WELCOME TO ART DECO NAPIER How will you Deco? The Napier Art Deco Festival is a celebration of the resilience and spirit of the people of hawke's bay who 90 years ago courageously rebuilt their town and their lives following the catastrophic 1931 earthquake; and of the vibrant, creative East Coast community Hawke's Bay has grown into. Over five days every February this celebration takes over the streets, the restaurants, cafés, bars, theatres, galleries, music venues, parks and homes of Hawke's Bay (and even the skies above) with over 300 events to choose from. More than 40,000 people come from all over New Zealand and the world, performers and visitors alike, to make this a summer Festival like no other. Whether you’re an avid Art Deco enthusiast, love the romance of a bygone era (and a good dress up) or simply want to kick back and have a great time with family and friends in our lively little region, exactly how you Deco is up to you. But one thing’s guaranteed, you’ll be back for more next year. PROUDLY PRESENTED BY HAWKE’S BAY AIRPORT 3
Stuart Ainslie, Board Chair, Art Deco Trust The Art Deco Trust has great pleasure in presenting the Napier Art Deco Festival programme for 2021. Early in 2020, Michael Fowler and I mused about how we might see a return to the roaring twenties little did we know that the COVID-19 pandemic would give small glimpses of the great depression! As a result the Art Deco Trust like many other businesses has had to look closely at our operation to ensure that we continue to advocate and deliver on our commitment to heritage and celebrating Art Deco culture. The Art Deco Trust‘s function is not only to create a spectacular festival, we are so much more than that. Spanning five days and involving hundreds of events with many free for all to enjoy we look forward to revealing a number of new events hosted across Hawke’s Bay centred in Napier and also including Hastings and Central Hawke’s Bay. An important partnership of the Trust is the one with Napier City Council. We thank the councillors and staff for their continued support. We are also very appreciative of the continued and generous sponsorship support of many local businesses to cover the cost of putting on the free events , not forgetting our amazing ADT staff and volunteer team. Lastly, with the events of 2020 reminding us of what a great backyard we have across Hawke’s Bay we encourage you to explore our events across the region as well as the premier Napier Art Deco Festival exploring what surely must be the best Art Deco waterfront location in the world. Keep safe and have fun! Nga Mihi Welcome from Kirsten Wise, Mayor of Napier The well-established and much loved Art Deco Festival is a wonderfully vibrant event which brings our community together. This year we are commemorating the 90th anniversary of the 1931 earthquake, from which Napier’s Art Deco heritage emerged. This was a very different event which brought our community together in response to the devastation, but also in the recovery and building up of our city again, and of its residents' lives. I proudly support the Art Deco Trust in all they do, and the Art Deco Festival weekend is a particular highlight in my calendar. It is wonderful to see both Napier residents and visitors alike enjoying the many events being held during the Festival; whether it be watching the car parade, competing in the soapbox derby, enjoying the bands playing or the aerial displays, or relaxing on the long lawn with friends, there is something for everyone. I offer a very warm welcome to all that are planning to attend this fabulous event, especially if you are new to the festival and this part of the world, I hope you are able to enjoy all Napier, and the wider Hawke’s Bay, has to offer. The ART DECO TRUST organise the NAPIER ART DECO FESTIVAL as part of its annual activities The Art Deco Trust is committed to the preservation, restoration, promotion and celebrations of Hawke’s Bay’s Art Deco Heritage.
