In 2017, he received the “Constructors of Works” Award by the Compagnia delle Opere. Scientific and research activities The scientific and research activities – besides his teaching activities – carried out by Amedeo Lepore developed in several moments and directions. A first phase was more focused on contemporary issues, based on studying the economic conditions of the Central-Southern regions of the country and the gap between Northern and Southern Italy. A second phase, developed during the PhD Course and in the post-doctoral period, as well as during all of his research activities he carried out within the University of Bari, was more connected with modernist interests, especially concerning the economic development of Spain, business history, accounting history, insurance history, as well as the history of the Mediterranean and Atlantic trade in general. A further phase, always during his activities within the University of Bari and, recently, the Second University of Naples (currently, the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli), has seen, alongside the modernistic research fields, the adjunction of wider and wider contemporary interests. This penchant has turned to a multiplicity of themes, such as: the evolution of international economic relations – starting from the process of European integration, the economic conditions in the Mediterranean, the relationships Italy had with international institutions, including the connections between the extraordinary intervention and the 11
World Bank – and the deployment of the globalization process in its various aspects; the trends of the less developed regional areas, the Italian economic dualism and the phenomena featuring divergence (and convergence) between Northern and Southern Italy; the origins and evolution of business history, marketing and innovation; the use of new methodologies, such as those connected with electronic and telematic sources, in the field of Economic History and in its related disciplines. Amedeo Lepore carried out an intense activity focused on Business History in all its aspects, extending its role and enhancing – through specific teachings, within the Faculty of Economics at the University of Bari, the Department of Business and Management of the LUISS Guido Carli University of Rome and the Department of Economics of the Second University of Naples (currently, the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli) – a discipline that experienced great rooting and expansion, both in the United States of America and Europe. Concerning these topics, Professor Lepore was also involved in teaching and research activities, themselves based on the support of the theories, the methods and the telematic sources applied to business and its evolution, including constant references to Web 2.0 and to the semantic Web, to business-driven open innovation, as well as to the dissemination, finally, of the bioeconomy and Industry 4.0. These represent completely new frontiers in expandig this discipline. He also gave many presentations to several scientific Conferences and published international-level researches in the field of business economics and its evolution. Considering the specialization activity achieved in Spain and his studies on Southern Italy, Amedeo Lepore has always considered the evolution of the internationalization processes and territorial phenomena from a particular viewpoint. This view allowed to effectively valorise the Southern, Mediterranean and Atlantic perspectives, not only considering them in a “Braudelian” sense connected with an essential relationship amongst the geographical spaces and the rhythm of history, but also as an effective verification tool for those economic trends developing themselves in the Italian milieu or near it and within others European countries, besides the relations with this huge oceanic area. He took particular care with this dimension of his research, through various contributions, amongst which his participation in a conspicuous number of Conferences and his numerous interventions having tackled several aspects of the economy and society within these wide areas should be mentioned, as well as specific works dedicated to the context of the “Mare Internum” and of the “Sea of Darkness”. In carrying out his activities, Professor Lepore has dealt extensively with the “Southern Question”, with the Italian economic dualism, as well as with the economic and industrial history of Southern Italy. He has focused on these issues, being crucial for national economic history, both through his researches within the Universities and the analysis and elaboration activities he has 12
undertaken with the SVIMEZ and other Southern Italy-focused research centers. Moreover, he has coordinated, within the Presidency Committee of the Associazione per lo sviluppo dell’industria nel Mezzogiorno (SVIMEZ), the sector dealing with Historical Memory and Economic Archives, starting with the one concerning the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno, as well as directing the bioeconomy and circular economy research project, currently underway. He also gave several presentations to scientific Conferences and developed national and international study initiatives, editing and publishing many researches on all these issues. Amedeo Lepore coordinated, at the Department of European, Public Law and Economic Historical Studies of the University of Bari, the “México” International Economic History Research Group, created in order to tackle some specific themes connected with Economic History in Latin America, Spain, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic during the Modern Era, through the comparative study of several European and American sources. He participated, together with the Italian Central State Archive and the SVIMEZ (as a coordinator for the part entrusted to the Second University of Naples), in the project titled “Archivi dello Sviluppo Economico Territoriale. Modelli innovativi di conservazione e riuso delle fonti per la storia degli interventi straordinari per lo sviluppo del Mezzogiorno (Archives of Economic and Territorial Development. Innovative models of conservation and reuse of the sources concerning the history of extraordinary interventions for the development of Southern Italy)”, funded by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development (MISE). This project concerned the recovery of the historical memory, the Archive and the documents of the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno, by recognizing, classifying, valorising and digitalizing the vast documentary sources the entity possessed. The most significant and effective result of these activities has been the publication of two volumes, arising from the relevant scientific research, together with the foundation of the Historical Archive of the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno and the setup of the digital sources of the extraordinary intervention, now made available in a structured form on the portal of the Central State Archive, under the following denomination: “Archivi dello Sviluppo Economico Territoriale” (https://aset.acs.beniculturali.it/aset-web/).
