Product-Level Transparency NBTA products strive for the highest level of performance and protection with the lowest impact on the planet. Proper chemical management is key to ensuring safety for all persons and environments touched by our supply chain. Our Chemical Management and Restricted Substance List (RSL) policy ensures NBTA products and packaging materials are not only in compliance with global regulations but additionally amplify our rigorous process of selecting sustainable materials and manufacturing methods. We use the below metrics to measure our impact, analyze progress starting in F19, and set targets each season. Marmot’s F21 goals are outlined below: F19 F19 F19 20 20 F20 F20 20 F21 F21 F20 F21 Recycled Content: We believe in PFC-Free DWR: Outdoor apparel is bluesign® certified materials: The making top-tier performance designed to keep you dry. Traditional bluesign® certification process pieces while simultaneously taking manufacturing techniques have relied on helps us make progress towards a items out of the waste stream. We fluorocarbon-based durable water world of low- or no-pollutant leverage partnerships with groups resistant (DWR) coatings to help garments textiles, environmentally and like Thread to help bring traceable, shed water, yet some of these chemicals human-friendly production and recycled content into our fabrics persist indefinitely in the environment and using less of the world’s limited and the Global Recycled Standard pose potential health risk. NBTA resources. Although no longer is used to substantiate our eliminated Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) system partners, NBTA uses recycled claims to consumers. By in 2015 and is making progress to certifications that our suppliers Fall 2021, 50% of Marmot’s eliminate per-fluorinated chemicals receive for materials as a third- volume will use recycled, upcycled, (PFCs), however as a performance driven party certification of more and renewable materials. company we will likely not completely environmentally friendly materials. eliminate PFCs in some pinnacle pieces. To make our process easy to understand for consumers, we’ve developed a product rating system to communicate environmental performance levels on our outerwear and sleeping bags through the use of Good-Better- Best ratings starting in Spring 2020. How it works: Hangtags display an icon for each criteria (bluesign® certified material, recycled content, and PFC Free DWR). When met, green text explains specifics as seen on the ‘Best’ hangtag. When not met, grey text explains that Marmot is a performance driven brand and sustainable alternatives will be used when they don’t compromise performance. When a product meets 1 of 3 criterion they are ranked good, 2 of 3 as better, and all 3 as best. Products that do not meet any of our sustainability criteria, will not receive any rating/hangtag. This rating system only compares product impact in relation to other Marmot products.
The Planet What we make is great clothing and equipment. By why we make it lies at the heart of the Marmot mission. We are a company of athletes and adventures who love the outdoors. We are motivated by the enjoyment and celebration of the riches and beauty of the natural world and the chance to share those experiences with others. The Planet components of the Marmot sustainability program are dedicated to preserving the planet and its inhabitants and to making nature and outdoor experiences available to all. For every pound of virgin material produced, 70 lbs. of industrial waste is created upstream. So what can NBTA do? Start an in house sustainability movement, starting with eliminating plastic in the office. 3 Simple things we will implement in the office Eliminate plastic in the office 1 When we return to the office, all NBTA kitchens will be fully stocked with real dishes and silverware. Get more steps, Save trash bags 2 Ever notice that if you throw just one thing in the garbage under your desk, the next day you have a fresh bag? To mitigate the amount of trash bags we waste, desk trash cans will be eliminated and additional large trash cans will be placed throughout the building. Start Composting! 3 Did you know? NBTA will begin proper disposal of food, waste, and recycling. California disposes approximately 30 million tons of waste in landfills each year, of which more than 30% could be used for compost or mulch. There is now more plastic in the ocean than plankton in the sea. Once you throw a material away in the trash, your hands are the last human hands to touch it. The garbage is not sorted, but hauled landfill. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the decomposition of organic wastes in landfills are a significant source of emissions contributing to global climate change Leave a legacy, Not a footprint
Industry Glossary Industry Associations The apparel, footwear, and textile industry’s leading global alliance for sustainable production. Formed in 2009 by Patagonia and Walmart with the goal of building an eco-index tool for sustainability assessment (eventually lead to the Higg Index). NBTA is not a member due to expensive fees. OIA is another membership-driven trade organization, more specific to our business and in January announced a new focus on climate action, increasing the necessity for outdoor brands to calculate and understand their carbon footprint. NBTA attends sustainability working group (SWG) meetings twice a year at OR, hosted by OIA. The SAC took over the Higg Index in 2014, combining OIA’s Eco-index tool and Nike’s Environmental Design tool. Higg Co. was recently established as a for profit technology company implementing the Higg Suite of tools. The Higg Index has been constantly evolving, consistently with the goal to enable brands, retailers, and facilities to accurately measure and score a company or product’s sustainability performances. There are three separate modules: Brand, Product, and Facility. Most of NBTA’s factories track their footprint using the Facility modules. Product Claims OIA down task force created the Responsible Down Standard in response to concerns of force feeding and live plucking in 2011. The standard itself certifies feathers from our down supplier than tracks those feathers through the factory and into each individual product. We have only been sourcing RDS down for years and get audited annually. While RDS was slowly being developed, Patagonia created their own standard, TDS. RDS is more established and “good enough” so nobody else besides Patagonia uses TDS. It is a very similar certification, but the actual down is 40% more expensive (avg. inc. cost per product $16 – ranges $2-5 for outerwear and up to $50 for sleeping bags). Paying for greater level of risk assurance due to higher sampling rates. Wool can be certified through similar processes as down. Currently, less than 1% of NBTA products use wool and when we do use wool it is typically recycled wool which can’t be certified by RWS, so we do not currently prioritize this certification. RDS is used to substantiate our recycled claims on Marmot’s product sustainability labeling. Certificate of proof that material was really recycled.
Industry Glossary Manufacturing Claims Brands will pay a 1-2% of FOB additional per product and the money goes directly to factory workers; funds accumulate in a worker managed bank account and used to create things such as an eye clinic, free breakfast, etc. Although some of our factories are Fairtrade certified, NBTA product is not. WRAP is a social compliance certificate program that Europe specifically values. Currently about 15% of our inline products are made in factories with WRAP certification. Packaging Claims Forest Stewardship Council certification provides assurance that paper/cardboard comes from forests that were managed responsibly (ie: deforestation, land use change, illegal harvesting) - addressing both environmental and social considerations. All hangtags are FSC certified. How2Recycle communicates to consumers that they can recycle the product labeled. Newell Brands invested in the use of this logo and it will be added to our S21 hangtags to inform customers to recycle the tag once they wear NBTA product. Chemical Certifications/Regulations RSL A restricted substance list is used to give suppliers a guideline of chemicals that cannot be used in NBTA product. REACH: Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of chemicals. European Union regulation that started in 2007 to eliminate Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). It is critical to have all suppliers sign our RSL (confirming compliance with REACH) because the cost to test if a product contains any SVHC can range from $4k for a jacket up to $10k for a sleeping bag. Brands have 30 days to prove compliance if requested. The bluesign® system is based on partnering with brands and suppliers to focus on tangible improvements in five key areas: resource productivity, consumer safety, water emission, air emission, and occupational health & safety. Bluesign is a consulting company with a heavy focus on tiers 1 and 2, less benefits for brands, so we are no longer bluesign® system partners, but still track bluesign® certified materials because bluesign® has the worlds strictest chemical safety requirements for textiles. Similar to bluesign’s material certification with the same mission of cleaning up the chemistry used in the textile industry. Another group with the goal of eliminating harmful chemicals. Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals has created a Roadmap to Zero program.
