Said Delvin Lee, Producer, The Esplanade Co Ltd, “Man needs food and water for physical sustenance, but of equal importance is sustenance for the soul and the spirit through arts and culture. The arts can inspire and empower us all, and also bring positivity and cheer to start the new year on a high. This year’s Huayi features a diverse and very exciting programme line-up headlined by three new creations by Singapore artists—the festival’s first-ever commissioned work staged at our 2,000-seat Theatre; a site-specific theatrical experience staged at Esplanade’s basement carpark which has never been used as a performance space, and an inter-disciplinary work by two stalwarts of the Singapore arts scene collaborating together for the first time. “Adding to the mix is a co-commission that features a Singapore actor working with his regional counterparts; overseas artists introducing their youthful dynamism to audiences here, as well as returning artists who will be presenting their refreshing takes on the arts! All of us at the Durian are looking forward to whipping up an unconventional ‘dining’ experience and celebrating the Lunar New Year with you and your family and friends at Huayi, where the courses not only provide sustenance, but are also lip-smackingly delicious!” Chef’s New Creations Over the past 15 years, Esplanade, fondly dubbed the Durian, has commissioned and presented numerous fruits of labour by Singapore and Asian artists, particularly in contemporary dance and theatre, and Huayi has always been a platform for Singapore theatre companies to produce and create interesting new works. With its new 550-seat waterfront theatre to be built by 2021, Esplanade has also been stepping up on its efforts to support the development and creation of more made-in-Singapore works, as well as to seed collaborations between Singapore and regional artists. Why We Chat? Edward Lam Dance Theatre (Hong Kong/Taiwan) A theatrical presentation on modern relationships and ghost stories, inspired by the classical Chinese literary collection Liaozhai Zhiyi (Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio). A wise man once said, “True love is like ghosts—you hear of them a lot, but few are those who actually come across one”. A writer, Mr Pu, wanted to be a bestselling author but could never achieve his aspiration. As things did not turn out as he planned, he couldn’t help but move along with the flow and started earning a living by developing an app named “Zhailiao”, in which he invented various types of beautiful women that lonely single souls could chat with. Page 8 of 41
However, he gradually became obsessed with one of his creations, Ms Hu (“Ms Fox”), who seemed to know him better than he himself did. Over time, with Ms Hu’s omnipresence, Mr Pu began to suspect whether she really existed. The roles changed along with their identities and the story gradually unraveled Ms Hu’s mystery. Whatever happened between this man and this woman, be it love or hate, it all happened in a busy hotel named “Liaozhai”. Ten years ago, award-winning director and actress Sylvia Chang first met popular actor David Wang in the play Design for Living. In Why We Chat?, they meet again. But this time, what are they? Restless humans, grieving ghosts or shape-shifting fox sprits? Directed by award-winning director Edward Lam and written by the highly sought-after playwright-actress Wong Wing Sze, Why We Chat? is a lyrical and romantic discourse that lets us gaze deep into ourselves, and into each other, to see how human we truly are. “These days, we have so many ways of communicating with each other, but have people become afraid of engaging in real conversations? We float through the day, and come alive only at night. We take what we want from each other, but we resist giving ourselves to others. We constantly battle our emotional needs with the physical realities of everyday life. Are we becoming less human and more like ghosts? What if the fox spirit truly exists, a being who can see our innermost wants and desires and is able to hold all these up to the light?” - Edward Lam (Approximately 3hrs, including 20min intermission) Performed in Mandarin with English surtitles. Advisory: This performance contains some coarse language and mature content. Recommended for audiences aged 16 years and above. Blood & Rose Ensemble Shakespeare’s Wild Sisters Group (Taiwan/Singapore) (An Esplanade Co-commission) Blood & Rose Ensemble takes on Shakespeare’s “Wars of the Roses” history plays, putting a fresh, satirical and highly entertaining spin on the question of how history gets made. Between the beauty and violence of roses and bloodshed, how is history written and re-written? How are these histories told, and who gets to tell them? In this brilliantly-inventive staging, prodigious Taiwanese director Wang Chia-Ming plays the invisible DJ, spinning in the arena of history, as he boldly remixes cuts, characters, and conflicts of Shakespeare’s Henry VI and Richard III, whilst jockeying the talented ensemble of actors in a madcap two-hour journey. The actors toggle multiple roles—playing various characters and performing their own music live—and cross-fade seamlessly between improvisation and performance, as they hurtle us through the voices and interwoven (hi)stories of Henry VI and Richard III, only to find that the enduring truth of our time is the illusiveness of truth itself. A co-commission by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay and The National Theater & Concert Hall, Blood & Rose Ensemble features Singapore theatre actor Oliver Chong, alongside nine illustrious Taiwanese theatre actors, in a performance that is as disquieting a requiem to the blood and beauty of the historic Wars, as it is a striking indictment of truth in our post-truth times. (Approximately 2hrs, no intermission) Performed in Mandarin and some Chinese dialects, with English and Chinese surtitles. There will be a post-performance talk for the performances on 24 Feb, 8pm and 25 Feb, 3pm. 23–25 Feb 2018, Fri–Sun Fri–Sun, 8pm Sat & Sun, 3pm Esplanade Theatre Studio Ticket Price: $38^ Concessions for students, NSFs and senior citizens: $20 ^ Esplanade&Me Specials available Early Bird Special: 16–30 Nov 2017 Black Card: 20% savings | White Card: 15% savings Page 18 of 41

T.H.E Dance Company x Nine Years Theatre (Singapore) (An Esplanade Commission) “The tremendous world I have inside my head. But how [to] free myself and free it without being torn to pieces. And a thousand times [I’d] rather be torn to pieces than rather it in me or bury it…” – Franz Kafka, Diaries of Franz Kafka A cross-disciplinary encounter between dance and theatre, inspired by the surreal world of literary icon Franz Kafka. Singapore’s T.H.E Dance Company and Nine Years Theatre come together for the very first time, led by artistic directors Kuik Swee Boon (T.H.E) and Nelson Chia (Nine Years Theatre), in a playful and moving rumination on human nature and its many faces. Join them on a dreamlike journey, as two of Singapore’s leading performing arts companies gallantly experience their own metamorphoses. Regarded as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century, Franz Kafka’s works, including The Metamorphosis, The Trial and The Castle, have had such an impact that they have also given rise to the term “Kafkaesque”, in reference to his signature writing style and poignant depictions of human alienation and absurd bureaucracy.
