EMMANUEL COLLEGE COMMUNITY News Dear Parents and Friends Issue No. 20 18 Dec, 2020 College Governance With the transition of College governance responsibilities, from January 2021, to the limited company, Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS), the College Board met for the final time earlier in the month. Thanks to Caitlin Sneyders and Nikolas Marjavonic for their contributions as student members over 2020. It is understood that draft terms of reference for a newly constituted College Advisory Council will be available in coming days. In light of the above, it is expected that the current membership of the Board will transition to the Advisory Council, with the first meeting scheduled for March 2021. Congratulations to Georgia Wedding and Joseph Siccita as the student member nominations for the Council. Class of 2020 It was very special to be able to celebrate the graduation of the Class of 2020 with such a wonderful ceremony in Quiroga Hall, followed by an al fresco gathering on a gorgeous early summer evening. The continued inspiration of our Year 12s was again to the fore – all participated in a responsible and enthusiastic manner. We wish the Class of 2020 all success with ATAR results to be published on 30 December and on the next step of their exciting journey. Joy and peace at Christmas One name associated with the birth of Jesus was the name of promise from Hebrew scripture ‘Emmanuel’ – ‘God with us’. In Jesus’ birth this promise was fulfilled. As we celebrate this continued presence of Emmanuel among us, may we experience the joy and peace of Christmas, blessings in the New Year and a safe and enjoyable break. Christopher Stock Principal
Campus Leaders 2020 brought with it incredible challenges as well as opportunity for personal growth, the excitement of learning, the adventure and necessity of trying new things and the richness of building relationships. As the boys and girls left both campuses for their summer holidays it seemed like just yesterday that they were arriving for their first day of the year. Although the year did not eventuate into what we all expected, it did prove to be a year that tested our resilience, perseverance and patience. Although COVID was totally unknown to most of us at the beginning of the year, it is now a word that is synonymous with 2020 and one that tested all of us. Although so many of the annual events that the college celebrates could not occur, it was in many ways great to return to the basics in term four of friendships and gratitude when we were all able to return to school in term four. On Thursday 3 December we were able to hold the Class of 2020 Graduation at Notre Dame Campus. It was a wonderful celebration of the students’ six years at the College. The celebration commenced with a prayer service and at the conclusion the Graduands were presented with their Graduation packs including a “Class of 2020” face mask that sums up their very challenging year. Following this the students celebrated in the Agora where there were 7 food trucks, Mocktail station and DJ. It was a very fitting conclusion to their time at the College and we wish them well in their future pursuits. Both campuses celebrated the end of the year with a Liturgy on 4 December. Also on that day at House Assemblies, the achievements of the students who were awarded a certificate in either Excellence in Academic Achievement or Personal Best Effort were recognised and presented. Congratulations to all the students who received Academic and Personal Best awards for their hard work and dedication throughout the year and we encourage all students to work diligently next year to ensure their personal best. Congratulations to our Year 9 students on their outstanding work during their project week, and to our Year 7 students for language day and language week. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and active participation in both of these events showcasing the wonderful work of the students through the course of these events. A reminder that if you need to purchase any new items of uniform that this needs to be done over the summer break in preparation for the commencement of the new year. Parents are reminded that it is a College expectation that their daughter or sons’ uniform fits correctly and is not shabby in appearance. It is anticipated that students will need to change over their uniform every three years due to growth and day to day wear and tear. Current uniform items will be available from Noone Imagewear and their shop is located at Hoppers Crossing. Just a reminder, the first day of the 2021 school year for all levels is Monday 1 February. At the end of this newsletter is the last article from Michael Grose’s Parenting Ideas for 2020. This week’s article is entitled Modelling self-kindness. The article talks about how it has been a tough parenting year and we would encourage you to take a moment to read this interesting article. Thank you to all the students, parents and staff at Emmanuel College for what has been a unique year. We pray that all families experience holy days on their holidays and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. We wish all families a very happy, safe and restful break. We look forward to your ongoing support in the education of your child in the New Year. Thank you very much for your kind words over the year and we’re looking forward to your continued support into 2021. David Barr, Chris O’Malley & Kelley Revelman
Leader of Mission Integration The Season of Advent In the coming weeks we will celebrate the occasion of the birth of a baby over 2000 years ago. A tiny vulnerable newborn. Born in a manger, surrounded by animals, and visited by a shepherd. As we know, the shepherd was considered an undesirable occupation, holding low status in society. They would spend nights out in the field, prone to illness and often carry a foul smell due to their limited opportunities for hygienic practices. Within days this child would flee as a refugee. Nomadic. Homeless. Poor. In years to come the child would return and grow up in his hometown, which would stain him amongst other Jews with the negative stigma attached to those from Nazareth. As he entered adulthood he was often misunderstood, disregarded, chased out of town, mocked, and the target of entrapment. He pushed the edges of social norms due to his radically inclusive and loving nature. He was eventually betrayed by one of his closest friends and tortured and executed by the Romans. And yet we remember his birth and feel filled with great hope and joy. We continue to believe in a world of peace and love. This little baby child shone a light to a path leading to the kingdom of love on earth, as it is in heaven. As an Emmanuel community, we proclaim the good news that the Christ child was born. May your family be a kingdom of love this Christmas and always. Christmas Appeal We are thrilled to announce that the representative from the Hobson Bay Christmas Appeal confirmed that the students and staff were so generous in their donations of presents and gifts cards that all those in the community who have registered for a Christmas present donation will receive one. Hundreds of children will now wake up to find a present on Christmas morning, which they would otherwise not have received, had we not given so generously. Our Marianist Characteristic of Service, Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation helps to guide our charism as a community filled with compassion and generosity for the less fortunate. Climate Future A number of our students engaged in a zoom conversation with Wyndham Council to discuss climate change and sustainability in our local communities. Wyndham are seeking to form a Climate Future Youth Group which will drive local initiatives to create a more sustainable community. This is the first step in starting the conversation to effect real change. A number of good ideas were discussed which will form part of our strategic planning for 2021 as we continue to become a more sustainable school, with the ultimate goal of become carbon neutral in the years to come. Graduation 2020 One of the highlights of the year was our ability to farewell our class of 2020 with a special prayer service led by Fr Binh Le, followed by certificate presentations and a food truck music festival, on Thursday 3rd December. Over 350 staff and students attended the event, with 380 parents, family members and friends watching via our live stream service. May our graduates go forward to live successful lives, be proclaimers of the good news, justice seekers and remember that they are always part of our Emmanuel family. College Chaplains As this is our final newsletter for the year, I would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank our college chaplains who have been such a wonderful support in the faith dimension of the college. Thank you to Fr Greg Trythall, Fr John Healy, Fr Paul Tru, Fr Binh Le, Fr John O’Connor and Archpriest Michael Kalka, for your continued support of our college masses. I know that your parish lives demand so much of all your time and we as a college truly appreciate you taking some of this precious time and sharing it with us. I wish you all a safe and joyous Christmas. Marianist Prayer for Christmas Mary, we come to you as once did the shepherds and kings, to find Jesus, our King and Shepherd. We offer you our lives today. May we always find Jesus with you and treasure all the wondrous things which come to those who search for Jesus in faith. May the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit be glorified in all places through the Immaculate Virgin Mary. Amen. Peace Mark Sciberras Let all that you do be done in love (1COR 16:14)

Year 12s Congratulations to all Year 12s Congratulations to all Year 12s who completed sitting their exams. The entire cohort is commended on the dedication and perseverance that they showed in preparing for and completing their exams. This has been no ordinary year and this cohort have proudly and without complaint adjusted to everything that the year and conditions surrounding COVID 19 has thrown their way. It was a joy to see the last group come out of the Italian exam on Tuesday 1 December. Well done to all students in supporting each other and working with their teachers to be the best they could be. Alice Power and Leonie Rushbrook Student Leaders of 2021 Leader Day As Emmanuel prepares for 2021 the Year 12 College Student Leaders for 2021 were enthusiastically working towards their goals and how to realise them for the entire student body. Students focused on understanding more deeply our Marianist charism, and what is means to live out the portfolios of: Educate for Formation in Faith Educate in Family Spirit Provide an Integral Quality Education Educate for Adaption and Change Educate for Service, Justice and Peace and the Integrity of Creation Students collaborated in their portfolios in cross campus teams to brainstorm ideas and to look at hurdles they may experience. The College Leadership Team worked with the students, listening to their ideas and providing valuable wisdom. The students developed strategic plans to involve as many students as possible to realise their goals. They acknowledged the great progress of all past Student Leaders and are just as eager to use their Leadership positions to serve the Emmanuel family. It was a privilege to work with the Student Leaders of 2021. Alice Power, Nick Blassis, Leonie Rushbrook

The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program is an academic enrichment program designed to support high achieving Victorian students. Jake and Jessica have the exciting opportunity of experiencing university life and taking part in a range of academic events and activities. Hobson’s Bay ‘The Big Ideas Day’ The Big Ideas Day has been designed as a 'first pass' entrepreneurial event to assist young people aged 16 and higher to explore their business idea and begin developing a problem-solving mindset. It is a FREE workshop happening on the 20th Jan 2021. Applications are now open and positions are limited to ensure young people are provided with all the resources and support they require through this experience of building their business idea. What happens during the day? The 7 hour Big Ideas Day is a facilitated workshop using a step-by-step approach, facilitated through iGen’s proprietary Opportunity Analysis Canvas which participants will be trained in using. Participants work through a process of idea validation, market opportunities, investment requirements (time, money, resources) and by the end of the day have a Canvas which allows them to make further decisions about the future of their business idea. They are given resources, coaching, frameworks and skills to move forward with a business or other solution now or into the future to support Hobsons Bay's post-COVID economic recovery. If you are interested, please go to http://www.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/bigideasday If you have any further queries about this program please contact Bethany on 9932 4000 or adminys@hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au Year 10 Work Experience 2021 Recently, all Year 10 students and their parents/guardians should have received an e-mail regarding the work experience program for 2021. In this e-mail was a letter and important documents pertaining to finding and securing a suitable work experience placement. A reminder that the work experience is an important and compulsory component of the Year 10 curriculum, the aim of which is to encourage students to reflect on their post-secondary school pathways motivating their choice of senior school program in the process. Despite the current circumstances surrounding COVID-19, we anticipate that the work experience program will run in 2021. The duration of work experience is for 1 week - from the 21st to 25th June 2021. This is the last week of Term 2, 2021. Whilst students will be supported to secure a work experience placement, they are largely responsible for finding their own, developing important skills in the process. We encourage you to support your son/daughter to find a work experience placement by using your own network of family and friends. Equally, your own place of employment may be utilised as a source of work experience for your son/ daughter. To avoid disappointment, the process of finding a suitable placement should commence early, as some placements are difficult to secure. In addition, most schools in the local area also offer work experience towards the end of Term 2, so your son/daughter’s placement needs to be organised sooner rather than later. If your son/daughter does not find a suitable work experience placement then they are required to attend school and complete a complementary program of work education. Finally, we will communicate with you in the event the work experience program is altered because of COVID-19. Prue Warne & Sol Di Maggio

INSIGHTS Modelling self-kindness This has been a tough parenting year. On a personal level it’s been challenging, but when you add the extra di iculty of helping children and young people navigate this year, you’d be forgiven for feeling like you’ve had enough. It’s timely to look at US-based academic Dr. Brene’ Brown’s research that informed her book The Gi of Imperfect Parenting. Brown’s core finding was that the best parenting strategies rely on modelling for them to be adopted by children. That’s a little scary as it means we need to be the adults that we want to our kids to become. There is great power in kids watching us practise how we manage hardships, frustrations and di iculties. Whether we use self- kindness or self-put downs, either will leave an impression on our kids. Not only do they see how we react when we stumble or make mistakes, but we give them permission to act in the same ways. It’s hard to be self-kind If you’re a goal-oriented type of person, highly-judgemental or someone who likes to get things done, then self-kindness can be di icult to befriend. It goes against the grain to laugh at your mistakes or miss a deadline, even though it won’t be the end of the world as you know it. If you recognise this type of rigid approach then it may be time let go of some old ways. Inflexibility is the enemy of healthy wellbeing, which thrives on adaptability and self-forgiveness. Let them hear the process Giving a child or young person insight into your thinking is a powerful parenting strategy. Sharing your struggles and mess ups with kids in age-appropriate ways takes vulnerability and promotes empathy. It takes courage to share a comment such as, “I keep putting myself down, which is not helpful. I’ve got to talk to myself as if I’m talking to someone I love.” Disclosing this type of self-talk is only useful if it’s done in a safe, matter of fact way and a child is comfortable with the message. Self-kindness means acting compassionately toward yourself when you are struggling to meet your own expectations, meeting with unexpected di iculties and/or met with failure. It’s time to drop the sti upper lip, put aside the strict schedule and stop berating yourself. Instead say to yourself, “This is really tough right now. How can I take some comfort and look a er myself?” This is a message worth modelling particularly, if you are living with a perfectionist or a child with tendencies toward anxiety.
