1. The Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz

Our Mission
We provide our students with an education, which promotes intellectual, physical and emotional balance.
We work to create a thriving international school community where young people from the Engadine, and
from around the world, can build the foundations for a fulfilling and purposeful life.

Inspired by the traditions of “The Spirit of Zuoz”, our students forge bonds of friendship which last a
lifetime and they develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as global citizens in a changing
world.

2. The International Baccalaureate

IB Mission Statement
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who
help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end, the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop
challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong
learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

3. The IB learner profile

The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common
humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.
IB learners strive to be:

Inquirers They develop their natural curiosity. They acquire the skills necessary to conduct
inquiry and research and show independence in learning.

Knowledgeable They explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance,
acquiring in-depth knowledge and developing understanding across a broad and
                       balanced range of disciplines.

Thinkers They take the initiative in applying thinking skills, both critically and creatively, to
recognize and approach complex problems and are able to make reasoned, ethical
                       decisions.

Communicators They understand and express ideas and information confidently, creatively and in
more than one language using a variety of modes of communication. They work
effectively and willingly in collaboration with others.

Principled They act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and
respect. They take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that
                       accompany them.

Open-minded They understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are
open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and
communities. They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of
view, and are willing to grow from the experience.

Caring They show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of
others. They have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive
difference to the lives of others and to the environment.

Risk-takers They approach unfamiliar situations and
                       uncertainty with courage and forethought,
and have the independence of spirit to
explore new roles, ideas and strategies.
They are brave and articulate in defending
                       their beliefs.

Balanced They understand the importance of
                       intellectual, physical and emotional
balance to achieve personal well-being for
                       themselves and others.

Reflective They consider their own learning and
experience. They are able to assess and
                       understand their strengths and limitations
in order to support their learning and
                       personal development.
                                                                                  Graphic: www.ibo.org

4. What is the Career-Related Programme?

The IB Career-Related Programme (CP) is for students,
age 16–19 years, who wish to focus on career-related
learning in the last two years of study at the Lyceum
                                                      Alpinum.

The foundation for this course began in 2006 and
evolved into the current IB CP in 2014. The CP
combines the highly regarded and academically
challenging courses from the IB Diploma Programme
(DP) with practical, real-world approaches to

                                                      learning.

The International Baccalaureate Careers-Related Programme (IBCP) framework is built around three
elements that are interconnected:

   • A core programme of study (see details on next page)
   • A minimum of two Diploma Programme subjects at HL or SL
   • An approved career-related study

All of the elements of the CP help students develop their communication, personal, and academic skills
necessary to succeed in a rapidly changing world. The Careers Programme also prepares students for
university and encourages them to:

   • ask challenging questions
   • learn ‘how’ to learn
   • develop a strong sense of their own identity and culture
   • develop the ability to communicate with and understand people from other countries and cultures.

Why the CP?
Parents who want the best possible education for their children choose the IB CP because it:

       • combines academic subjects
            with professional interests
       • encourages critical thinking
            and creativity in real-world
            situations
       • helps students to effectively
            work independently and in
            collaboration with others
       • opens new perspectives and
            a sense of international-
            mindedness
       • develops greater self-
            confidence and self-
            awareness through study

                                                                    Graphic: www.wordclouds.com

What do students have to study in the CP?

Students complete four core components of the CP plus
two Diploma level subject courses.

The CP core consists of:

• Service learning,
• Personal and Professional Skills,
• Language development
• The Reflective Project.

In addition, students select a career-related study
area that draws upon all aspects of the CP
programme. The chosen career-related studies path
prepares students for higher education, an internship,
apprenticeship, or a position in a designated field of
interest.

Academics that enhance the CP
                                                                         Graphic: www.ibo.org

The academic rigour of the Career-Related Programme (CP) is built upon the high standards set by the IB's
renowned Diploma (DP) Programme courses. This blend of academic and professional study creates a
programme that is suitable both for students with a particular career interest, and for students who do not
yet have a specific career pathway in mind.

Our CP courses are assessed in accordance with rigorous international standards. Students take written
examinations at the end of their courses, which are marked by external IB examiners.

The marks awarded for each course range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). The Lyceum is committed to
testing relevant thinking skills by creating meaningful tasks that allow the student to show their
understanding of the subject - not just their memory skills. We also recognise the importance of
examination results as a passport to university and jobs. The IB CP provides a worldwide standard which
has retained its value and meaning over many years.

5. Career-Related studies – Pearson BTEC

The career-related studies element chosen by the Lyceum-Alpinum is international in outlook and aligned
with student needs focusing on study or direct employment in a vibrant international market. The career-
related studies element must satisfy IB criteria for accreditation, assessment and quality assurance.

The IB collaborates with a number of major providers of career-
related qualifications to support schools who offer the CP. After
much diligence, the Lyceum has chosen to partner with Pearson
Education for our BTEC Diploma Level 3 in Business and
Enterprise qualification. Pearson is a multi-sector organization
working in the Americas, AEM and Asia Pacific and is a popular,
challenging and fun course that focuses principally on business and
enterprise – offering students an international and entrepreneurial
                                      pathway with their studies.

6. The Core

In addition to the Pearson BTEC Diploma Level 3 course element, students must complete four core
components of the CP plus a minimum of two Diploma level subject courses. The CP core consists of:

   I. Service learning,
  II. Personal and Professional Skills,
 III. Language development
 IV. The Reflective Project.

Details of these four core elements follow on the next page.

 I. Service Learning

    • Service learning is the development and application of knowledge and skills towards meeting an
        identified and authentic community need.
    • In this research-based approach, students often undertake service initiatives related to topics
studied previously in their academic disciplines, utilizing skills, understandings, and values
        developed in these studies.

II. Personal and Professional Skills

    • Personal and professional skills is designed for students to develop attitudes, skills and strategies
to be applied to personal and professional situations and contexts now, and in the future.
    • In this course, the emphasis is on skills development for the workplace, as these are transferable
and can be applied in a range of situations.

III. Language Development

    • Language development ensures that all students have access to and are exposed to a language
programme that will assist and further their understanding of the wider world. The ability to
communicate in more than one language is essential to the IB’s concept of an international
        education.
    • Language development encourages students to improve their proficiency in a language other than
        their best language.

IV. The Reflective Project

    • The reflective project is an in-depth body of work produced over an extended period of time and
submitted towards the end of the CP.
    • Through a Reflective Project, students identify, analyze, critically discuss, and evaluate an ethical
issue arising from their career-related studies.
    • The Reflective Project is intended to promote high-level research, writing and extended
communication skills, intellectual discovery, and creativity.

7. University destinations after the CP

CP graduates are academically prepared for success at
competitive universities around the world and are ready to
combine further studies with apprenticeships, internships
or employment.

A recent study (2019) examined higher education
enrolment, destinations and persistence of all CP graduates
from the US between 2013 and 2015. The study found that
four out of five (81%) of CP graduates enrolled in university
after secondary school. Of those graduates, 79% chose four
year institutions over two-year colleges. They also tend to
major in high-earning, career-oriented fields including
engineering, business, and health sciences. Graphic: www.wordclouds.com

9. College and Career Counselling

The Lyceum Alpinum has a unique and diverse international student body. Almost all graduates each year
begin degree courses at a college or university somewhere around the world (Switzerland, Germany, Great
Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia, Holland...).

Mrs. Heather Thompson-Cavalli, our College Counsellor, works closely with Heads of Department,
teachers, academic tutors, parents and boarding house staff to help students to make the right choices
for their future. Her contact email: heather.thompson-cavalli@lyceum-alpinum.ch

10. Academic Tutors (AT)

Every IB student at the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz has an Academic Tutor who is responsible for closely
monitoring his or her academic performance and progress. Tutors meet regularly with their tutees to plan
the weeks ahead and reflect on academic achievements and/or issues and concerns arising. Through
discussion and guidance, students are helped to define their individual targets and given a clear
understanding of the School’s expectations and rules. This applies, in particular, to new students, to
whom their ATs will give the necessary guidance and support during the settling-in phase.
Academic Tutors have access to all relevant information on their tutees via the school information
management system (iSAMS). Upon request, they receive additional feedback from Heads of
Departments, individual subject teachers, boarding house staff and our student support team. Academic
Tutors are also informed about important coursework deadlines and other commitments, both academic
and extracurricular.

The Academic Tutor provides an additional link in the web of communication between students, subject
teachers, parents, and school management. Parents are invited to contact their son’s or daughter's AT by
email, should they wish to raise any particular issues or concerns. Details are available via the parental
portal of iSAMS. For more information on the CP programme, please contact:
