She’s found out that a good thing about this recipe is that it can be varied in many different ways. “I like that,” Jane says and added, “If you make it, use your imagination and adjust the recipe to the way you think it would taste good, adding different ingre- dients. ” She says that it is good on baked potatoes, as a spread on crackers and also on toast – or use your imagination! Jane and her husband, Steve, met while students in college at Hesston, Ks, and where each was enrolled in pottery classes. After their mar- riage, the Frys settled in Elk Falls and in 1976 opened the Elk Falls Pottery Shop which they still own and operate. Noah was presented his certificate by General Manager Penny Coy of Good News. pic goes here Noah is the son of Robert and Kim Osburn. His mother said that he has had riding lessons and enjoyed learning to ride. He was aware that the horse would be awarded to someone at the Cookoff and he really wanted it so that he would have a horse of his own. She said that he is very grateful to Dr. Eileen for the horse. It seems like it was meant to be as the Osburns will be moving outside of Tyro and Noah will have room to keep the horse at his home. Noah likes to cook and entered Raspberry Hot Wings in the Cookoff. Thanks to everyone who entered the Good News Cookoff Contest! Your continued interest is much appreciated. Page 4 23rd Annual Good News Cookbook Judges of Cookoff Contest Brought Years of Experience The six judges for the 2013 Good News Cookoff Contest have a combined total of many years of experience in cooking for the public. Patty Anderson of Caney has been judge in ev- ery Cook Off except for one year. She and her husband Richard had a catering business for many years, but recently retired. Lila Leonard and her late husband, Bud, built, owned and operated the Red Maple Restaurant in Caney for many years. Before that they had owned the Caney Food Bank as well as the Tastee Freeze. Lila is now retired from her many years in the food business. Jo Smith owns and operates the Dearing Drive- In in Dearing, Ks. Many people enjoy eating the homecooking served there as well as the weekly specials. Meals are enjoyed in a relaxed atmo- sphere. Judges are seen deliberating on who will be named winner. Bake at 350 degrees uncovered for 1 hour or until nicely browned. Homemade Authentic Mexican Food 620.306.6100 Finalist Secret Ingredient Chocolate Chip Cookies Melinda Carr Coffeyville, KS please place 1 cup real butter, softened 1 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup white sugar 2 eggs 3 oz pkg instant vanilla pudding mix 1 tsp vanilla arvest 1 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp salt 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour 1/4 12 oz pkg semi sweet chocolate chips Mix butter and sugars together until creamy. Add eggs 1 at a time and mix well. Add pudding mix and vanilla. In another bowl, mix pc together the flour, baking soda and salt and add to wet ingredients. Mix until all are well combined. Add chocolate chips. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Closer to 10 minutes if you want them soft. Hint: You can change the flavor of the cookie by using a different flavor of pudding mix. If you haven't guessed, the secret ingredient is the pudding mix. Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread and pumpkin pie. ~Jim Davis
23rd Annual Good News Cookbook Page 7 Frosting Finalist 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar Yummy Brunch Cinnamon Roll 1 Tbsp butter Joyce Ayers 1/2 tsp vanilla Altoona, KS Approx 6 Tbsp milk 2 loaves Rhodes frozen bread dough Mix together and drizzle over roll. Wonderful! Everyone loves 3/4 cup brown sugar this. So easy to make. The convenience of preparing the roll the 3/4 cup sugar night before baking makes for a quick, easy, wonderfully gooey 1 1/2 Tbsp cinnamon breakfast or brunch! 1 stick butter, melted 1/2 cup chopped pecans, optional Snickers Cheesecake Bars Wax paper Connie Riley 13x9 inch cake pan Edna, Ks Thaw bread loaves and cut each loaf into 4 sections. Mix sugar, 20 Oreo cookies brown sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl. Roll each section 5 Tbsp butter, melted into a 12 inch rope. Cover counter with large sheet of wax paper 2 8-oz pkgs cream cheese, softened to room temperature and place a row of sugar mixture in the center of paper. Dip one 1 lg egg dough rope into melted butter and roll in sugar mixture on wax 1/4 cup sugar paper until coated. Starting in the center of the pan coil the 2 tsp vanilla dough rope around and tuck end of rope under the coils. 13 fun size or 20 bite size or 3 lg Snickers bars Continue dipping the dough ropes in butter and rolling in sugar 1/3 cup milk chocolate chips mixture and coiling the ropes around the starting center coil until Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Page 8 23rd Annual Good News Cookbook Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras Pull A Part King Cake Sugar Free Pineapple Pie With Peanut Crust JoAnn Perry Ralene Davis Cherryvale, KS 36 Rhodes dinner rolls, thawed Cedar Vale, KS 1 cup brown sugar Crust 2 1/2 tsp cinnamon 3/4 cup shelled, roasted salted peanuts 1 stick butter, softened 3/4 cup flour 2 Tbsp milk 5 Tbsp butter Frosting Remove the skins from the peanuts. Place peanuts in the food Drizzle 1 lb of powdered sugar and enough milk to make sugar processor and process until peanuts are finely chopped. 23rd Annual Good News Cookbook Page 9 Caramel Apple Cupcakes Lemon Dream Cake Gabrielle Osburn Deborah Sandoval Tyro, KS Independence, KS 1 box French Vanilla cake mix 1 pkg (about 18 oz) butter recipe yellow cake mix, plus ingredients 1 can lemon pie filling to prepare mix 1 tub lemon flavored frosting, thawed 1 cup chopped dried apples 8 oz container of Cool Whip, thawed Caramel frosting Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare cake as directed on Chopped pecans box. Spray 9x13 inch pan with cooking spray. Pour cake batter Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line 24 standard 2-1/2 inch muffin in pan.
