First Selectman’s Corner

who don’t agree with an issue are commonplace everywhere
you turn. The national debate on politics and ideology has trick-
led down to the local level. Friends and neighbors are squaring
off on local pages with great regularity these days. Social media
has evolved into a platform for everyone’s opinion… and for
those who disagree… watch out! What once unified us, now
divides us.
We need peace. I am asking everyone in our community to take
a step back and create some serenity and civility in our online
presence. I have committed to it… I hope you will too. It’s time
to take a deep breath. Maybe we all should commit to counting
to 10 before responding to someone. Even better, perhaps we
can all promise to take our hands off the keyboard and “sleep
on it” before hitting the send button and lashing out at someone
in a fit of rage.
None of us are perfect, but we need to try harder to be better.
Never has St. Francis of Assisi’s Peace Prayer been more need-
ed than in today’s world. In it, he personally asks his God for
the grace to bring love, forgiveness, harmony, faith, hope, light

Foundation Offers Scholarships
for Use of the Pool!
We all started 2021 with renewed vigor hoping for a great year, and probably
made resolutions to be more active. What have you done to meet those activity
resolutions?
Did you know that our community pool, the Aquatic and Fitness Center locat-
ed at the high school, reopened last June for lap swimming? You can sign up for
lanes during specific time slots and payment is handled online. They follow strict
COVID-19 guidelines to keep you safe. And while lap swimming is the only
choice available presently, the Center foresees the resumption of all activities

If you need financial assistance, please apply through the East Lyme Aquatics &
Fitness Center Foundation! We encourage you to reach out if you want to make
use of the pool but find the cost a hardship. The applications are short and easily
found at https://www.elafcfoundation.org/. Alternatively, a request for an appli-
cation may be made via the Foundation’s email at: elpoolfoundation@aol.com.
Selection of recipients will be made by the Foundation’s Board Members of local
volunteers.
The East Lyme Aquatic & Fitness Center Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3)
organization that offers financial aid and/or scholarships to East Lyme and Salem
community residents in need of sponsorship for pool and fitness center activities.
