OPENING WORD 3 Ladies and Gentlemen, dear friends of the MGH, as the founding fathers gathered in the Frankfurt home of Reichsfreiherr Karl vom und zum Stein on 20 January 1819 to form a private society they called the Monumenta Germaniae Historica, they could hardly have imagined that their association would one day become an internationally recognised research institute with contacts and fellows throughout the world. Rather, they were convinced that their proclaimed goal of editing the complete Medieval Latin source material of the German Fatherland could be accomplished within the timespan of one generation. Generations came and went, the private society became a research institute with its seat in Munich since 1967. But the MGH today are much more than just the Munich institute. Numerous researchers work for the MGH in external branches at the Academies of the Sciences in Berlin, Vienna, Leipzig, Düsseldorf, and Hamburg. Furthermore, scholars in various European countries and in the USA also contribute editions and monographs for the MGH. These many editors, largely working on a voluntary basis, are of elementary importance to fulfilling the MGH edition programme, and 200 years later it is still far from finished. Our bicentenary celebrations reflect these realities: Since the Monumenta are dependent on many people working in many places, we will therefore also be celebrating not just in Munich, but at a number of locations. It is our hope that we, the staff and researchers of the Munich institute and the external branches of the MGH, have succeeded in creating a programme which will, on the one hand, stimulate your interest and, on the other, demonstrate and contribute to the sense of community among “Monumentists”! I warmly invite all of you who share this feeling of community with the MGH to participate in one or more of our bicentennial celebrations. In the coming events of this anniversary year, let us together set milestones for the future of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica! Yours sincerely, Martina Hartmann PRESIDENT

6 JANUARY 2019 The MGH section „Diplomata“, Vienna As early as 1875, Theodor von Sickel, the director of the Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung, was entrusted with leading the MGH section „Diplomata“. In 1904, Viennese charter specialists were officially commissioned with editing the royal and imperial charters of the Hohenstaufen in the name of the MGH. Despite the many political and academic vicissitudes of the interceding decades, the Austrian editors have meanwhile succeeded in publishing the charters of King Lothar III, King Conrad III, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and King Philipp of Swabia in the MGH Diplomata series. Work on the charters of Emperor Henry VI and Emperor Otto IV is still in progress in Vienna, while the task of editing the charters of Emperor Frederick II has been handed over to the Bavarian Akademie der Wissenschaften, albeit under Austrian direction. At present, two projects at the Austrian Akademie der Wissenschaften and a third project at the Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung continue the "Diplomata" tradition in Vienna. 8 FEBRUARY 2019 The MGH Berlin branch at the Akademie der Wissenschaften, Berlin-Brandenburg Although the MGH were initially founded in Frankfurt am Main, they moved to Berlin shortly thereafter in 1842 following their director, Georg Heinrich Pertz, and a number of his colleagues. More than one hundred years later, during the Second World War the institute was evacuated from Berlin to Pommersfelden in Bavaria together with its library, the president and some female members of staff, leaving a mere "torso" with reduced personnel in the capital city. At the end of hostilities, the Berlin institute was integrated into the East-German Akademie der Wissenschaften and existed in this form until the fall of the Iron Curtain. After the German reunification, it formed the nucleus for the MGH branch at the Akademie der Wissenschaften in Berlin-Brandenburg, becoming the second largest office of the MGH after the Munich institute. The Berlin branch is responsible for publishing the series „MGH Constitutiones et acta publica imperatorum et regum“ containing critical editions of the fundamental source material for the constitution history of the Holy Roman Empire in the fourteenth century. Since 1974, it has issued seven copious volumes covering the reigns of Emperors Charles IV and Louis IV, the Bavarian.
