People For the American Way People For the American Way is a national organization dedicated to defending constitutional and civil rights and promoting the democratic values of citizen participation, freedom of expression, freedom of religion, and respect for diversity. Mission People For the American Way works to build a democratic society that implements the ideals of freedom, equality, opportunity, and justice for all. People For the American Way encourages civic participation, defends fundamental rights, and fights to dismantle systemic barriers to equitable opportunity. People For the American Way fights against right-wing extremism and the injustice it fosters. Vision and History People For the American Way Foundation was founded in 1981 by legendary television and film producer Norman Lear, the late Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, and a group of business, civic, religious, and civil rights leaders who were disturbed by the divisive rhetoric of newly politicized televangelists. Advocacy affiliate People For the American Way was founded soon after. People For the American Way is dedicated to making the promise of America real for every American. Their vision of the American Way is a vibrantly diverse society in which the laws are just and applied equitably; where everyone has the freedom, opportunity, and access to pursue their dreams; and where all people are encouraged to participate in civic and political life. People For the American Way’s America acknowledges its history, respects differences and dissent, combats hatred and bigotry, nurtures creativity, and seeks justice and equity for all. People for Priorities From fighting for a democracy that works for everyone to challenging attacks on equal rights, all PFAW campaigns are aimed at making strides toward a country where the promise of America is real for all Americans. Democracy The right to vote is under attack like we have never seen before as evidenced by the nearly 400 voter suppression bills introduced in 48 states since the 2020 elections. If left unaddressed, millions of Americans– especially women and people of color – are at risk of having their voices silenced in our democracy. In FY 22, we will engage our network of 3,000 Black faith leaders to mobilize Black voters in key communities targeted by voter suppression efforts. Through our African American Religious Affairs Network, we will work to ensure Black voters are engaged, registered and ready to vote in every election – local, state, and federal. As part of our long-term campaign to transform the electorate in South Carolina and Alabama, in FY 22, we will expand our Souls to the Polls program to engage our network of Black faith leaders and community activists to host voter registration, education and mobilization activities to increase early voter and election day turnout among Black voters. We will also rally voters of faith and arm them with the information needed to defend the Black vote and make informed political decisions. he Biden-Harris administration is committed to nominating outstanding women of color to positions in the executive branch and federal judiciary, and the Far Right is pushing back. #HerFightOurFight is there to champion and support these women, who will be the ones who make real change happen for the American people. Public Safety Millions of people across the country have taken to the streets calling for comprehensive and transformative reform to our system of public safety. Several cities and counties have responded to these calls for action and passed new measures seeking to remove school resource officers from school districts; creating an all-traffic force; and reforming use of force and accountability within police departments. However, there is still a lack of truly transformative reform to our system of public safety. Through our reimagining public safety campaign, we have brought together electeds, Black Lives Matter activists, Black faith leaders, and legal and policy experts to identify the best recommendations to transform public safety. We have also designed a strategy that employs our relationships with local electeds and our expertise with community organizing and strategic communications to make transformative change. We believe we can transform public safety from the bottom up in the next decade. Search conducted by Development Resources, inc. www.driconsulting.com 3
People for Priorities (cont.) Elections People For has made transforming the American South an organizational priority and designed a metropolitan focused voter mobilization strategy for key target states. With first generation immigrants our key program is Latinos Vote, which has been extremely successful. Since 2012, Latinos Vote has played a central role in critical races nationwide. In Georgia, we were the first to run Spanish language political ads on television during the 2014 cycle and have continued to invest in the state since. In the 2020 general election, our efforts across 12 states resulted in Latino voter turnout that outpaced the general population by 17 percent. We also played a critical role with Black voters in 2020. We recognized that Republicans were strategically targeting Black male voters, so we stepped up our efforts and leveraged our expertise with strategic paid and earned media to mobilize and persuade Black voters. Our work with Black and Latino voters in 2020 was so successful, we were recognized by Stacey Abrams as one of the top organizations that helped flip Georgia. Leadership Program As an organization, People For The American Way Foundation is committed to empowering young leaders to lead authentically and courageously in their communities. Launched in 2005, our Young Elected Officials (YEO) Network has become the premier training program and peer support network for young people seeking to advance social justice in their communities. Since its inception, the Network has provided peer support, training and mentorship for young leaders (under the age of 35) in office, thinking about running for office, or considering working on a campaign or other avenues related to political action. Today, the Network includes over 1,300 members from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Prominent members and alumni include Pete Buttigieg, Rashida Tlaib, Julian Castro, Stacey Abrams, and Ilhan Omar. The network is also intentionally diverse, intersectional, and focused on building power in underserved local and state jurisdictions. Nominations People For has played a major role in nominations, including every SCOTUS fight since the early 1980s.. In 2009, we ran ads in support of Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who came under relentless attack by right-wing groups. Justice Sotomayor has become an essential voice of dissent protecting Americans from the Court’s right-wing, pro-corporate majority. Over the past 4 years, we have documented the harm caused by narrow- minded Far Right judges and worked to raise awareness of the importance of judicial nominations in the presidential election and in key Senate races—including the all-important Senate runoffs in Georgia. This movement building has culminated in President Biden’s commitment to naming the first African American woman to the Supreme Court and to appointing more women and more people of color to lower courts – providing a critical opportunity to increase the diversity of representation on the courts, particularly the Supreme Court.
