Darwin, Kakadu, Katherine & the Top End Discover the Sparkling Harbour Of Darwin, the Indigenous Culture Of The Top End, The Misty Waterfalls Of Litchfield National Park And The Exceptional Natural Beauty Of Kakadu National Park On this Amazing Tour This July. Thursday 1 – Thursday 8 July 2021 $4,269 Twin Share + $670 Single Supplement Day 1: Thursday 1 July: Sunshine Coast to Darwin This morning’s 9:40am flight to Darwin leaves from Brisbane. Upon arrival, our local touring coach will meet us at the airport and take us to the city centre, where we check into the Travelodge Resort for the next three nights. Mid-afternoon we make our way to Aquascene to feed the fish. Since the early 1950s a unique and natural phenomenon occurs on the high tide amongst the tranquil tropical waters of Darwin’s Doctors Gully. Hundreds of friendly local wild fish swim to the shallow shoreline in search of a gratuitous meal of fresh bread. Over the course of this enduring 60 plus year tradition, the fish have shed their normal shyness and are willingly hand-fed to the delight of thousands of fascinated locals and tourists every year. Aquascene was established in 1981 and has become a magical attraction that we can all enjoy – but you may have to get your feet wet! Now we head to the Mindil Beach Sunset Market – it is a major social event and this fabulous local market offers over 200 stalls with nearly 60 food stalls from more than 30 different countries. With the multi-cultural background of Darwin, we are sure to be tempted by some delicious food and smells as we explore the market! Colourful arts and crafts vendors peddle their wares - handmade jewellery, natural remedies, artistic creations, and unique fashion statements. Shop till you drop, catch a fire show, stop for a massage, or be entertained by buskers, bands, and talented performers as you wind your way through the palm lined boulevards of Mindil Beach. A lovely spot to watch the sunset. Dinner is at our own expense this evening. At a pre-arranged time, we will transfer back to the hotel. Day 2: Friday 2 July: Exploring Darwin (B + D) Many people aren’t aware of the importance of Darwin during World War II, so we’ll look at the city as it is today and learn about the involvement and history of the bombings of Darwin. The present city centre was established in 1869 and contains many of its remaining historic buildings such as the Old Court House and Government House. We see Parliament House that was built on the site of the Darwin Post Office bombed during the war, the port area plus the many other fascinating sights of Australia’s northern gateway. We return to our hotel for some free time and can walk to the local shops to purchase lunch and have a look around. Late afternoon we will head to the Stokes Hill Wharf with a visit to the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Bombing of Darwin Tourist Facility - two iconic stories in one iconic location! Whilst here, we join the Spirit of Darwin for a sunset dinner cruise on Darwin Harbour. We will see the Darwin skyline from a totally different perspective while enjoying an interesting commentary and dinner. Breakfast at Hotel | Lunch at Own Expense | Dinner on Darwin Harbour Cruise Day 3: Saturday 3 July: More of Darwin (B + D) This morning’s breakfast is at Crocosaurus Cove, located in the heart of the City. It has the largest display of Australian reptiles in the world, a two- storey freshwater aquarium, a turtle sanctuary, local NT Aboriginal Art and Culture displays. We may get to “stroke” a baby croc as we enjoy our breakfast. Following free time to purchase lunch, we take a drive through Fannie Bay to East Point where we visit the Darwin Military Museum. It is a unique combination of Australian military heritage and modern tropical gardens. An interesting fact mentioned at the museum is that the Japanese aircraft that attacked Darwin on 19th February 1942 were deployed from the same aircraft carrier that deployed aircraft for the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and more bombs were dropped in the bombing of Darwin than on Pearl Harbor. We return to our hotel for some free time before dinner. Breakfast at Crocosaurus Cove | Lunch at Own Expense | Dinner on Darwin Harbour Cruise Make sure you don’t miss out! Day 4: Sunday 4 July: Darwin to Kakadu (B + L + D) This morning we head down the Stuart Highway to join the Arnhem Highway – with our destination being the Top End’s most important asset – the World Heritage Listed Kakadu National Park. Aborigines have inhabited the land for more than 50,000 years, leaving behind incredible galleries of rock art - more than 5000 sites of historical or cultural importance have been identified, though only a few are open to visitors. Add Kakadu's magnificent scenery, unique flora and fauna, and you have one of the world's greatest natural wonders. Our first stop on our way to Kakadu is the fabulous Spectacular Jumping Crocodile Cruise. See powerful saltwater crocodiles as they propel themselves high out of the water to snatch their prey. With the help of experienced guides, we learn more about these magnificent creatures, and can watch crocs jump for food from the safety of our boat. Back on dry land, we enter the National Park. This afternoon, we head into the park and drive to Ubirr Rock – the site of one of the best and most accessible rock art galleries in the park. The Main Gallery is an easy 1k walk from the car park and contains examples of mouth sprayed hand stencils, hunters carrying spears and fish, birds and animals presented in x-ray style, revealing internal organs and bone structures. We now make our way to Cooinda where we board our magical Yellow Water Sunset Cruise. Nowhere else will we see such a concentration of so many species of diverse wildlife than here, including Brolgas, Egrets, Jabiru and hopefully a crocodile or two. Two cruises in one day, but totally different! Back on dry land, we return to our hotel for dinner. Kakadu Lodge Cooinda Hotel | 1 night Breakfast and Dinner at Hotel | Lunch at Bowali Visitor Centre Day 5: Monday 5 July: Kakadu to Katherine (B + D) We have a more leisurely start to begin our touring this morning. Not far from our resort is the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre. The Aboriginal traditional landowners of Kakadu National Park have wanted to tell the story about their culture for a long time. Through the displays and exhibitions, we can gain an understanding of the Bininj and their country. We now head to Nourlangie Rock. The walls of this rock have served as canvases for thousands of years, providing windows to a rich spiritual tradition. From Nourlangie, we depart the National Park to Pine Creek where we stop for lunch. This afternoon we continue onto Katherine where we are in for a real treat as Golden Guitar winner and horseman extraordinaire, Tom Curtain, delights and entertains us with his Katherine Outback Experience. The show celebrates life in the outback through real horse-starting, working dog demonstrations, live music, and humorous bush tales. Knotts Crossing Resort, Katherine | 1 night Breakfast and Dinner at Hotel | Lunch at Own Expense from Mary River Roadhouse Make sure you don’t miss out! Day 6: Tuesday 6 July: Katherine to Darwin (B + D) Of course, a visit to Katherine would not be complete without a cruise through Katherine Gorge. The colours of the early morning awaken as we emerge into the first gorge. See the mist rising above the smooth water’s surface, hear the wildlife stirring from the night and breathe the crisp clean air. This cruise will allow us to discover the unspoiled beauty of the morning - a truly memorable start to the day and a photographer’s dream. On our way back to Darwin, we visit Litchfield National Park, which has gained the reputation as the jewel of Northern Territory’s crown. The 65,000ha National Park has untouched rainforests, hot springs, magnificent waterfalls, and stunning scenery. We stop for lunch (at your own expense) at the Litchfield Café before exploring the park. There are some great photo opportunities, and we stop to see the magnetic anthills and the magnificent views of Florence Falls from the lookout platform. For anyone who may like a swim – perhaps do so in the Wangi Falls pool. Later this afternoon, we return to Darwin. Travelodge Resort, Darwin | 2 nights Breakfast Pack Served on Katherine Gorge Cruise | Lunch at Own Expense from the Litchfield Cafe | Dinner at Hotel Day 7: Wednesday 7 July: Free Day to Do As You Please (B + D) After several early morning starts, today we can enjoy a leisurely breakfast and the rest of the day is free for personal sightseeing, shopping, or relaxing at the Hotel. Breakfast and Dinner at Hotel | Lunch at Own Expense Day 8: Thursday 8 July: Homeward Bound (B) Enjoy one last buffet breakfast before we complete our check-out formalities and head to suburban Winnellie and the Darwin Aviation Museum. Here there is an impressive collection of the Territory's aviation history. A massive B52 Bomber dwarfs other exhibits, including Mirage and Sabre jets, a Spitfire replica, Wessex and Huey Cobra helicopters. Early afternoon we are transferred to the Darwin airport for our 2:25pm flight home. It’s been a fantastic trip, with many wonderful memories of our time in the in the Top End.
