is sadly behind closed doors this year. The last 12
months have been a difficult time for everyone as
we deal with the effects of the Covid 19 virus, but at
last the end looks in sight and hopefully we will be
able to welcome people back to our racecourses very
soon. I would like to thank everyone who has helped
keep our great industry going over the last 12 months

SUNDAY 4TH APRIL 2021FRANK & TERESA O’REILLY AND FAIRYHOUSE The O’Reilly family involvement with Fairyhouse goes back over 140 years as Joseph Richard O’Reilly was Honorary Secretary of the Ward Union Hunt in the 1880’s. In his honour after his death the Joseph R. O’Reilly Trophy was given for hunter chasers and this was one of the top hunter chases for many years with legendary names like PP Hogan gracing the trophy. Frank O’Reilly (a grandson of Joseph R) more than continued this involvement. He became a director of Fairyhouse in 1948, Chairman in 1991 and on retiring in 2001, was made Honorary Life President. Through the family company, John Power & Son, Frank sponsored the Powers Gold Cup in 1959 and it became Ireland’s longest sponsored race with an illustrious roll of winners including Arkle, Captain Christy and Bobsline. As chairman of Irish Distillers, he was instrumental in them becoming huge supporters of Fairyhouse as they sponsored the Irish Grand National for many years as well as a host of other races not to mention their involvement in the Powers Gold Label Stand and the Jameson Stand which were built and opened in 1999. By his side through all his years at Fairyhouse was Frank’s wife Teresa who was another big Fairyhouse fan, having started hunting with the Ward Union in 1943. One of her great friends on the hunting field was Pansy Cannon, a sister of Tom Dreaper, another family intricately linked to Fairyhouse. The O’Reilly family are delighted to be sponsoring today’s race and continue the family involvement in one of Ireland’s premier horse racing venues.

HORSE WELFARE – A PRIORITY
At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary
surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing.
There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the
horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs.
It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving
veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy
to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume
the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross
ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable
yard for further treatment if necessary.
A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess
and treat any horses requiring such attention post race.
The horses’ welfare is always our priority.
