About ECIS is proud to provide the opportunity for European Council of International Schools (ECIS) and Association of American Schools in South America (AASSA) member schools to publish courses and podcasts on its very own ECIS iTunes U site. Participating schools are using ECIS iTunes U as a conduit through which they enhance and support learning by developing comprehensive courses, podcasts containing mini-lessons, published student work and other enriching assets available for student use at any place and any time. ECIS iTunes U began as an idea arising from Munich International School’s (MIS) Math Department, who were beginning to podcast for their students and wanted to make their podcasts available to any student worldwide who may benefit from them. After much collaboration between ECIS, MIS and Apple, ECIS iTunes U was officially launched in April 2011. The ECIS iTunes U Team Leah Treesh is the ECIS consultant who manages ECIS iTunes U. She collaborates with ECIS and Apple to provide support to schools wishing to participate and runs the “behind the scenes” details. If you would like to learn more about ECIS iTunes U, have special content featured, or have suggestions for improvement, please contact her directly at Leah.Treesh@1to1LT.com or fill out the contact form at 1to1LT.com. Pia Druggan, the visual artist behind ECIS iTunes U, volunteers much of her time to the create the visual elements of our site, including banners and icons. Her contributions are greatly appreciated.
Why Publish with ECIS iTunes U? As an ECIS or AASSA member school, you are afforded support throughout the entire process, from the idea stage, to creation, to publication. In addition, your courses and podcasts will receive much more traffic, as traffic will be generated by all participating schools as a whole. Teachers and students from your school visiting the site may find content from other similar member schools which they find helpful as well. General Process EXPRESSING INTEREST Should you like more information or want to add your school to the growing list of participants, fill out the interest form found here. Upon submission of your form, you should receive an email outlining the steps below. Should you not receive an email from us, please email your details to Leah at Leah.Treesh@1to1LT.com. SCHOOL’S FIRST STEPS 1. Email iTunesU@ecis.org with the subject areas, grade levels and names of those who wish to begin podcasting and/or providing courses. This should be done by someone chosen to serve as the central contact point. Please attach your school’s logo to the email. 2. All those interested in submitting podcasts should watch the Getting Started with ECIS iTunes U podcasts. 3. Review the iTunes U General Terms of Use (See Appendix) with each interested party. 4. Ask your Head of School/Principal to submit a response to the automated email he/she received with a link to the online agreement form. Upon receipt of the agreement, we will create the podcast feeds and email you when they are ready.
CREATING COURSES Anyone can begin creating a course at anytime by visiting the following url: https:// itunesu.itunes.apple.com/coursemanager/ and following the given instructions. In order to prepare for publication, your course title should include the subject area followed by the grade level(s). The subtitle should include your school’s name followed by, if desired, a colon and your name. Your course icon will be provided by ECIS, as it needs to include the ECIS logo and fit into the page’s overall design. We encourage you to consider beginning with creating a course instead of a basic podcast, even if you are starting with just a podcast itself. This will allow you to easily expand your offerings over time, should you choose to do so at a later date. PUBLISHING COURSES In order for a course to be published, it needs to be associated with an organization’s iTunes U site, in our case, ECIS iTunes U. Once your course has been populated with content, you will need to take the following steps in order for the course to appear on the ECIS page: 1. Under Course Settings, click "submit request to place course in iTunes U catalogue". 2. Double check the veracity of your content and its conformity to copyright law and intellectual property law and ethics. 2. Email iTunesU@ecis.org with the course link. 3. Wait for confirmation of receipt of course link and your course icon, which will be designed for you at this time (typically within 3 - 5 days). 4. Upload the course icon provided in the response email. 5. Email iTunesU@ecis.org when the icon has been uploaded. 6. Wait for confirmation of publication (typically within 24 hours). Once a course has been published, all other course updates and additions will automatically be published.
CREATING PODCASTS Podcasts can be created using a variety of tools ranging from the very simple to the complex. If you need more information on how podcasts themselves are created, please email iTunesU@ecis.org for support. Regardless of which tool you choose to use, it is important that the resulting file type is compatible with iTunes. Acceptable audio file extensions are .m4a and .mp3. Acceptable video file extensions are mp4, .m4v and .mov. Before beginning, please review the iTunes U information carefully. Should you have any questions or comments concerning this means of enhanced learning, please email iTunesU@ecis.org. Also, take time to review the Podcasting Like a Pro presentation included with the ECIS iTunes U Course to learn more purposes for and types of podcasts and for tips on helping to ensure that your episodes are effective and well received. PUBLISHING PODCASTS When you begin creating podcasts, you will need to take the following steps in order for you to publish a podcast feed on the ECIS page: 1. Email iTunesU@ecis.org with the subject area and grade level for your podcast feed. 2. Wait to receive login information and instructions on how to upload podcasts (typically within 24 hours). 3. After you have uploaded 5 podcasts, email iTunesU@ecis.org requesting a course icon and publication. Once your episodes have been reviewed and your icon is ready, your feed will be published (typically within 3 - 5 days). Once a podcast feed has been published, all additional uploaded episodes will appear automatically.
ECIS Expectations All content published on ECIS iTunes U should strictly adhere to copyright and intellectual property law and ethics and be factually accurate. Courses and podcasts should reflect a high level of professionalism. Although major edits of podcasts in order to remove minor imperfections such as small background noises or momentary changes in lighting are not necessary, attention should be paid that said podcasts are of a quality which well represent ECIS and the given school. Additionally, courses and podcasts should be created with pedagogically sound, age appropriate techniques. For more information on what this entails, please see Podcasting Like a Pro and contact iTunesU@ecis.org with any questions or support requests.
