WELCOME TO DST Welcome to Desert Stages Theatre, and thank you for joining us at this performance of A CHORUS LINE! You may already be aware that A CHORUS LINE was originally scheduled to run at DST in May, 2020. Auditions had been held, and the actors were ready to begin the rehearsal process. Unfortunately, circumstances beyond our control caused that production to be postponed. Many of the performers featured in this show have not been on stage for more than a year. Since June, this talented and passionate group of young people has worked very hard to bring you DST's version of this benchmark musical. We are confident that you will be impressed and delighted with their performances. Many thanks to Lisa Barton Figueroa, Jenni Hall, and Jenn Adams for guiding them through the process. We continue our COVID-19 safety protocols to keep you and our actors safe. In return, we ask that you kindly wear your mask the entire time you are in the theatre. If you wish to meet with your friends or cast members after the show, please arrange to do so in the food court area of the shopping mall so the lobby doesn't get congested. Thank you in advance for your cooperation! Thank you again for your support of live the- atre and for your attendance at this perfor- mance of A CHORUS LINE. Whether you are seeing your 100th show or your first at DST, you are a valued member of the Desert Stages Theatre community, and we appre- ciate you more than you could ever know! Ellen Versen Executive Director
DIRECTOR'S LETTER I was asked to direct A Chorus Line in the summer of 2019, and it's surreal seeing it FINALLY on stage in the summer of 2021. It seems appropri- ate to have the first large scale musical since COVID shut us down to be about theatre itself. A Chorus Line opened on Broadway in 1975, and if we are being honest, very little has changed about the audition callback process. The excite- ment, anxiety, desperation, hope are all the same. I had a professor in college once tell me that Shakespeare is relatable because of his depic- tion of human emotion and circumstance. Anyone who has ever audi- tioned for a show, be it musical or otherwise, can tell you "I Hope I Get It" is most definitely an inner monologue they have all felt. At callbacks I told the actors, close their eyes, take a breath, and think about all of the things they were feeling right then. The excitement, the anticipation, the fear, they were quite literally doing character work for the characters they were about to audition for. All of them were, at that very moment, feeling pieces of the story we are about to tell. The real- ity is, whether you have auditioned for 500 productions, or this is a first audition, we all, including the directing team, has wondered many of the thoughts sung throughout this show. Time may change, music may change, fashion may change, but auditions and the human emotion of this musical is forever. The group of actors you are about to see are truly some of the hardest workers I have ever worked with. With extra precautions, testing, masks, distance, zoom, etc. they have found a way to preserve and come to- gether to depict a story of the very art they care so much about! The opening song closes by saying, "Oh god, I need this show." I didn't know how true that statement was until I was surrounded by this cast and crew. Lisa Barton-Figueroa Director, A Chorus Line
