1. Forward
This handbook has been developed as a guide for parents/guardians/carers and students
about matters relating to the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program at Sarina State High
School. Each family should thoroughly understand the content and follow all procedures.

2. Introduction
Sarina State High School’s commitment to digital learning has not changed from that of
previous years. Our school values the importance of being digitally connected with our
community and that we offer our students the best possible learning experiences with digital
devices.

With the concept of the BYOD program at Sarina State High School in 2021, we plan to
focus on student academic improvement, engagement and attitude to learning as well
as afford our students opportunities to further develop 21st century learning skills.

After extensive research and consultation, the school staff see great benefits of
increased individual access to a laptop in the senior grades, as having the potential to
lead to greater student engagement, creativity and learning outcomes. In 2021, the
Bring Your Own (BYO) laptop program is offered to all students in Year 10, 11 and 12.

3. Cost to Families
There will be a cost of $50 for your Bring Your Own Device.

The following table outlines what is included for this cost:

 Papercut and printing services including printing credit per term.

 School technician support (connecting to the Wi-Fi service, installation of school
        licensed software, troubleshooting support).

 Software access and maintenance of licensing for BYO devices:
           · Clickview online (24/7 access to resource library of educational videos
            through any approved BYO device)
           · Microsoft Office Suite 2016 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher)
           · Microsoft Office 365 (24/7 access to school email from any approved BYO
            Device).
4. Software
Installation and maintenance of personal software are the responsibility of the family. Genuine
versions of software need to be installed to ensure updates. Updates should be completed at
home and a full backup of your laptop is encouraged beforehand to avoid possible loss of data.
All devices must have up-to-date anti-virus software installed before connecting to
the schools network.

Students will need to download Microsoft Office and any additional software needed for 2021
will be advised upon enrolment. The schools website contains a list of software with
download links.

       5. Microsoft Office
All state school students from Prep to Year 12 can now download multiple free
copies of the Microsoft Office 2016 Suite to their personal device.

Students who want the free software will need an active Managed Internet Service
(MIS) login, school email account and password — those who don‘t have these
should contact their school’s MIS Administrator or class teacher. The administrator
will help students activate their MIS login.

Currently, MS Office Suite 2016 is available for students’ personal equipment
only — not equipment which is part of a school network.

         6. Charging of Devices
Students will be expected to bring a fully charged laptop to school each day. The
power supply will not be required to be brought to school. Leaving power supplies
at home reduces the weight of the equipment student’s transport to and from
school and reduces the likelihood of damage and/or loss.

           7. School Wi-Fi and Mobile 3/4G
Approved laptop devices that meet the outlined specifications will recognise the
schools Wi-Fi and students will be able to connect. Standard EQ internet security
filters will screen usage and access. Students must agree to follow the ICT
Responsible Use Policy in relation to internet use.

3G and 4G ability should be disabled in all devices as this function when activated
allows students to bypass the EQ internet security filters. Sarina State High School
will take no responsibility for the content accessed by students using 3/4G facility
on their personally owned devices. Any connection which is not through the
Managed Internet Service contravenes school policy and consequences will be
            enforced.
8. School Technical Support
If you run into a problem, we advise students to see the schools Information
Technology (IT) staff who will attempt to diagnose the fault. If this is not able to be
resolved by the schools IT staff, they can recommend a course of action for repair (e.g.
warranty claim, insurance claim etc).

9. Repairs and Maintenance
All maintenance for the IT device, operating system, software and/or apps
purchased by the family are the responsibility of the family. Families should ensure
quick maintenance turnaround for student devices.

10. Printing
Students will be able to connect their approved BYO laptop device via their
web browser to access printers. Students receive $5 printing credit each term.
Additional credit can be purchased by the student from the school office if required.

 11. Unsupported devices
The following devices are not supported by our schools
network and CAN NOT be used:
   • Chromebook
   • MacBook
   • Android
   • LG Smartphones
   • Windows RT
   • Windows Phone
   • Linux/Unix/BSB/*nix

The Sarina State High School ICT Access Policy and the BYOx Responsible Use Policy
is included in this handbook. This document requires reading before signing the
Information and Communication Technology Access Agreement.

                   • access technology as a responsible
                     user
14. Security and Insurance
Lockers are available for hire at a cost of $5 per term. Parents/guardians/carers are encouraged
to seek personal insurance. Check with your preferred insurance company (or your device seller)
about personal insurance at home and, to and from school, for your laptop.

 15. Damage in Transit
All laptops will require a protective bag or case when being transported. This will be an
additional cost but is well worth the outlay as it is the best form of insurance for laptops and
will often protect the device from impacts and accidents, especially when these bags/cases are
 also inside a school bag.

 16. Damage at School
Teachers at school will monitor all devices and rules are in place to prevent foreseeable
problems and damage, however, from time to time, accidents may occur.

If damage is caused by deliberate or careless actions of a student (owner or others), the
costs of repair will be passed onto those involved and necessary behaviour
consequences may apply. The decision around the responsibility for repair costs is at the
discretion of Sarina State High School. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their
laptop into each class and NOT leave them in their school bags.

17. General Care
Students are responsible for the general care of the laptop.

General Precautions

       • It is recommended that food or drink should not be next to the laptop when
           in use.
       • Cords, cables, and removable storage must be inserted into, and removed
           from the laptop carefully.
      • The laptop should never be left in an unsupervised area.
      • Students are responsible for ensuring the battery is charged for each school
           day.

Transporting the laptop
The guidelines below should be followed when transporting the laptop:

       • The laptop should always be within a protective bag/case when carried.
       • Some carrying cases can hold other objects such as clipboards and exercise
books but these must be kept to a minimum to avoid placing too much
pressure and weight on the laptop screen.
Screen Care
The screen can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. They are particularly susceptible
to damage from excessive pressure and can be costly to repair. Please follow the guidelines below:

 • Do not lean on the top of the laptop.
 • Do not place anything near the laptop that could put pressure on the screen.
 • Do not place anything in the carry case that will press against the cover.
 • Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth or anti-static cloth.

Battery Maintenance
To get the most out of the battery life of laptops, follow these simple tips:

     • Reduce the screen brightness to a comfortable level.
     • Disable connectivity such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use.
18. Laptop Specifications

School’s Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students

The school will educate students on cyber bullying, safe internet and email practices and health and safety
regarding the physical use of electronic devices. Students have a responsibility to incorporate these safe practices
in their daily behaviour at school.

The school’s BYOx program supports personally-owned devices in terms of access to printing, internet, file access
and storage, and support to connect devices to the school network.
However, Sarina State High School expects ALL BYOx devices to meet minimum specifications before connecting
to the network according to the BYOx Handbook. The school does not support personally-owned mobile devices
  in regard to:
     • technical support
     • charging of devices at school
     • security, integrity, insurance and maintenance
     • private network accounts
