Press Kit 2018 EDITORIAL Ladies and gentlemen, It is a great pleasure to welcome you prior to the opening of the Euronaval exhibition, which France has had the privilege of organising for the last 50 years. This 26th edition of Euronaval will open on 23rd October and will highlight the issues at stake for the French naval industry and furthermore for the naval industry on a global scale. Firstly, the strong dynamics of the market. Euronaval is the world showcase for the naval defence industry, which represents around 45 billion euros in sales worldwide. The diversity of new threats Hervé GUILLOU, and the need to secure free access to open seas as well as coastal waters, and the rise of new President of the GICAN navies are driving sales in defence and security equipment. Likewise, the growth of the marine CEO of Naval Group sector in the global economy implies a closer surveillance of shipping routes and exclusive economic zones. For 15 years now, our market has not only seen the emergence of new ground-breaking technologies, but also of new, more aggressive competition. This dual trend requires an increased effort in terms of research and development, and innovation in general. This year, Euronaval introduces SEAnnovation, a space dedicated to startups developing solutions for the future and opening new areas for technological superiority. Finally, to support the development of our industries, we need to develop our work force at the cutting edge of technology. Our industry must make itself more attractive to young people, raise awareness of our 400 different specialities and highlight the numerous opportunities for high-tech jobs. This is the purpose of the “Navire des Métiers” (Jobs Vessel), a major project launched by the GICAN Board of Directors in partnership with our regions and ministries. It aims at presenting our professions to students, from vocational training qualifications to higher education and hopefully at convincing them to join us. I would like to thank the French Navy and DGA (French Defence Procurement Directorate) for their presence alongside industrialists, while the ambitious French Defence programming law, adopted by our parliament last Spring, is about to be implemented, determining the future of our navy’s capabilities and national programs. I also thank them for their constant support in developing strategic operations and G to G relationship with an ever-growing number of partnering countries. As you know, the GICAN, our French industry association, representing 180 companies, 9.5 billion euros turnover and 42,000 direct jobs, organises this edition of Euronaval every two years with Sogena. Close to 50% of French naval industry is dedicated to export, and Euronaval is therefore a fundamental meeting place for our industry as well as for all industrialists from the 33 countries that exhibit here. Hence, Euronaval is also an important meeting place for developing exchanges between companies from different countries, which often lead to closer cooperation in the future. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Euronaval, a trade show that grows and attracts more exhibitors and visitors with every edition. I am sure that 2018 Euronaval will be a great success once again, for the companies exhibiting at our show as for the official delegations attending in order to prepare the future of their navies. I look forward to seeing you on 23rd October in Paris-le Bourget! 3
