-toed shoes are not permitted in the shop. • No loose-fitting clothing or loose hair may be worn while operating machines. • Remove all jewelry (e.g. rings, necklaces, bracelets, and watches), neckties, or other apparel that may become caught in machinery. • Before turning on any machine note the location of all power supply switches in case you need to shut down the machine quickly. Do not try to stop the machine with your hands or body. • All equipment safety guards must be kept in their proper position while machines are being operated. • Do not leave equipment unattended while it is running. • The floor around any machine must be clear of all liquids, sawdust, and wood scraps before beginning work. • Use proper dust collection when using the equipment. • Cutting mats must be used whenever cutting. Keep cutting mats clean and flat. • Keep fingers away from moving machine parts. Never reach over dangerous moving parts or lean over the work so that hair or clothing can become entangled in rotating parts. • Use brushes, vacuum equipment, or special tools to remove chips and shavings from near a cutting tool. Never use hands or rags that can be caught by moving parts. • Stop the machine when it is necessary to clean or adjust the equipment. Push sticks shall be used where appropriate (i.e. stripping, cutting small parts, etc.) Compressed Air • Use of compressed air for cleaning purposes, referred to as "blow-down or blow-off", is discouraged where alternative means are feasible. Specifically cleaning with compressed air can disperse dust into the air where it can be inhaled and can propel projectiles that have the potential to penetrate the skin or eyes. For these reasons, cleaning with compressed air should only be conducted when other methods, such as vacuuming and brushing, are impractical or ineffective. Additionally, use of compressed air for cleaning is expressly prohibited for specific Iovine and Young Academy Facilities Handbook 12
toxic substances. If in doubt as to the appropriateness or necessity for cleaning with compressed air, check with your shop supervisor or USC Environmental Health and Safety at https://ehs.usc.edu/. • Compressed air used for cleaning purposes shall be less than 30 psi (pounds per square inch) at the nozzle and effective chip guarding and personal protective equipment are required. • Compressed air shall not be used for cleaning clothing while on a person, nor for cleaning a person. Hand Tools • Use the approved tool for the job (e.g. do not use a screwdriver as a chisel) • Use only tools in good condition and free from broken or splintered parts. • When working with hand tools, always secure the work in a mechanical vise or with clamps. Never use your hands in place of such equipment. Painting, Spraying, Sculpting, Plastering, etc. • Painting may be done in the spray-booth in the IYH finishing room. Please line the interior horizontal AND vertical surfaces with butcher paper before use. • Small-scale brush painting may be done in the Creator Studio facility provided that a water- based acrylic, water-based latex paint, or water-based stain is used, and the work surface is thoroughly covered and protected with waterproof paper. • All brushes should be washed thoroughly in the utility sink located in the workshop area. Brushes may be cleaned, however, do not dump excess paint down the sink. • Do not put any wax, clay, plaster, concrete, toxic materials, etc., down any sink at the University (or anywhere else!) • Use of oil-based paints, products or toxic materials such as stains, lacquers, paint thinner, acetone-based products, resins, etc., is prohibited in the IYH Creator Studio. • Work areas are shared spaces. Please be considerate of other people using the space. Do not engage in practices that are unsafe for you or your fellow students. Remove your work immediately after completion and clean up after yourself. • Please consult with a lab tech before disposing of toxic materials. The University has a HAZ-MAT department that ensures toxic materials are disposed of properly. • If you have any doubt or question as to whether or not a certain construction process or material is permissible in IYH, please ask the lab tech overseeing the area for advice on how to proceed. The lab techs are knowledgeable and can help guide you in terms of work process and safety. Iovine and Young Academy Facilities Handbook 13
Creator Studio Machinery and Equipment: What’s Available and How to Use It A full list of machines and accompanying instructions, safety precautions, and important notes are provided in Appendix A of this document. This document is not intended to replace or substitute for Academy-required training, or for manufacturer supplied safety manuals. No student may access the Creator Space equipment or machinery without first completing the required training, and gaining familiarity with the safety requirements. The following machines may not currently be accessed by students alone, and must be operated by Academy staff, or with Academy staff in attendance. Note that use of the following machines requires files to be correctly submitted one day in advance: CNC MILL, WATERJET, PROJET 660, F170, AND FORM2 Creator Studio Equipment Loan Guidelines The USC Iovine and Young Academy makes equipment available for student and faculty use through the IYH Creator Studio Equipment Cage. If you have any questions, concerns, or need help, please visit the IYH Creator Studio or email iya.helpdesk@usc.edu. o Only Academy faculty, staff, currently enrolled students, and students who have purchased a Creator Studio subscription may check out equipment for use in the Creator Studio. o All borrowers must complete a Loan Agreement Form (see Appendix B) before they can check out any equipment. Students must complete a Loan Agreement Form each semester. Allow one full business day for processing. o Your USC ID Card is required to check out equipment. Your USC ID must also be present when returning equipment. Equipment must be returned to the same location from which it was borrowed. Equipment cannot be transferred between borrowers. o All physical making equipment must remain in the Creator Studio, unless authorized by the Maker Space Manager. o AV equipment loaned overnight is due by 1:00 pm on the 3rd day after it is checked out (e.g. gear checked out Monday is due Thursday at 1:00 pm). Unless special arrangements have been made, any equipment returned after 1:00 pm is considered late. There is no grace period. Students who habitually return late equipment and inconvenience their fellow students may not be allowed further access to equipment. Late fees will be assessed for equipment not returned on time. o Late fees are as follows: $20 per day for A/V equipment and $10 per day for all other items. o All equipment is loaned complete and in working order. Please check the equipment before accepting the loan. If you discover any missing parts or broken equipment, notify Academy staff immediately. o Reservations have priority over renewals. Loaned equipment may be renewed once over the phone if reservations allow for it. The subsequent renewals must be completed in person. o You are responsible for replacing or repairing any equipment damaged, lost or stolen if determined by the Equipment Cage personnel to have occurred while on loan to you. Do not attempt to operate any unfamiliar or malfunctioning equipment. You accept full responsibility for all equipment loaned to you, even during class time. Access to all equipment will be denied until repair costs are paid. Repeated damaged returns can result in loss of access to all equipment and labs. Iovine and Young Academy Facilities Handbook 14
o Maintain and return all kits and other equipment in as good or better condition than when you received it. The best way to make sure your loaned equipment remains in proper condition while in your possession is to keep it organized. That means wrapping up all cables/cords, removing batteries and tripod plates from camera bodies, and returning equipment to their proper positions in the camera case. o Do not mix up the contents of the kits. All equipment is identified with a barcode. This is important because the barcode not only identifies the equipment (e.g. Canon T6i), it also identifies the equipment as belonging to a kit number (e.g. Canon T6i Kit #2). Always make sure the pieces in your kits stay together, are organized, and do not get mixed up. If a piece of equipment or kit is returned in a messy state, it will be rejected until it is organized. o Equipment is loaned primarily for the purpose of completing Academy student, faculty and staff projects and for class use. Equipment is explicitly NOT loaned for commercial purposes or for the use by persons assisting or hired by the borrower. Borrowing equipment for another’s use can result in loss of access to equipment. o Access to some equipment may be limited to what you have been approved for and/or trained on by faculty or staff. Changes to access must be in writing directly from a faculty member, advisor or staff member capable of providing the required training. o Scheduled classes always have priority use of all equipment regardless of reservations. Reservations are given only as a courtesy and cannot be guaranteed. TABLE SAW MACHINE USE: A table saw can be a dangerous piece of equipment if it is not handled and maintained properly. The table saw gets its name from the circular saw blade that is positioned in the middle of a table. The work piece is brought into contact with the rotating blade. A properly maintained table saw is equipped with a guard over the blade at all times, a push stick, and a fence. A fence is a barrier that assists in guiding the material through the blade. The blade underneath the table should be guarded so the operator cannot accidentally contact the blade. The push stick is a piece of wood that is used in place of the operator's hands. It allows an operator to push the work piece into the blade without the blade getting close to his hands. It should be used when trying to cut a piece of wood 6" wide or less. The push stick should be placed on the material between the blade and the fence, closer to the blade than the fence. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: The most frequent types of accidents that occur from the use of the table saw are cuts or abrasions and kickbacks. These can be minimized by using the proper guarding and safe work practices. Power saw operators often are injured when their hands slip off the stock while pushing it into the saw, or when holding their hands too close to the blade during the cutting operations. This type of injury can be avoided by using a push stick. A kickback occurs during a cutting operation when a part or the entire work piece is violently thrown back to the operator. Kickbacks can be stopped by ensuring that the material being cut remains firmly against the fence while being pushed through the blade, keeping the saw blade sharp, and keeping the saw blade guard, splitter, and anti- kickback device in place. Eye protection must always be worn when working with the table saw. IMPORTANT NOTES: • Never remove the guard from over the blade. The blade should be just high enough to cut the piece -- no more than 1/8 inch above the stock. The blade should never be exposed. • Ask the Shop Director if any special cuts need to be performed. • The work piece should be placed firmly next to the fence. • Your hand should never be in line with the blade or near the blade while the saw is running. (continued...) • The operator must never allow his hands to come closer than 4 inches to the saw blade. Iovine and Young Academy Facilities Handbook 21
• Always check the set-up carefully on the table saw before turning on the power. Wait until the blade stops completely before adjusting fence and measuring the distance from the blade. • When ripping stock, the fence should never be closer than 1/2 inch to the blade. • Always use a push stick to guide a piece through the saw when the fence is closer than 6 inches to the blade. • Nothing should be on the saw table while the saw is in operation. • The blade should always be turned off and lowered below the table when you are done. • Never adjust the saw while it is running. • AVOID KICKBACKS: Never leave stock between the blade and the fence. Be sure to push material all the way past the blade after it is cut. • Wait for saw blade to come to a complete stop before walking away. • Wear eye protection. • Keep loose clothing and hair away from blade. • Clean the machine surface and the floor when finished. OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE: • Verify that the blade is sharp and in good shape. • Raise blade to a height no more than 1/8" above top of stock. • Ask for assistance for complex and/or advanced cuts. Iovine and Young Academy Facilities Handbook 22
BAND SAW MACHINE USE: A band saw has a long, thin blade that travels in a constant path around wheels, and pulleys. The only portion of the blade exposed is the area from the table to the top of the work piece. The wheels, pulleys, belts, and all non- working parts of the blade are encased within the machine. The upper guide of a band saw should be set at a height just above the work piece. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: The most frequent type of accident associated with the band saw is cuts or abrasions. Carelessness and recklessness are the major reasons behind band saw accidents. The operator should never hold his hand directly in front of the band saw blade when cutting small work pieces because he may accidentally push his hand into the blade. If the guards are in place and the upper guide is in the proper position, the operator's hands should remain clear of all moving parts of the saw. Band saw blades should periodically be examined for cracks and broken teeth. The operator should contact the Shop Manager if there are any questions concerning the blade. If the band saw blade breaks or comes off, you should step away immediately, shut off power, and call the Shop Manager. IMPORTANT NOTES: • Keep your hands out of the path of the blade. Never allow your fingers to come closer than 2 inches to the blade. • GO SLOW! Do not force material through the blade. • Make short cuts before long ones to avoid unnecessary backing out. • The guide should be no more than a 1/4 inch above the stock. • When it is necessary to back out stock from a long cut you should stop the machine, wait for the blade to come to a complete stop and then back out the work piece. • Remove jammed pieces of stock only when machine is stopped. • Wear eye protection. • Keep loose clothing and hair away from blade. • Clean the machine and the floor when finished. Iovine and Young Academy Facilities Handbook 23
JIGSAW MACHINE USE: A jig saw is a hand-held cutting tool with a reciprocating blade. Safe operating procedure requires the blade to be properly attached and secure. The threshold rest (slotted foot) should be positioned directly on the work piece. The guards must cover all moving parts and induce the operator to keep his hands a safe distance from the blade. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: For any saw, cuts and abrasions should be the major concern of the operator. The operator’s hand should remain the greatest distance away from the blade as is possible. The material should be secured to the worktable before operating the tool. Because of the size of the jig saw it may seem innocuous, but it must be remembered that whenever you are working with a piece of equipment that can cut through wood and metal it can very easily cut through a hand. IMPORTANT NOTES: • Turn cuts should be made slowly. • Do not use sharp or small radius turns if you are working with a wide blade. • Clearance cuts should be planned to eliminate the need to back out of curves. • There should be enough clearance around the saw to allow proper maneuvering of the work piece. • Never allow your fingers to come closer than 2 inches from the blade. • Check with the Shop Director to determine the maximum work piece thickness that can be safely cut on each jigsaw. • Wear eye protection. • Keep loose clothing and hair away from blade. • Clean the machine and the floor when finished. Iovine and Young Academy Facilities Handbook 24
NAIL/AIR GUN EQUIPMENT USE: Nail guns and air guns are powered by compressed air. The main danger associated with pneumatic fastening tools is injury from one of the tool's attachments or fasteners. Make sure to keep your fingers away from where you are fastening. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: Ensure that pneumatic tools are equipped with a device that prevents fasteners from ejecting unless the muzzle is pressed against a firm surface. Never point the tool at items you do not wish to fasten. Keep your fingers off the trigger until you are ready to begin work. POWER TOOLS EQUIPMENT USE: Power tools can be extremely dangerous if used incorrectly. Power tools can cut, grind, finish, drill, and much more. Make sure to use the correct tool for the job at hand. Use the correct tool for the job and make sure to select the correct bit, blade, cutter, or grinder wheel for the material at hand. Keep all guards in place and make sure to operate at the correct speed for the job at hand. Keep a firm grip on portable power tools and make sure to secure work pieces with a clamp or a vise. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: When working with power tools, you must wear personal protective equipment and avoid wearing loose clothing or jewelry that could catch in moving machinery. Iovine and Young Academy Facilities Handbook 25
CHOP SAW MACHINE USE: The compound miter saw (chop saw) is a circular saw in which the saw is pulled down into the work piece, cutting in a chopping motion. This saw has a guard on either side of the blade. There is also a guard covering the front part of the blade. The saw should be returned to its neutral position after cut is made. This type of saw has a fence type guard that restricts the movement of the work piece. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: The most common accidents that occur with a chop arm saw are cuts or abrasions and kickbacks. If all the guards are in place and the work piece is restrained by the fence, no accidents should occur. No operator should ever have cause to bring his hand in close to the blade of this saw. Kickback is a dangerous reaction of the saw to notches or unevenness in the work piece. IMPORTANT NOTES: • Wear eye protection. • Do not place hands closer than 2 inches from the blade. • Do not attempt to cut short stock on the chop saw. • Cut in a slow steady motion. Do not "chop" at the material. It is not an axe. • Bring saw to a complete stop before walking away. • Clean the machine and the floor when finished. OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE: • The chop saw is for cross cutting. • Adjust saw angle for either 45 degrees or 90 degrees (fixed) or other angles as required. • Hold stock firmly against the table.
