Activities Against Global Warming The Hitachi Group newly declared “Carbon Neutrality in FY2030 Production” to accelerate the creation of environmental value in corporate activities as a whole aimed at the achievement of “Hitachi Environmental Innovation 2050.” As a member of the Hitachi Group, Hitachi Automotive Systems will promote further energy savings and the use of renewable energy even more actively aimed at “achieving carbon neutrality in FY2030” based on this policy. 1) Active promotion of energy saving ◼ Awarding of Excellent Engineer of Energy We are promoting efforts aimed at the realization of a Conservation low carbon society by introducing and updating to the Yasuhiro Tamegai of Gunma Plant was presented most efficient equipment in the world; reducing waste by the award by the Kanto Bureau of Economy, Trade optimizing operations/management and and Industryof the Ministry of Economy, Trade and recovering/utilizing by-product energy throughout supply Industry as an excellent engineer for his outstanding lines and equipment; and reducing CO2 emissions by contribution to energy conservation in order to using alternative fuels, etc. promote the further diffusion of energy saving. 2) Expanded use of renewable energy We have newly introduced solar power generation equipment at four sites since FY2019 and are promoting expansion of the use of renewable energy. The power generated at these four sites is expected to be about 2,620 MWh/year, with CO2 emissions expected to decrease by about 1,500 t/year. Hitachi Automotive Systems Chonburi, Ltd. Sawa Plant ■ Trend of CO2 Emissions Although we were unable to achieve the target of -10.7% in actual emissions compared with the target of - 5.0% compared with FY2010,the improvement rate for CO2 emissions per unit in FY2019 saw a reduction of about 4,000t-CO2/year against the previous year. We will implement our plans steadily to achieve a low-carbon society by further improving cooperation and promoting the expansion of renewable energy use through clarifying the points for improvement and issues, and sharing advanced examples of energy saving. 5
Reusing Resources We are targeting “Zero Emissions” by recycling resources from waste generated by the company. [Zero Emissions Plants (12 Domestic Plants)] Our current recycling rate is 96.3% and there is only (FY2019) Sawa, Atsugi No.1&2, Gunma No.1&2, Yamanashi, one company with a rate below 80%, an improvement Fukushima, Akita, Kyushu, Saitama on last year. We will accelerate global sharing of Hitachi Automotive Systems Hanshin, Ltd., Hitachi our recycling techniques in order to strengthen Automotive Systems High Cast, Ltd. Iwate resource recycling. *Zero Emissions = Less than 0.5% of waste discarded (Rate of waste shipped to landfills compared with waste/valuables from the plant) 1) Reuse of cutting oil Akita Showa Sangyo Co., Ltd. is using a dehydrator to remove cutting oil from inside the filters used in equipment that produces lifter valves, which are used to open and close engine intake and exhaust valves. Since fiscal 2018, we have been able to reduce 2.4 tons of waste annually by disposing of only filters with reduced oil content. In addition, we have been able to reuse the removed oil and also reduce our cutting oil purchasing costs. [Flow of Reuse of Cutting Oil] 1. Place the used filter in the dehydrator 2. The filter after dehydration Dispose as waste plastic 3. Remove impurities from the oil by 4. After precipitating impurities 5. After precipitating impurities precipitation the first time the second time Reuse as cutting oil 2) Use of rainwater for green curtain sprinkling At Gunma Plant, a green curtain is put in place each year, with water sprinkled twice daily from the water supply for four months from June to September. In FY2019, the company switched the source of the sprinkling water from tap water to rainwater and reduced the amount of tap water used by automating water sprinkling. Sprinkling automation system Roof gutter Green curtain in the No.4 plant office area Rainwater Control Pump *The opening of the valves in the figure above is ■ Waste/Valuables Generation Trend The improvement rate of waste and valuables generated per unit in FY2019 reached 26.7% compared with FY2010, a level that exceeded the 20.0% target. We will continue efforts to improve the amount of generated waste and valuables 6
Chemical Substance Management We are working to replace more harmful chemicals with chemicals that have a lower environmental impact, aimed at reducing our chemical substance atmospheric discharge volumes. The improvement rate of chemical substance atmospheric discharge volumes generated per unit in FY2019 reached 26.7% compared with FY2010, a level that exceeded the 5.5% target. This result is due to the reduction of the amount of organic paint used and the introduction of VOC emission treatment equipment. We will continue to promote reductions in the use of harmful chemical substances and their replacement. Prevention of Environmental Pollution The prevention of environmental pollution is positioned as one of the most important environmental activities of a plant so each plant sets stricter self-control standards than those laid out by policy or law, and regularly measures and monitors water and air quality. In preparation for emergencies, all sites hold planned drills one or more times per year, where records are monitored by internal audit. Moreover, it is confirmed whether this system is functioning in audits by an external certification agency. Environmental Involvement & Community Cooperation Plants are actively involved in conducting local area clean-up activities and environmental education for elementary school children each year. These activities have been established as part of plant environmental activities and have Community volunteer clean-up activities Takizawa River riverbed clean-up activities (Kyushu Plant) (Yamanashi Plant) Preservation of Bioecological Systems Plants in Japan and abroad are actively engaged in activities to preserve ecosystems based on the Hitachi Group Environmental Vision. The Harrodsburg Plant of Hitachi Automotive Systems Americas, Inc. has been promoting the maintenance of the native plants and species habitat since 2018. This habitat is a place for bee pollination and a feeding ground for quail, so we are contributing to efforts against reductions in wildlife numbers in Kentucky, which were tending to decline. This habitat is also used as a place for local residents to learn about the environment. In addition, reforestation activities are being carried out at Hitachi Automotive Systems Mexico, S.A. de C.V. Lerma Plant and Hitachi Automotive Systems Asia’s Gateway Plant so we are promoting local ecosystem conservation activities.
