Situated in an area of the Adelaide Hills that was littered with goldmines in the 1800s, the Bird in Hand winery
was purchased and planted in 1997 by Andrew Nugent, current Executive Director. Andrew has kept the close
historical links alive both in the naming of the winery and their wine ranges; Two in the Bush and Nest Egg were
the names of mineshafts in the Bird in Hand goldmine. Bird in Hand have 23 hectares under vine in Woodside
and 5 ha in Clare, from which they produce classic examples of cool climate Chardonnay and Shiraz.

2000s. They are still a family-owned and -managed winery, producing wines with regional distinction and

The Lloyd family have been making wines in McLaren Vale since 1968; Mark Lloyd has now handed over
the winemaking reins to his son, Duncan. Though well known for introducing to Australia a range of varietals
                             with a distinctly Italian emphasis, Coriole’s bedrock is in the strength of its outstanding Shiraz plantings;
indeed the Lloyd Reserve Shiraz is one of McLaren Vale’s greatest. The estate has started the process of
organic certification, having farmed organically for many years.

GOLDEN AMRITA, Barossa Valley
Golden Amrita, owned by the Liu family, is an ancient Indian word meaning ‘Nectar of the Gods’. The
single estate 15 ha vineyard, planted solely with Shiraz in 1998, lies within the Greenock sub region of the
Barossa Valley and is perfectly suited to making quality, rich, full flavoured Shiraz. The vineyard is expertly
managed by the sixth generation family of Barossa vignerons, the Kalleske family. Shawn Kalleske took over
winemaking for the 2019 vintage, with the world renowned Kym Milne MW on board as a consultant.

The Hahn family first purchased land in the Siegersdorf-Dorrien area, north of Tanuda in 1845. The first
vines were planted on the property in 1914 by Hermann Hahn (3rd generation). By the 1970s, the property
was fully planted with vines. In 1997, sixth generation James and Jackie Hahn decided to produce their own
range of red wines and teamed up with Barossa winemaker, Rolf Binder to create the JJ Hahn label.

or Larry ‘McPinot’ as he is affectionately known, quietly crafts some of New Zealand’s most impressive
wines. Pinot Noir is the grape he is most famous for, and his Insight Series of single vineyard expressions
speak volumes for the unique Martinborough terroir. Not wishing to be in any way pigeonholed, he also
produces world class Chardonnay and Pinot Gris!

Some of Darling Cellars’ vineyards enjoy the coolness of the Darling Hills, just three miles from the roaring
Atlantic, while others bask in sun in the flatter hinterland. Old bush vines and vast swathes of terroir lend
diversity to the varietals and styles created here. Darling Cellar’s Old Bush Vine Chenin Blanc and Cinsaut

from vines that are thirty five years and older.

The concept of Ernie Els Wines was born out of friendship between Ernie Els and Jean Engelbrecht back in
1999. The pair combined Jean’s knowledge of the world wine markets with Ernie’s impeccable worldwide
acclaim and reputation, to full effect. Winemaker Louis Strydom often describes his Stellenbosch harvest as the
one chance he gets every year to produce something truly memorable. With a raft of awards and ratings behind
him, he has remained as consistent and focused as the estate’s namesake himself.

Kanonkop is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, from where it
produces award-winning wines. A fourth generation family estate, it was originally purchased by JW Sauer
(a cabinet member in the parliament of the Union of South Africa) and has been in the family ever since.
Kanonkop is famed for its red wines, particularly Pinotage, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and
Cabernet Franc. A blend of these three, 2015 Paul Sauer was the first South African wine to be awarded

Bijou, feminine, pure and expressive; Catherine Marshall is a wonderful winemaker in the cool climes of
Elgin, and her wines are all of these things. There is a natural, unforced feel in her wines, the stars of
which are most certainly her exceptional Pinot Noirs. Terroir-led and brimming with delicate, refreshing fruit

Few estates in the Cape can revel in as much history or prestige as that of Rust en Vrede – for over 300
years it has stood peacefully amongst the vineyards of Stellenbosch. Producing only red wines, the estate
focuses on Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Famously, Nelson Mandela selected Rust en Vrede to be
poured at his Nobel Peace Prize dinner in 1994. See also Donkiesbaai, p20; Guardian Peak, p22, and
