Foreword by Minister for Home Affairs In accordance with the Police Act 1993, it is the role of my Department, after consultation with the Chief Constable, to determine the policies, objectives and priorities of the police force in the Isle of Man. This plan is then laid before Tynwald. In a small Island such as ours, the visible presence of uniformed Police Officers plays a vital role in the community. The key to the quality of life we enjoy on the island is embedded in the relationships between its communities and its policing. The response to the recent pandemic highlighted the ability of the police to respond to our Island’s needs and continue to keep us all safe. This plan builds on the strong theme of supporting neighbourhood policing, improved outcomes for the vulnerable and diverting people from a life of crime. This means broader relationship building as the police and other agencies support each other in dealing with wide spectrum of issues; from mental health and drugs, to cyber-crime, to the policing of our borders. However, I also recognise the frustration faced with increasing social and health related issues not being addressed early enough until they spill over to become criminal justice issues. It is long recognised that prevention and treatment/support would have better outcomes for the individual and other agencies involved, and the island as a whole. I will continue to work with other Departmental Ministers to address this. I am confident in the leadership and commitment of our police that they will meet the challenges, and continue their work to keep us all safe and the Isle of Man will continue to be one of the safest places to live in the British Isles. To every officer, and support worker, I extend my sincere thanks for their part in this. Hon. Graham Cregeen, MHK Minister for Home Affairs July 2020 1
