I’m Thankful for the Endurance of Teachers, Parents, and Students! What’s Next?
                                      Dr. Jim Johnson, ECA Superintendent
“Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing
of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may
be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” I Corinthians 1:2-4
Scripture never promises an absence of trials, and if COVID-19 has been anything, it has been a trial.
Allow me to state how encouraged I have been with the way in which our teachers, parents, and students have
responded to this worldwide trial. When unexpectedly faced with the challenge of closing the doors to our
school and adopting a completely different way of facilitating learning, the ECA family responded in an
amazing way. Leveraging the strengths and gifting of everyone involved, all eyes were on the successful
completion of the 4th Quarter of education in a way consistent with our Mission Statement. It really took a
complete team effort to “educate, equip, and empower students to pursue their purpose in Christ” during these
unprecedented times. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you who played an important part in
finishing the school year well.
I would love to recount the many stories of self-sacrifice made for the continued education of our students,
even when many around us were giving up. At times I am tempted to brag on our ECA family for your
endurance during testing, but I dare not; and while I am thankful, I am not necessarily surprised at the mettle
exercised by everyone who stayed the course. So, again, thank you for “sticking with it” during this challenge!
Regarding the future of classes at ECA, as tough as it is to begin thinking about the future, our conscience
demands it. Many wonder what the future will bring, and I am pleased to tell you that your ECA Board and
administrators have already begun addressing this question, including the following points:
1. An ECA education is better when delivered “in-person.” While it is clear that a great job of Christian
education was done under difficult circumstances, ECA does its best work when teachers are eyeball-to-eyeball
with students. We yearn for the days we can be back on campus, in the classroom, doing our best work.
2. If we could resume now, the laws would permit for us to hold school on campus. Some of our classes
were able to meet during the last couple of weeks of school, and the current guidelines would permit us to meet
in “cohorts” or “pods” of 10 people today; and we project that we could find suitable meeting spaces within our
existing facilities to gather in these small groups for core instruction, ancillary courses, or other activities like
lunch and recess.
3. Can we guarantee we will always meet at school? We have never been able to guarantee the ability to
meet. Off-campus instruction days have been used for a number of years due to unpredictable occurrences of
snow days. However, let’s be candid: the laws relative to COVID-19 have been fluid from the beginning of the
pandemic. But as we become intimately acquainted with these new laws, I am optimistic that we can reduce the
probability of the spread of this disease; and in working closely with the El Paso County Health Department
through “rapid response” to any potential outbreak, we can reduce time spent away from the classroom.
4. We welcome your family and children back to ECA! The culture at ECA is one that faces the challenges
of life head on, even when they weigh us down occasionally. I know our teachers want each child to succeed to
the glory of God, and we are all willing to strive together for a safe and normal school environment next year.
I pray you and your family have a restful and blessed summer together. And after we all take a little down time,
we can begin to prepare to “ring the school bells” and once again open the school doors for next year. We are
blessed with an amazing partnership with you - we have missed you dearly and look forward to the new school
year with you!

2019-20 LECAF Ezekiel Award Recipient
The recipient of The Ezekiel Award for effective, Christian witness and excellence in teaching for the 2019-2020 school
year is Mr. Brent Holtcamp who teaches art classes at the ECA Secondary campus. Mr. Holtcamp received his Bachelor
of Arts in K-12 Education from the University of Southern Colorado (now Colorado State University–Pueblo) and has
been involved in the ministry of ECA since 1978. In earlier years, he taught music at ECA and currently plays upright
bass in the Village Seven Presbyterian Church orchestra.
Mr. Holtcamp currently teaches Junior High Art; Art I, II, III; and Studio Art and is excited to see the potential for
glorifying God through our students and the school. He hopes “to open his students’ eyes to this great and exciting
world by looking, seeing, and doing with a positive curiosity the wonders God our Creator has set before us.”
In his nomination package, Mr. Holtcamp was noted as “caring passionately about his students and about his subject;”
“Brent is also an advocate for students and staff who might be hurting or need a helping hand;” and, “Brent is a gifted
art teacher. He has years of experience which serves him well when he helps students understand the medium they are
working.” One parent said, “I have seen firsthand how well he loves his students, cares for his fellow staff members,
and encourages all he comes in contact with. Mr. Holtcamp is a fabulous teacher.”

We congratulate and thank our new Executive Council: Cayleigh Morton, Student Body President; Roxie Dynes, Vice
President; and Micah Elpers, Treasurer! Our Class Officers will be announced as soon as the elections are completed.
9th Annual Fall Student & Staff Retreat:
Planning continues for this year’s Fall Retreat on Friday, August 28, at Camp Elim, and we look forward with anticipation
to God’s blessings on this time of fellowship and spiritual growth!

Mrs. Marie Burley, one of our longtime teachers, has decided to retire this year. Mrs. Burley’s impact on
the lives of ECA children has spanned almost a quarter of a century, beginning in 1996 as a 6th Grade
teacher at our Elementary campus and since 2002 teaching our upper-level Literature and French classes
at the Secondary campus. Whether in her classroom, serving as Class Advisor for many years, taking her
French students to discover France, teaching them to bake fabulous croissants every winter, leading her students in
service at Compassion International or packing containers for Operation Christmas Child, sharing her enthusiasm with
them at her annual English tea, or in countless other ways, Mrs. Burley’s constant commitment to academic excellence
and love for her students has blessed generations of students and parents. Mrs. Burley will be deeply missed, and we
wish her God’s richest blessings as she takes more time to be with and care for her family and grandchildren.
Cards and notes may be dropped off at the Secondary office.

Black Forest League HS Girls’ Basketball Varsity won their last regular-season game, vs. Pikes Peak Christian, and
headed to the District Tournament seeded #4 and 10-9. Our Lady Eagles handily beat #9-seed Cripple Creek-Victor in
Round 1 and lost a heartbreaker to #5-seed Edison 47-50 in the Quarterfinals. Congratulations to Amy Antes, Madison
Castro, Kailey DeRuiter, Hadassah Derosier, Micah Elpers, Ella Kim, Lily Mann, Elana Sutton, Darcey Wingett, JV
Shea Atkins, Myah DeJong, Emily Mann, Emily Minot, Keira Morton, and Elana Sutton, and Thank You to Coach
Bruce Beers, JV Coach Sarah Kenney, Assistant Liz Beers, and our families, fans, and volunteers for a great season!
Black Forest League HS Boys’ Basketball From Coach Bob Wingett. . .Our Varsity Eagles were at the State
Tournament and 19-4 when the season was cancelled, and the boys had lost the Quarterfinal to Mile High
Academy, playing a really good game but unable to overcome their opponents’ 6’8”,6’4”, and 6’4” height.
Jason Holt was named 1st Team All-State and Sam Mote 2nd Team All-State. JV finished 16-3, undefeated in
League play and losing only one 2A or 1A game. These young men worked so very hard and improved dramatically over
the course of last summer and the season. Jonathan Bunker, Noah Coddington, Michael Mann, Sam Ross, RJ Wagner,
and Vito Yacovoni led on and off the floor, and we are all excited to see where these boys take the program over the next
few seasons. It was an honor to work with these boys and their families. They represented ECA with class, dignity,
and hard work, and I can’t tell you how many coaches and fans complimented our boys on the way they played.
Congratulations also to Judah Alexander, Jonah Aragon, David Bunker, Landon Bunker, Garrison Counts, Andrew
DeRuiter, Jared Guest, Max Hatcher, Cooper Hill, Michael Kim, Tyson Rawlings, and Josiah Wilson; and Thank You

Black Forest League Baseball A buzz was in the air as Andrew Bronson, Jonathan Bunker, Landon Bunker, Noah

Andrew Kwon, Ian Patterson, Tyson Rawlinggs, James Singleton, Jordan Taylor, Justin West, Vito Yacovoni, Coach
Bob DeRuiter, and Assistants Mark Brunson and Kiki Isham eagerly awaited their kick-off on March 17 vs. Denver
Christian. With CHSAA pre-season polls ranking the Eagles 6th in 1A, there was hope this would be our third consecutive
season to advance as one of the State’s final eight teams at season’s end. The promise of a strong season only deepened the
disappointment for everyone, but we rest in the knowledge that God is faithful and His plan is perfect and good.
Tri-Peaks League Girls’ HS Soccer Our Lady Eagles, Coach Bob Wingett, and Assistants Cambria Root, Kalyn
Phelps, and Tessa Merritt were looking forward to a busy kick-off week vs. Front Range Christian, James Irwin, and
Delores Huerta. Despite the disappointment felt by us all, we trust God will richly bless the efforts of Amy Antes, Taylor
Day, Hadassah Derosier, Kimber Devine, Roxie Dynes, Micah Elpers, Ellen Hood, Sydney Hood, Ella Kim, Emily

they invested in the season and trust that God will bless their efforts in His perfect plan for each of them!
