17 Year Old During the first virtual BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition this year, Gregory Tarr won the top prize at the age of 17. From County The sixth year student from Bandon Grammar School in Co. Cork impressed the jury with his project entitled “Towards detecting Cork Wins BT state-of-the-art deepfakes”. Young Scientist The project uses an intricate Artificial Intelligence software program developed by Gregory, which can efficiently detect Top Award deepfake media with ‘state-of-the-art accuracy’. Its unique selling point is the speed and efficiency that surpasses any existing models without impacting accuracy. Such improvements were made possible by over 150,000 lines of code that Gregory developed. The potential for this tool has real life implications, and could be deployed to filter out deepfake media; with the aim to make the internet a more reliable and safer place. Problems With In 2019, Google announced its Privacy Sandbox, a project to create an eco system on the internet that is equally beneficial for all users.
