SOUTH AFRICAN SCHOOL MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE HONOUR GOD HONOUR OTHERS HONOUR SELF Term 1: 27 March 2015 Ex-Saints Prep pupil plays in the Cricket World Cup: Grant Elliott While the world witnessed the cricket skills, drama and excitement of two great sporting nations, South African hearts were broken when Grant Elliot applied his trade with skill and calmness. His sporting manner and Saints connection needs to be celebrated. I have always questioned whether pushing a boy out of his age group into a higher level would be detrimental. Case in point, Grant Elliott. During the early 1990's I was 1st XI cricket coach at the Prep coaching boys on a private basis as I do now. Grant was one of those boys who came for extra coaching. A naturally gifted athlete, a very popular boy, humble, very competitive with a wonderful sense of humour. Grant learned to mix with boys older than him, as he had an older brother, Scott. His cricket talent developed from an early age and he was a genuine all rounder, bowling accurate medium fast out swing, a brilliant fielder and a very solid No. 4 in the batting order, in the mould of Jacques Kallis. …….Grant Elliot reflection continued. I coached Grant for about 5 years, and my gut feel / instinct was to select him to play in the 1 XI in Grade 5. Our cricket system was adjusted at Gauteng junior level to play 50-over matches on Saturdays which would allow the boys to develop to the longer version of the game. I was not surprised to hear the commentators discuss Grant’s calmness under extreme pressure and his ability to accelerate where required, and one of his strengths has always been to encour- age and support his fellow team mates. This was so evident in his matches during this World Cup. In my opinion and much to my relief, Grant was prepared for this World Cup all the way back from Grade 5. His work ethic, determination and belief in his ability during his time growing up in SA, trying to make inroads into the evolving provincial franchise set up in South African cricket, and his passion to play the game at the highest level, have always remained strong. His rollercoaster selections in New Zealand have now been rewarded with this one in 2015. Stephen Farrell It came as no surprise to see his name cropping up so regularly in the 1992 school magazine. Grant was the only Std 3 (Grade 5) to be selected for the Boys’ Prep 1st X1 Cricket team. His coach at the time, Steve Farrell recalls that he always maintained that Grant was “born for the 50 - over game”. In 1992 he represented the school at first team level in Cricket (Capt.), Football, Cross Country, Athletics and Tennis. He was an outstanding academic and disliked competitive swimming intensely. He was a naughty boy in the fun sense of the word, his permanent smile be- traying his mischievous nature”. Mark de Buys Boys’ Prep closes at 12:00 on Thursday 2 April for the Easter Weekend. However, boys who cannot be fetched at that time, will be supervised by staff at various Easter Festival events, and brought back to school (Warren Quad) after the College First Rugby match at approx. 2:45pm where parents can collect their sons. A tennis tournament was held at St Stithians last Saturday against Howick Preparatory School. Our boys and girls played mixed doubles and then singles against a co-ed team from Howick. Great ten- nis was played and the teamwork between the girls and boys was superb. Congratulations to Moeteledi Monnakgotla, Cameron White, Theo Mokake, Matthew Pilling, Luke Caveney and Dan- iel Crowie - we won 223 to 101!

At the start of the first match of the day the boys found themselves two tries down against a spirit- ed Cornwall side. The second half saw some very decent rugby played by our side and after fighting bravely back we eventually lost 10 - 5. A mere ten minutes later we played our second game against the hosts, in an entertaining match which we lost 20 - 10 to a very good Pridwin side. Our third game was against St Benedict’s and again it was a close match which we won 12-10. This gave us all the confidence we were looking for as we went into the fourth match against Bryanston. In a one sided match Saints dominated from start to finish being the comfortable winner. With our last three matches running close together we were worried our the boys might run out of steam. They had other ideas and scored 15 tries in the last three matches to finish the festival strong! Njabulo Dlamini was voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP) on the day. Our sincere thanks to the Saints boys who came out to support us, dressed neatly and showing true Saints spirit. They behaved exceptionally well, singing and cheering their school mates on. Look out for news on our 1st Team’s Rugby Night Festival with Fourie Du Preez in next week’s newsletter.
Well done to Connor Doig who participated in the Mpumalanga Mini Tennis Tournament. Connor had his best results ever at a tournament and finished 3rd overall in the boys U10 singles. Connor and his partner (Josh Prinsloo from St Peter’s) were the beaten finalists in the boys U10 doubles. Connor played exceptionally well in the singles quarterfinals and came from 2 games down to beat his opponent who was a year older than him! He really showed great determination!! We are very proud of you. Peter Watt swam the Ebenezer Open Water Mile in Magoebaskloof. This is a great achievement for a grade 3 boy. Well done Peter. Congratulations to Njabulo Dlamini and James Macdonald who were selected as Captain & Vice Captain respectively for our Athletics teams. Well done boys! The Grade 5 boys have had a fantastic time using their boards to write their theory. Pictured be- low they are seen identifying and naming the notes of the treble clef. The Grade 3s have been learning the basics of how to play the recorder. They have shown true skill and look very smart when they play. The Grade 4s have had fun naming the "families" of the orchestra and listening to them played. They are pictured here colouring the seating plan of the orchestra. Daniel Sguazzin, Jaime Lewis & Enzo Barbaglia are pictured here participating in the Marimba Band Fundraising Golf Day James and Lwazi were invited by our project Phela re Phele Musical Arts Academy to perform at our Hu- man Rights day concert in Soweto. They presented two songs, and also played along with other children accompanied by the band. Phela re Phele Musical Arts Academy was delighted to have Lwazi and James perform with other children in Soweto. They were stars!
