Welcome
After completing a Master’s degree in Journalism,
I got my first job in academic publishing at the
Press. Since starting, I’ve had the opportunity to
work on some of the most important contributions
to the debate on social challenges around the
globe.

As the editor for criminology and criminal justice
books, I’ve been able to shape the list to include
some of the most vital topics affecting the most
vulnerable and marginalised groups in our
society. It’s a privilege to work with the criminology
community, who are all so passionate about
the important work they’re doing and I think that
shows in the fantastic books we’ve published so
far.

If you are interested in writing
                 for our Criminology list, please

Chasing the Mafia
’Ndrangheta Memories and Journeys

Anna Sergi, University of Essex

The ’ndrangheta – the Italian Calabrian mafia – is one of wealthiest
and most powerful criminal organisations today. It is considered
Italy’s most powerful mafia; it’s not only the main object of concern
for antimafia units in Italy, but also joint investigative teams in
Europe and beyond.

Combining autobiography, travel ethnography, memoir, academic
rigour and investigative journalism, this book provides a global
outlook to the ’ndrangheta, taking the reader to small villages and
locations in Italy and abroad to Australia, North America and
Argentina.

RANI DHAVAN SHANKARDASS, PENAL REFORM AND JUSTICE
ASSOCIATION (PRAJA), INDIA

How do governments and societies use prison to respond to underlying
and fundamental social, economic and political issues? Using data on world
imprisonment and numerous international examples from his personal
experience, Coyle, a prison practitioner, academic and international expert,
discusses the failings of prison around the world.

Acknowledging the influence of external agencies, such as the Committee
for the Prevention of Torture, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights
and court interventions in the use of solitary confinement, he offers some
positive pointers for the future and how there might be a better distribution of
resources between criminal justice and social justice by an application of the
principles of justice reinvestment.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the inadequacies
of the state’s response to public health and public order issues COVID-19 COLLECTION
through deeply flawed legislation. Written in the context
of the #BlackLivesMatter protests, this book explores why
law enforcement responses to a public health emergency are
prioritised over welfare provision and what this tells us about the
state’s criminal justice institutions. Informing scholarly, civic and
activist thinking on the political nature of policing, it reveals how
increasing police powers disproportionately affects Black people
and suggests alternative ways of designing public safety beyond a
law enforcement context.

that engaging prisoners in philosophy education enabled
them to think about some of the ‘big’ questions in life

ROBERT REINER, LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND
POLITICAL SCIENCE

Renowned criminologist Mike Hough illuminates the principles and practices of
good policing in this important analysis of the police service’s legitimacy and the
factors, such as public trust, that drive it.

As concern grows at the growth in crimes of serious violence, he challenges
conventional political and public thinking on crime and scrutinises strategies and
tactics like deterrence and stop-and-search. Contrasting ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ approaches
to policing and punishment, he offers a fresh perspective that stresses the importance
of securing normative compliance.

For officers, students, policy makers and anyone who has an interest in the police
force, this is a valuable roadmap for ethical policing.

Drawing on criminology, philosophy and theology,
this text develops a theory of ‘redemptive criminology’
that could revolutionise the rehabilitation system.
Challenging concepts and practices of rehabilitation, it
offers new insights into punishment and retribution and
explores the connections between victims, perpetrators
                         and the community.

This pioneering study looks across key trafficking
crimes from human trafficking to drug dealing and
black markets in wildlife, to develop a social theory of
transnational criminal markets. Revealing how traffickers
think of their illegal enterprises as ‘just business’,
Mackenzie draws broader lessons for the ways forward in
understanding criminality in this emerging field.

                           CRIME, MEDIA, CULTURE

This accessible and authoritative book assesses the
neglected value of fictional narratives in criminology as
a tool for understanding, explaining and reducing crime
                           and social harm.

With examples of complex narratives across film,
television, novels and graphic novels, it demonstrates
for the first time the criminological potential of
fiction around the world. For academics, students and
practitioners, it is a thought-provoking critical analysis
that establishes a new theory of the criminological value
                           of fiction.

sub-discipline, it aims to shift power from employers to
workers to reduce levels of labour exploitation and work-
                       based harm.

“This unique book asks a simple
question: why do we imprison so
many people with mental illnesses?
The answer is not simple and
Skotnicki challenges conventional
thinking by skilfully weaving together
theology, philosophy, psychology
and contemporary penal practice.”
ANDREW MILLIE, EDGE HILL UNIVERSITY

Why do the UK and US disproportionately incarcerate
the mentally ill? Via multiple reframings of the question
- theological, socioeconomic and psychological -
Andrew Skotnicki diagnoses a ‘persecution of the
prophetic’ at the heart of the contemporary penal system
and society more broadly.

Intersectionality and Crime

Jane Healy, Bournemouth University and
Ben Colliver, Birmingham City University

Experts demonstrate the value of applying
intersectionality to criminology in this first collection
of its kind. They set out the theory’s application in
relation to race, gender, class and age, and explore
a range of experiences of victimisation, hate crimes
and harm. In doing so, the book refreshes approaches
to criminology and pushes intersectionality into the
research mainstream.

“In his timely book, Angus Nurse
convincingly demonstrates that
reparations are the logical response
to institutionalised anti-Black
racism.”
JENNIFER M. PAGE, UNIVERSITY OF
ZURICH

Police shootings and incarceration inequalities are
just two examples of the legacy of slavery in the US
and UK. Offering a criminological exploration of the
case for slavery and anti-Black racism reparations, this
book refutes the policy perspectives that argue against
reparations.

Its conclusions are not necessarily
pessimistic; it is lucid and clear
without oversimplifying the debate.”

explores how diverse fields of social policy intersect
more deeply than ever with crime control and in so
doing, deploy troubling strategies.

The deaths of Michael Brown and George Floyd at the
hands of police officers have uncovered an apparent
legitimacy crisis within American policing. Drawing on
in-depth interviews, this book explores how policing has
changed in the ‘post-Ferguson’ era and informs policing
practice to promote effective crime prevention and gain
public trust.

Can the criminal justice system achieve justice based on
its ability to determine the truth? Drawing on a variety
of disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives, this
book investigates the concept of truth and scrutinises
how well the criminal justice process facilitates truth-
finding. This important work bridges the gap between
what people expect from the criminal justice system and
what it can legitimately deliver.

How can we reimagine society in an era of climate change,
pandemic, hunger, poverty, questions of racial, ethnic
and gender justice and other pressing global societal
challenges? Significant threats and dangers lie ahead of us,
but so do opportunities, as new ways of being, thinking and
doing emerge. This new, fully Open Access journal aims to
facilitate thinking about these positive new trajectories and
to become the journal of choice to address the complexities
of global social challenges across disciplines and fields.

It will be the first such journal to be based in the social
sciences while also engaging with research from humanities,
arts and STEM. Including marginalised, minority and
indigenous world views, the journal will be an important
home for research that contributes to the creation of
alternative futures that acknowledge past injustices and are
socially and environmentally just and sustaining.

The Journal of Gender-Based Violence (JGBV) is the first international
journal based in Europe to showcase the work of scholars across
disciplinary and topic boundaries, and from a range of methodologies.

The journal acknowledges both the breadth of gender-based violence
(GBV) and its links to gendered inequalities. It aims to continue to
document the voices and experiences of victims and survivors of GBV,
to publish work regarding those who perpetrate GBV and to examine
the varied and complex social structures, inequalities and gender norms
through which GBV is produced and sustained.

The journal recognises the intersection of gender with other identities
and power relations, such as ethnicity, nationality, sexuality, faith, disability
                                        and economic status.

The Journal of Gender-Based Violence is published by Policy Press on behalf
