Secretary Hello Tucson HOG! Wow, we made it to December!! I know this year has been an unusual one but rather than focus on anything negative I’d like to count my blessings. This year I was honored to serve as your secretary for the second year and although I didn’t get to do as much as last year, I was happy for the opportunity. I feel blessed to know so many wonderful HOG members and I’ve really missed those of you I had a chance to get close to in the past couple of years. Thank you all for supporting the second annual backpack drive and donating to a great cause. There is no way it would have been possible without your donations and without our Director Ramona encouraging me to share my idea and supporting me every step of the way. Thank you for everything Ramona! This year I was promoted at my place of employment and my eldest daughter blessed me with an amazing little grandson that I adore. For these reasons I can’t say this year was a bad one and I invite you all to look at the brighter side of things. Don’t focus on the bad; don’t allow the things around you ruin your day. Instead let us spread cheer like wildfire! Merry Christmas to you all, Jessica aka Buns Treasurer Happy holidays and happy New year to all my HOG friends and family. I hope this newsletter finds everybody in good spirits and in good health. Cooler weather is upon us finally great time to get out there and ride. Hope to see you all out there, have a wonderful new year. Ray 4

January will bring the HOG Roundup in Yuma and I look forward to that, hope you will be there. I will be trying to figure out what LOH will be able to accomplish next year, so if you have any ideas, please let me know. IF YOU ARE A MEMBER OF NATIONAL/TUCSON HOG, and you are FEMALE YOU ARE A MEMBER OF LOH AS WELL. If you have not signed up for the National LOH, see what you can do about getting your pin, but you don't have to have it to join in any of the activities/socials. Hope to see you soon! :) Cheryl "Woodstock" LOH OFFICER 2020/2021 Activities Hello Tucson HOG! The Holidays are upon us! Editor Hello Tucson H.O.G. Well what a year it has been. I was hoping for things to end on a positive note but well, 2020 happens. I was going to work the third stop for the SALEF poker run and was involved in an accident. Glad I was not on the bike. I will know in a couple of days if the Jeep is totaled or not. Thankfully I was not injured and I had friends, Renee and Frances, to come out and help. On one positive note, I am down 47 pounds! I have been walking in the pool, now that they are open again, and riding my bicycle as much as I can. It’s hard work, but so worth it. I would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Kwanzza, Happy Holidays or whatever you choose to celebrate! Remember to be kind. Remember we can all use some kindness this year. Sandy We only regret the rides we don’t take. Historian TUCSON HOG - HISTORIAN REPORT December 2020 Happy Holidays to all. We will all be glad when this year comes to an end and hopefully things can return to somewhat normal when we welcome in 2021. Tucson Hog held its first general membership meeting since February in THD's parking lot on Saturday, November 14th. Since the dealership is closed on Sundays, we now hold the meetings on Saturdays. However, another meeting won't be held until sometime next year. Hog members gathered in the parking lot and the weather was great. Not a lot to report on, but it was nice to see some faces we haven't seen in a while, plus some new members. 6
Two $50 gift cards were passed out, these were for those that have been on a ride recently. There were also the two $100 gift cards that the dealership gave. Four lucky members got to go shopping. For the second time, our Activities Director Mike (DJ) Bradford put on a Tucson Hog movie night in the parking lot. This time we watched the classic "Easy Rider" starring Peter Fonda. There wasn't a whole lot of good acting, no script and no plot. But a few members commented on how when that movie first came out in the early 70's how everyone raved how great it was. The sound system & clarity of the movie was great. Plus, a cartoon before the movie. Due to the cold weather coming, the next movie night will be next spring. There have been some rides but the only road captain to send me info was our Assistant Director, T- Bit. Thanks Tim for the info. For those who lead a ride please send me the info to me at tueboru@aol.com (my personal email) since we will no longer have the Tucson Hog site. On 11-7-20, there was a New Members ride. Six bikes with 6 riders went 30 miles to have breakfast at Saguaro Corners. Harriet White was the LRC with Jim sweeping. It was called the New Member's Ride however there were no new members on the ride. The other ride was the next day, Sunday, November 8th, in memory of Eric "Coach" Hartenstein, aka Dutch Hannigan. Eighteen riders on 16 bikes rode thru Sierra Vista to Naco. After a brief stop we continued on to lunch in Tombstone. Very heavy winds made for a tough ride. LRC's were Sharon & Jim with Terry "Broom" Darby sweeping. Speaking of Terry "Broom" Darby, congratulations on being 2021's Lead Road Captain (LRC). No more sweeping broom, your headed to the top of the rides! Once again, have a safe, happy holiday season and keep on riding. Until next year....... Tom aka Detroit Membership HELLO Tucson HOG Can't believe the year has passed and we are so close to Christmas and a brand new year. Although this year we will not be able to celebrate together like we normally do, remember each other and think of the fun times we have had together throughout the years. I hope you all have an amazing holiday season with your loved ones and that you make it special despite the differences. It has been a pleasure and I hope you all welcome the New Year in good health and happiness. From my family to yours, God Bless you all! Love Maggie 7
Safety Hello Tucson HOG members! Welcome to December and the end of a long strange year. We had our first HOG group meeting in November and was good to see everyone that attended. Felt really good to spend some time with HOG friends and get caught up on what’s new. Our future HOG activities and rides are being planned out with our new normal of social distancing, spacing out at meals and practicing the CDC guidelines to keep us all safe and healthy. Terry Darby is our new Head Road captain for 2021 (Congratulations!!) and our Road Captain group is working to plan new rides for 2021. If you have an idea for a ride that you would like to take please contact any of the road captains and we will work with you to get it on the calendar. As always please check your bike condition before going out on any rides. Cooler weather means that tire pressures drop significantly and can change 8-10 PSI with just a 20 degree change in temperature. With daylight getting shorter we can find ourselves riding in the evening darkness and we need to make sure all of our lights are operating properly. Check them out regularly to make sure! Ride safe until we meet again!! Ron Peterson Safety officer / Road Captain 2020 Webmaster Hello HOG friends, Here it is the end of 2020. What a trek, eh? I’m so glad that many of us have been able to get together finally what with movie nights and our outdoor meeting last Saturday. I do appreciate seeing you all. So, this is my last article as a webmaster because of the new changes in progress for our website. However, you haven’t seen the last of me, because now I’ll get to be your editor. I’m brushing up on my spelling lessons now and hope that I’ll be able to dot all the I’s and cross the t’s, so to speak. 8
I hope that all of you are weathering any storms that 2020 brought your way, including … nevermind … just EVERYTHING! I hope to see you all soon and in great numbers. This day aims to recognize his contributions to the poor and his reputation for bringing gifts to those in need. Saint Nicholas of Myra was born in the 4th century. He became well known for his charitable nature and actions and would later become the inspiration for the jolly Santa Clause. Saint Nicholas Day is observed annually on December 6th. December 7: Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day seeks to honor the victims of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, an American Naval Station. The attack is often cited as the catalyst for American involvement in the Second World War, given that President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan the following day. 18
At 8AM on December 7th, 1941, without prior warning, the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service attacked a Naval Station at Pearl Harbor, located on Oahu, Hawaii. The base was attacked by 353 Japanese fighter planes. In total, 2,403 people perished, another 1,178 were injured, four U.S. Navy battleships were sunk and 188 aircrafts were destroyed. The aim of the attack was to immobilize the U.S. Pacific Fleet, which would allow Japan to advance into Malaya and Dutch East Indies. On August 23, 1994, the United States Congress passed Public Law 103-308 to designate December 7 of each year as the National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. December 10: Chanukah (Hebrew: noun) is an eight day Jewish festival, also known as the festival of lights. On each day a Menorah (an eight branched candelabra) is lit with an ascending number of candles to match the day. The reason for Chanukah is based on the story of the Maccabees battle with the Greeks. It is told that one pure bottle of olive oil lasted for eight days in the Holy Temple. It should have lasted only for the first day. December 15: Bill of Rights Day celebrates the signing of the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution. The Amendments protect rights such as freedom of speech, protest, and guarantees equal protection under the law. It was signed on December 15, 1791 and was written by James Madison. In November 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared December 15th as Bill of Rights Day. December 21: The Winter Solstice marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year as the Northern Hemisphere is angled the farthest away from the Sun on this day. The Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere happens every year around December 21 or 22. December 25: Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. For modern Christians it also starts a 12-day Christmas season that begins on December 25th and ends on January 5th. Churches celebrate Christmas with services on Christmas Eve and often midnight masses. While the holiday is religious in origin, many cultures, even those without Christian ideologies, celebrate this holiday. This celebration often centers around Santa Claus, a mythical figure dressed in a red suit, based on Saint Nicholas. Tradition has it that on Christmas morning, Santa brings gifts for children who have been good and coal for those who have been naughty. December 26: Boxing Day is a holiday that serves to remember the old practice of giving boxes on the day after Christmas. The practice of Boxing Day was first mentioned in English Member of Parliament Samuel Pepys’ diary entry from December 19th 1663, when he referred to “giving something to the boy’s box against Christmas”. The day after Christmas was traditionally a time when servants and tradesman would receive gifts from their employers, clients or masters. These Christmas boxes of food, money or presents served to thank the workers for the years of service. In the past, servants would be given the day off – having worked Christmas Day – to visit their families, taking with them the boxes from their masters. December 26: Kwanzaa is an African-American and Pan-African celebration of family, community and culture. Kwanzaa, a week-long cultural festival from the 26th of December to the 1st of January that climaxes in feasts and gift giving, was initially established to unite African-Americans with their African roots and heritage. Nguzo Saba, the seven principles that guide the holiday, is central to Kwanzaa as a different principle is emphasized every day during the celebration. Celebrants often dress in traditional Pan-African clothing and decorate their homes in African artwork. Since Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday, not a religious one; it can be celebrated by Africans from all religious backgrounds. 19
