Why we do this ? There are 325.000 (circa) people living in Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taf which are amongst the most deprived areas in Wales impacting on mental health and wellbeing. Using Welsh Health Survey data it is suggested that over 18,000 people in Cwm Taf may be receiving treatment for depression or anxiety at one point in time. Cwm Taf residents received 407,124 antidepressant prescriptions in the year to March 2011 (an increase of 9.85% over the previous year and 20.97% increase from 2008). The average cost of a prescription item in 2010 was £4.97, excluding dispensing costs. The total cost for 2010/11 was £2.02 million, representing 3% of the total programme budget for mental health. The largest proportion by far of primary care prescribing on mental health drugs is for antidepressants. All the above facts are taken from Cwm Taf Community “Mental Health Strategic Framework” 2011 to 2016 (document, pages9-10) 8
Recovery College Principles Recovery is a personal journey of discovery. ( Repper & Perkins, 2012) It involves: making sense of, and finding meaning in, what has happened becoming an expert in your own self-care building a new sense of self and purpose in life discovering your own resourcefulness and possibilities and using these, and the resources available to you To pursue your aspirations and goals The challenge for mental health services is to assist people in this journey. (Shepherd, Boardmam & Slade, 2008) This requires us to move beyond a narrow focus on symptom reduction to helping people to rebuild lives that they find satisfying, meaningful and valued. (Repper & Perkins, 2003; Perkins, 2012; Perkins & Slade, 2012) Together for Mental Health A 10-year strategy for improving the lives of people using mental health services, their carers and their families. At the heart of the Strategy is the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010, which places legal duties on Health Boards and Local Authorities to improve support for people with mental ill-health. 9

Available to individuals who experience mental health or emotional wellbeing needs throughout the local authority areas of Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taf. “Building a new sense of self and purpose in life...” Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a form of talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave. CBT cannot remove your problems, but it can help you deal with them in a more positive way. It is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and feelings can trap you in a vicious cycle. Our CBT based courses aim to help you crack this cycle by breaking down overwhelming problems into smaller parts and showing you how to change these negative patterns to improve the way you feel.
