Due to COVID-19 and the Shelter In Place order issued by the Berkeley Health Officer, BERKELEY SENIOR CENTERS REMAIN CLOSED for the safety of our patrons. For the latest news about the COVID-19 response in Berkeley, go to: https://www.cityofberkeley.info/covid-19/ In the United States, the month of May each year is celebrated as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. In the mid 1970s, a nationwide advocacy campaign was launched to obtain Congressional Resolution to designate one week in May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Week. This concept originated from Jeanie F. Jew, a staff person on Capital Hill at the time and a board member of the Organization of Chinese Americans. This annual celebration came about in 1978 when President Jimmy Carter signed into law a Joint Resolution of the Congress of the United States designating the week of May 4 - 11th for the celebration of Asian and Pacific Islanders culture and heritage. It took more than ten year of advocacy before the celebration was extended to include the entire month of May. On May 7, 1990, President George W. Bush signed into law proclaiming Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. Celebrate, honor, and participate in the rich traditions of our diverse Asian community! Activi- ties are happening throughout the month, including those listed below. As we get older we are more prone to dehydration because our thirst reflex does not work as well. We don’t catch the signs of thirst in a timely way because our blood vessels are less flexible. That means our brains don’t realize we’re in need of hydration. Even mild dehydration can make us weak and confused, cause urinary tract infections, low blood pressure, and can lead to severe health risks like heat stroke. Dehydration is a primary cause of falling among older adults. Also, people with dementia and Alzheimer’s may forget they need to drink, which can cause a major health issue. How you can ensure you are getting enough fluids: Drink something with every meal, snack or pill you have. When you feel thirsty, don’t wait; this is your body’s signal that it needs water. Eat foods with high moisture content like fruits or vegetables. Generally, 6 – 8 glasses of fluids per day are appropriate (unless medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, rule out this amount). Monitor urine output. If your urine is yellow or has a strong smell, you likely need to drink more! Drink frequently during the day, rather than drinking large amounts at one time. Keep glasses of water and/or a water pitcher available throughout the day wherever you are (in bed, on the patio, in a favorite seating area in the house). Remember, if you are on diuretics (“water pill”), you need to drink MORE fluids and are at higher risk of dehydration. What are good drink choices? Water is your best choice for drinking, whether plain, carbonated, or with added flavors. We in the East Bay have access to excellent water, so bottled water is unnecessary. Coffee and tea will actually count towards your fluid needs, despite the fact that they have caffeine. Choose these drinks most often: Water! – Add a slice or two of any citrus, berries, or cucumber to your water for great flavor and no calories. Fresh mint and rosemary can add some interest, too. Non-fat or low-fat milk 100% fruit juice (limit to ½ cup). Or add a little juice to flavor plain water. Unsweetened tea Diet soda (occasionally) Search www.ChooseMyPlate.gov for more “better beverage” ideas Page 6 The Nugget, May 2021
