Edition 3 26 February 2021 (L – R) Jack Beresford, Charlie Baldwin and Khaled Mohamed Inthisham enjoy working on one of the new interactive flat panels, with this one being in Mrs Galbraith’s classroom.
From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents The Junior School Ladies’ Soiree was held on Saturday evening last weekend. This was an elegant occasion organised by the Junior School Supporters’ Group as a community building event. It was wonderful to see mothers who are new to the School joining those who have been associated with the School for a while relaxing and enjoying this social occasion. Our new Headmaster, Dr Kinniburgh and his wife, Jo were also in attendance on the evening which was appreciated. I thank Mrs Bliss Bierhoff, President of the Junior School Supporters’ Group and Ms Tessa Chamberlain, Vice President for organising this event at Impressions on Scott. Congratulations to the mothers who won prizes on the evening and I look forward to a more normal range of community building events occurring this year. Interactive Flat Panels (IFPs) Our approach to technology in the Junior School continues to progress. Last year we conducted a Pilot Project trialling Interactive Flat Panels in our three Year 6 classrooms, with a fourth one being installed in our staff room for training purposes. This product is far superior to Interactive Whiteboards, which also require projectors. We are now into Stage 2 with this technology, which has moved beyond a trial phase. IFPs were installed in our Year 1 and Year 3 classrooms during the holidays, with the aim to instal more in other classrooms later in the year. An IFP is basically a large touch screen with a computer embedded in the product. Teachers and students can work directly from these screens and students can broadcast their work onto the screen for the class to view. There are many other advantages, with this being a very clean, elegant piece of technology. We are very pleased to be investing in your boys’ futures in our classrooms. Trial Online lessons While there is a greater sense of normality with much that is occurring in schools at present, we are still very conscious of what could occur in response to COVID cases occurring in Queensland. Teachers and boys have been involved in online lessons over the past few weeks, ensuring we are prepared if we need to return to online learning in the future. All boys for Year 1 to Year 6 have a school laptop and the Prep boys have access to iPads. While we hope that a return to online learning does not occur, we are well prepared for this approach should it eventuate. The boys in 2N participating in their online lesson. Outdoor Education For most year levels, Outdoor Education typically occurs late in first term. Further correspondence is provided by class teachers and was sent to parents this week. The destinations and dates are outlined below for your reference and for parents to understand our graduated approach from Prep to Year 6. Year Group and Venue Dates Prep and Year 1 Picnic at Peacehaven Park, Friday 19 March Highfields, with Fairholme College Year 2 Sleepover at School Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 March Year 3 and 4 Camp at Sunshine Coast Monday 15 to Wednesday 17 March Recreation Centre Year 5 Camp to Tallebudgera (Gold Coast) Monday 15 to Thursday 18 March Year 6 TBA Dates TBA Due to reservations relating to interstate travel and COVID-19, our Year 6 boys and staff will not visit Canberra this year. The decision has been taken to provide these boys with an experience in Queensland later this year. More information will be provided next week. These experiences provide age-appropriate challenges for the boys in an outdoor setting and are aimed at developing boys’ character. I hope your son finds his adventure rewarding.
Class / Year Level Facebook pages Within our Junior School community, there are a number of class or year level Facebook pages in operation. One parent in each year level controls the setup and the basic parameters are as follows: • These operate as closed groups • There is no compulsion to be a member • As these pages relate to our School, gossip including distasteful or inappropriate commentary about children, parents or staff is not acceptable. These Facebook pages are predominately used for communication between parents, relating to school matters. These Facebook pages are helpful for the following reasons: • Checking what the boys have for homework • Promotion of School based social events • Chasing up lost property • Checking arrangements relating to school events (e.g. Blazer Uniform, excursions, GPS sport and so on). While there is no compulsion for any parents to join these groups, there is clearly a benefit in terms of communication, resulting in better organised boys. You may wish to consider this approach. Regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School From the Deputy Head of Junior School Schools Clean Up Australia Day, Friday 5 March Your son will be involved in the 2021 Schools’ Clean Up Australia Day on Friday 5 March. The areas allocated to the Junior School will be the streets surrounding the School site and the school grounds. The boys will be fully supervised during the experience and will also do this in their “Mates” groups. The boys will need to bring along a pair of rubber gloves (disposable ones are fine) and a bag for the collection of litter. Co-curricular Clubs The boys experienced the 2021 start to the Junior School Clubs last week. It was great to see so many boys take advantage of the variety on offer. Just a reminder that the Clubs start at 3.15pm and end at 4.15pm. I urge that you please collect your son immediately after the club concludes. As mentioned in a previous Newsletter, boys who are not collected on time will be taken to After-School Care.
School Banking School Banking (Commonwealth Dollarmite Accounts) continues to operate with Dollarmite account deposits being dropped off at the office each Tuesday morning in the collection box. For those students who don’t yet have a school banking account with the Commonwealth Bank, parents are asked that they look online via the CBA website for this information and open accounts online accordingly. Students also receive various rewards for deposit targets reached. Please encourage you son to open a Dollarmite account and make regular deposits. Nude Food Day Just a reminder that Nude Food Day occurs each Tuesday in the Junior School. The boys are encouraged to bring to school food that is not prepacked for morning tea and lunch. Many boys are continuing to do this each day which is certainly encouraged. Mike Sharpe Deputy Head of Junior School Music News Musicians’ Concert Our first Musicians’ Concert for the term will be held on Thursday 11 March and nominations are open to all musicians from Prep – Year 6. A note with all details was sent home last week. Nomination forms are due on Thursday 4 March. If your son is currently receiving private music tuition, I encourage him to speak to his teacher to discuss the possibility of this upcoming performance opportunity. Ensemble Leaders and Captain of Music nomination form Voting for Ensemble Leaders and Captain of Music occurred this week. Mr Campbell has overseen this process and collated the voting forms. Music leadership positions will be announced at the Musicians’ Concert on Thursday 11 March. Ensemble rehearsals Please note that Ensembles are not considered clubs and therefore rehearse every week of the term. If your son is absent from a rehearsal, it would be appreciated if you could please email the conductor of the ensemble to inform them of his absence. From the Prep – Year 3 Coordinator The beginning of the year has been filled with great enthusiasm for the year ahead. Prep students are settling in really well and showing confidence in their ability to cope with the first time in a formal school setting. They feel very grown up at morning tea and lunch being able to sit at tables like they are at a café eating their food. Year 1 have been learning to coordinate many uniforms throughout the week and trying their best to master the art of shoelace tying. The playground looks a little different for Year 2 as they no longer play in the sandpit but are loving being able to access the rocket ship every day along with a bigger football/touch field. Our older boys downstairs, Year 3 are showing great leadership and helping the younger boys move to the correct playgrounds and moving between lessons with great maturity. It has been so lovely to be able to speak to parents face to face before and after school ensuring the transition into a new year is positive and smooth. We look forward to updating you on our progress next term. Jess Galbraith + Prep – Year 3 Coordinator Self-Regulation Program In the Junior School we are committed to helping all students achieve their potential, both socially and academically. We believe a significant part of our role is to work in collaboration with parents to develop well rounded young men. This year, as part of our Pastoral Care Program (REACH), we have implemented programs which focus on self-regulation. The 5-week programs are designed to help students engage in an attentive manner with their teachers, their classmates, and with their learning. Simple strategies are taught with the aim of helping the boys to become engaged, mindful learners. These self-regulation programs operate in small groups across several year levels. Students are nominated for inclusion in the program by their classroom teachers and approved by the Head of Junior School, Mr Scott Campbell. We endeavour to provide access to these programs to many students throughout the year. Mr Mike Sharpe Lucy MacFarlane Deputy Head of Junior School Student Wellbeing Teacher
