OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES WELCOME This IETA-led European summit, taking place on April 16th to 17th 2019 in Lisbon at the Four Seasons Hotel, with a Pre-Event day on April 15th, will bring together leading climate and energy practitioners to discuss and analyse key developments in carbon markets and emissions trading, green finance, industry decarbonisation and energy transition, and beyond. 2019 is a key year for climate action as we get closer to the “post-2020” world, which many of us have devolved and dedicated a lot of effort to help shape. While we approach the 2020 milestone, this event will be an opportunity to take stock of the main developments to date as well as discuss the next steps for climate action primarily at the European level, and internationally. 2019 also marks IETA's 20th anniversary! So we view this Lisbon Summit as a key opportunity to celebrate IETA’s birthday together with our members, partners and friends and, in a pure Talanoa spirit, reflect on where we - the carbon market community - are, where we need to go and how we’ll get there, inspiring our actions going forward and in hands on manner How to Meet Emissions Manage the Implementation Reduction Goals Challenges Define Your Pathway to Decarbonisation Optimize Your Corporate Create Economic Strategies Opportunities KEY THEMATIC AREAS European Climate Action: Europe is a world leader in climate action and is evaluating options to reach net zero emissions by 2050. This will require action at an unprecedented scale which will impact all parts of the economy. But the requirement to take action has never been clearer, stronger or louder. At the heart of Europe’s climate ambition is the world’s largest emissions trading system. 2018 saw unprecedented market activity with European carbon units finishing the year as the best performing major global commodity. 2019 and beyond heralds new territory for the market with new rules and regulations, uncertainties around Brexit, links to new markets and sectors, and funds to drive innovation and new technology. ECS will focus on what these developments mean for the future of climate action in Europe, among many other topics. International Markets: The adoption of the Paris Rulebook at COP24 in Katowice was a clear milestone for international climate action. But much work remains to implement and bring to life the Paris Agreement. More importantly, the guidance for market cooperation (Article 6) under the Agreement, left out from the Rulebook at COP24, will be a key piece of work in 2019 due for completion by COP25 in Santiago. At the same time, several countries are moving forward to implement bilateral and multilateral forms of collaboration to reduce emissions through market-based measures, preparation for CORSIA is in full swing as we approach the start date and voluntary action is on the rise. ECS will look at the state of play in international carbon markets, reflecting on the challenges lying ahead and discussing the way forward. 3

If you’re dreaming about your next trip within Europe, come and discover Lisbon, a historical city full of stories to tell, where the sun shines 290 days a year and the temperature rarely drops below 15C. Discover Lisbon, a city full of authenticity where old customs and ancient history intermix with cultural entertainment and hi-tech innovation. It is one of the major economic centres on the continent, with a growing financial sector and one of the largest container ports on Europe's Atlantic coast. Lisbon is ageless, but it loves company, as you’ll find out if you meet someone and ask them to explain, with lots of gestures and repetition, where the best place is to listen to Fado.
