Madrid Food Bank Foundation An organization at the service of those most in need of the Madrid's community Ø Respectful with all the people and ideas. Ø Transparent and careful with the environment. Ø A benchmark in the field of volunteer organizations. We raise society awareness and we work to solve the problems caused by hunger, food waste and lack of resources to lead a dignified life. We fulfill our mission through the management of the Madrid Food Bank
Our mission Through the management of the Food Bank we promote circular economy and avoid waste at all stages of the food chain. We recover free of charge food suitable for consumption and distribute it to the most vulnerable people, also free of charge, through legally recognized charities. There is poverty not only in the 3rd world. In CAM (Community of Madrid) there are many people with insufficient resources to be able to cover their basic needs regularly. The pandemic caused by Covid19 has increased the need for these people incorporating new groups that now also need help.
The Madrid Food Bank * Non-profit organization, private, non-denominational and apolitical. * Associate member of the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL - 54 Banks). * We turned 25 years in September 2019. Main recognitions: Ø Accredited by the Lealtad Foundation Ø Prince of Asturias Award to La Concordia 2012 Ø Silver Medal of the Community of Madrid 2009
Our principles NEUTRALITY PROFESSIONALISM We do not discriminate based on Pre-retired and retired volunteers beliefs if they do not violate dignity of people. + Youth incorporated during the pandemic GRATUITY TRANSPARENCY Ø In all phases of the process. Ø Accredited by Fundación Lealtad Ø No management position is paid. Ø Audited and public accounts. Principles included in the Foundation Charter, Volunteer Charter and Code of good practices of Food Banks.
Selection of beneficiaries With criteria of impartiality and non-discrimination between people or public or private entities. Ø Requesting help that our Foundation can provide. Ø Justifying their application for the purpose that is requested. Ø Fulfilling the required requirements. In 2020, in the face of the crisis generated by xxx the pandemic, we started a procedure of EXPRESS ADMISSIONS to quickly admit new entities and associations and respond with maximum speed to an unprecedented food crisis.
Our way of operating Ø We appeal to the solidarity of people and institutions for food donations that we deliver to the final beneficiaries. Ø For the first time in 2020 we had to make purchases of food, as we were not able to meet the extra demand of aid requests with donations alone, given the large increase in the number of people living in poverty for the first time. xxx We distribute food to the final beneficiary through legally recognized charities of the Madrid Autonomous Community
Purposes of the Foundation Awareness activities among children and young people We work in Educational Centers to raise awareness about food waste and the problems derived from lack of food resources by organizing Kilo Operations (K.O.), visits and workshops and promoting their participation as volunteers. We educate in values of social participation.
Purposes of the Foundation Activities with companies participation In collaboration with the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs of different companies, we promote the participation of their employees in corporative volunteering activities in our warehouses as well as Kilo Operations (K.O.)- physical and virtual - in their own company or in distribution chains. We help companies to develop their CSR actions and compliance with the SDGs through joint projects.
The 2020 context: the year everything changed
The most difficult year and an unprecedented challenge In March 2020, with the arrival of confinement: • In the first two months, the demand for aid increased by 78%. From serving 130,000 people in December 2019 increased to 230,000 in May 2020 • From March to August 2020, 55% of the permanent volunteers stopped collaborating: Out of 455 permanent volunteers in December 2019, we were left operating with 250 for being a risk group - average age 67 years - or for not being able to carry out their tasks. • 85% of the Charitable Entities (more than 500 in the CAM) only received food from our organization • The entities could not collect food in our warehouses due to lack of volunteers and mobility. The soup kitchens closed their kitchens and the distribution entities - 65% - could not distribute to the families. • At the beginning of the confinement there was no coordination with other entities of the Third Sector or with the Administration The Covid19 crisis, poverty worsened and was visible in the Community of Madrid. The hunger queues, even today, continue. We had to reinvent ourselves to face the situation.
Solutions provided to face the challenge • Establishment of teleworking (video conference platform donation: Nazca Capital and Acens). • Incorporation of 172 young volunteers (warehouses and transportation). • Coordination with Social Services (CAM and Town Halls) and other entities of the Third Sector. To be able to serve more people in need without breaking stock or distribution of food: • Collaboration with new Charities and Associations (Express Admissions). • Reinforcement in existing Charities for a greater distribution of food. • Provisioning through customized virtual Kilo Operations ( in distribution chains and OK Emergency Covid19) and donations from HORECA and Mercamadrid merchants. • Alliances to distribute prepared menus (World Central Kitchen: more than 700,000; Vodafone / Viena Capellanes: 72,000 and Telefonica District Nursery: 6,000). • Transportation of food to Charitable Entities through aid from private companies, individuals and the Army (" Balmis Operation”) and coordination of direct deliveries from different groups (cooks, hospitality ... Etc) We discovered our weaknesses but also that we were and continue to be essential
Other solutions taken Improvements in management seeking maximum efficiency: Ø Strategic alliance with the KPMG Foundation. Teamwork with professionals from KPMG - Procurement and Logistics - to establish food purchase procedure (definition of the basic product basket, stock needs, search for suppliers at source, negotiation and optimization of the purchase and transport price). Ø Use of digital tools. Start of a digitization process, supported by Foundation Telefónica, Acens and ICAI Ø Creation of the Traffic figure to improve food traceability Ø Volunteers training. La digitalización es clave para dar continuidad a la misión del Banco de Alimentos, poder abordar la crisis alimentaria y seguir construyendo el Banco del futuro adaptado a la nueva realidad.
We received support from the Administrations ”Balmis Operation” of the Ministry of Defense We received help from different army corps (UME: Military Unit for Emergencies) and firefighters for transport of food and disinfection tasks in our facilities.
