Dear Preschool Families,
We are committed to helping your child continue to learn from home during this challenging time using a
combination of Distance Learning Activities and Online Resources. Within this packet are activities that align
to the curricular focus areas that your child would have been learning in their preschool classroom during the
weeks that schools are closed. In addition to reading to your child every day, enjoy engaging with your child using these
suggested Distance Learning Activities.
How to use your Distance Learning Activities?
Each week you will be provided an English Language Arts (ELA) and Math Distance Learning Activity packet either by visiting the
FUSD Website www.fusd.net/learning or picking up a printed paper packet. In each packet, there will be ELA Activities and
Math Activities. You can choose to do them in any order. Each activity can be individualized to your child’s developmental
level. Use the extension ideas to provide a more challenging activity. Each activity is expected to last between 10 to 30
minutes in length, depending on your child’s interests and attention span. We encourage you to make this time engaging and
fun.
You can share your child’s schoolwork with their Preschool Teacher by submitting a photo or video online through a classroom
online tool, or you may drop off your child’s Distance Learning work at the school site on May 21st or 22nd.

matemáticas, ya sea visitando el sitio web del FUSD www.fusd.net/learning o recogiendo un paquete de papel impreso en la

for Home Activities
▪ The following list provides ideas that are good strategies to use with all children. Generally, give
children choices as much as possible. This will help them develop a sense of control over their world and
good communication skills. Do not give a choice that is not really an option.
▪ Offer alternative ways to communicate wants, needs and choices. Allow your child to use a variety of
communication strategies such as: gestures, sound approximations, and/or facial expressions. Create
needs for communication throughout the day.
▪ Provide breaks in between activities. Providing a break may help your child to regroup if the stimulation
of the activity is too intense.
▪ Allow for many opportunities throughout the day for repetition and practice.
▪ Select a time during the day to work on the activities. Be consistent with the time you have selected.
Provide visual or auditory cues to transition your child to the activity. Creating a daily routine will give
your child more control over his environment and he will allow him to know what to expect every day.
• To assist your child to transition out of the activity or to clean-up, give him/her a 5-minute verbal or
visual reminder. Don’t be afraid to use combinations of cues. You can ring a bell, sing a clean-up song,
turn the lights on and off or develop a picture cue for transition time.
Other Adaptations:
ART
• When using markers, crayons or paint brushes, adapt handles to make them easier to grasp. Handles
may be built up with tape, foam or other materials you may have around the house.
• Experiment with using other materials in painting projects that may be easier to grasp. For example:
sponges, combs, hairbrushes, toothbrushes, drinking straws to blow paint.
• Tape drawing paper to table if more stability is needed. If you have access to a fence or outdoor wall
you can tape or paper clip paper to hang it for an outdoor experience.
READING
• Identify a variety of ways that your child can interact or respond during reading time. Your child may
participate by speaking, pointing to pictures, holding the book, turning pages, etc.

interests. This will allow your child to talk about their day by pointing to the objects. Words can be
added so that it is expanded to an early literacy activity.

page so there is more room to slip in a finger and turn pages.
MATH
• Count during everyday situations. Model counting, from 1 to 5, 1-10 or up to the number your child
can count. Use items in your households. Point at each item as you count. Emphasizing that we use
one counting word for each object: “One...two...three...”
• Identify shapes found around the house (e.g., a square or a triangle standing on a corner, a cylinder
“standing up” or horizontal).
• Involve your child in constructing shapes with sticks, straws, playdough, and talking about the features
of the shapes they are construction (e.g., has 4 corners, 3 sides, etc.)
• Encourage your child to make pictures of familiar objects using shapes. You may use blocks, paper
shapes, or other materials you may have in your house.
• Engage your child in matching the color of their shirt/top/dress with items around the house.
• Have your child sort and organize household items such as clothes, eating utensils, toys by color, size,
shape, etc. If your child has a difficult time sorting, model for him/her.
These are only suggested guidelines to help you increase access and enhance your child’s distance learning
experience. Providing options and choices in engagement, representation and action and expression is
important for all learners.
