DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING TUESDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2020 ATTACHMENT 1 OF 2 TO ITEM DV20.147 LAKE MONGER GRANT APPLICATION
1 Lake Monger Community Garden Inc. Reg no A1017389Y Janine Roets Sustainability Officer Town of Cambridge WA 30th October 2020 REQUEST FOR CHANGE TO ALLOCATION OF FUNDING IN CURRENT GRANT APLICATION Hi Janine Please can you attach this to our grant application and put this request to the Council for consideration. After clarification with Town members about the actual area we can currently use for our community garden and discussion with our committee members about the necessary steps to expand into our proposed stage 2 we have decided not to proceed at this point in time to apply to expand the community garden. The main reason for expansion was to allow more members of the wider community to have access to a community bed in our garden as we are currently full to capacity. We have so many exciting plans that we plan to undertake for and with the wider community once we have more space and more members but they will all have to be put on hold for the time being. We will begin fresh negotiations mid-2021 to expand but plan to have a break now and focus the summer months on updating some areas of the existing garden. We would still like to apply for the grant of $3000 to be used in making our existing area a more serviceable space for the community. With the money granted we plan to do as follows: Prioritised Items Approx. Cost Installation of a sign along the fence making it clear we are a $800 community garden for the whole community to enjoy and benefit from, as so many people think that we belong to the school. Remove the paved path area as its not safe enough for the elderly $400 or those with a disability and replace it with crushed limestone
2 which will also add to a more natural setting plus make it wheelchair accessible. Overhaul the reticulation drip system which currently does not $1000 provide adequate water to most of the beds. Plus provide retic to the new beds. If we can get this problem sorted it will reduce the need to hand water as much. Purchase and install 2 more tall garden beds which will be offered $700 to the Town of Cambridge Senior Citizens group and 4 shorter beds for new members. Purchase a load of organic soil mix plus crushed mineral rock and $600 some organic manure for the new beds and also to top up the older beds. Have some signs made around the garden about the various $500 areas, herb beds etc. Hopefully as a project with the local men’s shed or school or another community group. Purchase of materials and paint up to required amount. Replace some plants along the fence line that have been stolen. $100 Install some wooden seating around some of the communal Not yet known community beds for anyone who wants or needs to sit for a while. This will be our only area for seating at this stage as we will probably need to sacrifice the current area for more bed space. Provide a security camera to the garden. The school does have Not yet known one on a gate nearby, perhaps with negotiations with the school board we can install one alongside theirs allowing us a view of the garden in the evening. It could also be a benefit to the school. If not allowed by the school, we will consider a solar powered one as we have no access to power on the site or we may be able to run an underground cable from the nearby Town toilet block if the town approves. Total Cost $4100 As you can see by this list we have gone well over the $3000 requested. We will also be using our very limited current funds plus will also be relying heavily on donated items or labour. We have received donations from Bunnings in the past and we will approach the men’s shed to help with work around the garden. Our donated labour hours are approximately $2000 at two hours a week over the next six months at the rate of $41.75 for voluntary labour but it can be much more. Thank you all for considering this request. Kind regards Sonya Arcidiacono Co-ordinator Lake Monger Community Garden
