Chichester Psalms – III – translation from Hebrew

Psalm 131:1-3 Adonai, Adonai Lord, Lord
Lo gavah libi, My heart is not haughty,
V’lo ramu einai Nor mine eyes lofty,
V’lo hilachti Neither do I exercise myself
Big’dolot uv’niflaot In great matters or in things
                   Mimeni. Too wonderful for me.
Im lo shiviti Surely I have calmed
                   V’domam’ti, And quieted myself,
Naf’shi k’gamul alei imo, As a child that is weaned of his mother,
Kagamul alai naf’shi. My soul is even as a weaned child.
Yaḥel Yis’rael el Adonai Let Israel hope in the Lord
Me'atah v’ad olam. From henceforth and forever.

Psalm 133:1 Hineh mah tov, Behold how good,
Umah nayim, And how pleasant it is,
Shevet aḥim For brethren to dwell
                   Gam yaḥad. Together in unity.

About the Artists

Cody Austin
Cody's Haddonfield appearances began when he was attending Philadelphia's prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts.
As a member of the HUMC Chancel Choir and a frequent soloist with the NJ MasterChorale during his student
days, he is well-known to many in the church's congregation as well as this program's audience. His ensuing
operatic career has included performances with opera companies in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Sarasota, Knoxville,
Tampa and also in Sweden. Recently, Cody became a founding member of Bad Boys of Opera, a new touring
concert production featuring three highly-acclaimed male opera stars. In addition, other concert work has taken
him from Beijing to Dubai as well as several cities across the USA. Welcome back, Cody!

Sae Hashimoto
Hailing from Osaka, Japan, Sae Hashimoto is an exhilarating percussionist in New York City. Her unique
performance has been described as "seductive yet sharp" by the New York Times, and "remarkably dynamic" in
the New York Classical Review. She has served as guest timpanist with the New York Philharmonic and the New
York City Ballet Orchestras. Since September 2018 she has been a member of Ensemble Connect, a program based
at Carnegie Hall that combines musical excellence with education, advocacy, and entrepreneurship. Sae was a
recipient of the Kovner Fellowship at the Juilliard School where she received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees.

Jan Schopfer
Jan, of Manlius, NY, has been honored to share the joy of music her entire life. First learning the recorder at age 5
and being a self-taught pianist by age 8, she began solo bell ringing in the ‘70s. She is a member of the
Philadelphia Handbell Ensemble and HUMC’s Holtz Handbell Choir. Besides bells, recorders, voice and piano,
she also plays the melodica, penny whistle, krummhorn, baritone, autoharp, and xylophone. Memorable musical
moments overall include singing at Carnegie Hall, playing 6-hands piano in concert, and being the featured
recorder soloist for NJ MasterChorale with members of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Matthew Smith
Matt has served as the Organist at Haddonfield UMC since January 2017, and was recently appointed
Organist/Choirmaster at HUMC. He obtained his Master of Music degree from Princeton, New Jersey’s
Westminster Choir College in May 2017. He was awarded First Place at the 2017 Joan Lippincott Competition for
Excellence in Organ Performance and continues to perform recitals on organ at various venues. Matt’s most
recent recital as featured organist at the 2020 Mi Wha Lee Memorial Recital can be enjoyed by visiting HUMC’s
website (haddonfieldumc.org) or our YouTube channel.

Chrystal E. Williams
Chrystal’s recent past seasons’ engagements have included her 2019 debut at the Metropolitan Opera and
appearances at other major venues in the United States and abroad, including performances under the batons of
Sir Simon Rattle and Yannick Nezet-Seguin. The upcoming season sees the launch of “Forropera”, which she co-
created with duo partner, Brazilian accordionist Felipe Hostins, who appears with her in this performance. An
alumna of Philadelphia’s world-renowned Academy of Vocal Arts, Chrystal also holds a Master of Music degree in
Opera Performance from the Yale School of Music and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Voice Performance from
Carnegie Mellon University.

Jackie Williams
Jackie studied piano with Eleanor Sokoloff and Susan Starr after moving with her family, from Ann Arbor to
Haddonfield, at age 10. She received a B.A. in music from Barnard College, moved back to NJ, and taught piano
for many years. Jackie has accompanied the NJ MasterChorale in An Evening with Rossini, served as interim
rehearsal accompanist prior to the hire of Matthew Smith, and appreciates opportunities to play and accompany
in worship. Jackie currently serves as President of NJ MasterChorale, having been a singer in NJMC, as well as in
the HUMC Chancel Choir, for 13 years.

Christine Wu
Violinist Christine Wu performs internationally with appearances in New York's Carnegie Hall, Cleveland, Dallas
and also Magdeburg and Kothen, Germany. In October 2021 she will be presenting a full program of works for
solo violin and for solo viola as one of six finalists for the Berlin Prize for Young Artists Competition. Her
leadership roles culminated most recently as Concertmaster with the New York String Orchestra. Christine grew
up in Dallas, holds a bachelor's degree from Cleveland Institute of Music, received a master's degree from Julliard,
and is currently pursuing a Professional Studies Certificate at the Manhattan School of Music.
