COMPULSORY FULL YEAR SUBJECTS English The Year 9 English programme is designed to foster a love of reading and build confidence in written, oral and visual skills. The course includes a variety of literature, and the study of writing, close reading, speaking and visual language. Students are assessed on their ability to understand ideas in texts, and to express ideas with accuracy in writing, speaking and visual presentations. Languages We offer six different community and international languages for study in Year 9 (Chinese, French, Japanese, Latin, Maori and Spanish). Each language course runs the full year and teaches students how to communicate with target language speakers. Each course also emphasises the importance of intercultural understanding in our increasingly globalised world. Students are assessed on their ability to listen, speak, read and write in the chosen languages. In addition to issued textbooks, and workbooks purchased from the EGGS stationery shop, an annual subscription to the online app, Education Perfect, is strongly recommended. This is used for vocabulary learning, homework, competitions and projects and costs $30. Some languages also use ImmerseMe, a virtual reality programme useful for developing speaking skills in particular ($20). Mathematics In year 9 Mathematics, students will learn to solve problems in a range of mathematical contexts, including Number, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement and Statistics. We aim for students to achieve both procedural fluency and relational understanding of mathematical concepts, to become flexible mathematical thinkers and problem solvers. Most students will be in mixed-ability classes, but we also have some small supportive classes for students who find mathematics challenging and some larger classes for students who would benefit from additional extension opportunities. Students are assessed using topic tests and assignments, and an end-of-year common assessment task on all topics learned during the year. Students will require a Casio Graphics calculator. Health and Physical Education The Health and Physical Education programme at Year 9 focuses on the concept of Wellbeing – physical, mental and emotional, social and spiritual. Through learning in this curriculum, students will gain the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. They will develop motivation to make informed decisions and to act in ways that contribute to their personal well-being, the well-being of other people and that of society as a whole. Frequently Asked Questions If my friend and I choose the same options, would we be in the same class? It is unlikely, as there are 400 students in Year 9 with different option choices and learning needs to accommodate in the timetable. Also, the half year options are spread over the year. The order in which you do these is random, so students with the same option choices will not always do them at the same time. However, there will be opportunities to meet your friends at break times and you will make new friends. How will I know what the subjects mean? This booklet provides information about all the subjects in Year 9. Before you complete the online course selection, it is really important that you and your parents read this book and discuss your option choices. Can I take up a new language after Year 9? Not unless you have prior knowledge of the language. That is why it is important to choose carefully and also consider taking two languages if there are two you like. Do I need to have taken the language in Year 8 to be able to choose it for Year 9? No, the language courses are designed to accommodate a diverse range of students. For half year options, how will I know when I will be taking them? You will know which one you will do first when you see your timetable at the beginning of the year. Why do I have to show my first choice and second choice? Usually students will get their first choice. Sometimes there are timetable clashes or limited availability. When a placement is made in a half year literacy programme, only one half year course can be allocated. When will I get a clear outline of the subjects I will take? Your compulsory subjects are explained in the booklet. Your option choices will be confirmed with you at the pre-enrolment meeting. The Dean will contact you if any changes are required. At the beginning of the year, every student is issued with a weekly timetable which shows her subjects and classrooms. This will be explained to you by your Tutor Teacher as part of your orientation. Do I have to do a subject in Year 9 if I want to do it in Year 10? This is a general rule for languages unless you have prior knowledge. Usually students will be able to choose from the full range of Year 10 options. Will I be able to do any combination of Languages if I select a second Language? While we will endeavor to provide students with the Languages of their choice, in some instances particular combinations of subjects are not available due to staffing and subject numbers. In this instance, students will be notified and asked to make another choice. 20 Year 9 Options 2020
