Welcome to this guide for Years 9 to 12 students. At NPBHS a senior student chooses a combination of either full or half-year courses to make up their programme of study. This allows students the flexibility to design a programme that suits their needs and interests. This Course Selection Guide has been designed to provide information to enable students to choose the courses that suit them best. All students will be given guidance from their Huia teacher on how to use this booklet to complete their Course Selection Form on page 73. Students will have the opportunity to speak with senior teachers from each course area plus they will be able to discuss their choices with either their Dean, Senior House Leader, or a member of the Senior Leadership Team, to confirm the programme of study that meets their future needs. We have grouped courses into units of work. Each half-year course is worth 1 unit of work and a full-year course is worth 2 units of work. At NCEA Level 1 (Year 11): 1. Students have compulsory English. 2. Students have compulsory Mathematics. 3. Students have compulsory Science or AgriScience. 4. Students have to select six units of optional work. At NCEA Level 2 (Year 12): 1. Students select a compulsory English course. 2. Students have to select ten units of optional work. At NCEA Level 3 (Year 13): 1. Students have to select twelve units of optional work. 2. If students intend going to University it is important they check the school’s website for the requirements for University Entrance. This can occur at either the certificate or individual course level. Certificate Endorsement For an NCEA certificate to be endorsed with Excellence a student must gain 50 credits at Excellence at the level of the certificate or above. So, if a student has 50 Level 1 credits at Excellence they may have their Level 1 certificate endorsed with Excellence. Likewise, if a student gains 50 credits at Merit (or Merit and Excellence) at Level 1 their NCEA Level 1 certificate may be endorsed with Merit. Endorsement awards show on the Record of Achievement. Course Endorsement Course endorsement provides recognition for a student who has performed exceptionally well in an individual course. Students will gain an endorsement for a course if, in a single school year, they achieve: • 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence, and • at least 3 of these credits from externally assessed standards and 3 credits from internally assessed standards. Note, this does not apply to Physical Education, Religious Studies and level 3 Visual Arts. npbhs.school.nz or call 06 758 5399 5

Halls of Residence You need to apply for a hostel, halls of residence or residential college even before you are accepted into a course at university or polytech. Applications need to be made as early as August the year before you plan to study, and accommodation offers are generally made to prospective students in October, even before NCEA exams start. It is better to apply and secure a room rather than delay and take your chances on long waiting lists. Applications require a reference from your school as well as all your other details, and it’s important that you know this has been done and can accompany your application. When universities or polytechnics are looking If you don’t get in the first time at your application, they get a confidential around, don’t give up. Vocational Pathways What are the Vocational Pathways? The Vocational Pathways provide new ways to achieve NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 and develop pathways that progress to further study, training and employment. Achieving NCEA Level 2 is the foundation for success in further education and the world of work. Level 3 builds upon this through shared opportunities across school, tertiary, and industry training. The Vocational Pathways provide a framework for students to show how their learning and achievement is valued in the workplace by aligning learning to the skills needed for industry. The six Vocational Pathways are: The six Vocational Pathways improve the relevance of learning for students by indicating how their learning and achievement is valued by broad sectors of the workforce. Each has been colour-coded for ease of recognition to help students and teachers plan study pro- grammes. Government, industry, and educational representatives selected a range of Level 1 and 2 achievement and unit standards that they believed provide a curriculum foundation in each Vocational Pathway. These are known as Recommended standards. At Level 2, an additional category has been given to some of the Recommended standards, known as Sector-Related standards. These are standards that are closely related to the Vocational Pathway and require development of skills from, or direct experience in, an industry setting. The make-up of the pathways is important when young people are planning to achieve a Vocational Pathways Award. At Level 3, achievement standards and Levels 3–7 qualifications have been mapped to the Vocational Pathways. npbhs.school.nz or call 06 758 5399 9
