PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES, CCMH Halifax CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR MASSAGE THERAPISTS CCMH Halifax offers a variety of Professional Development Courses ONLINE allowing therapists across the country to avoid the cost of travel and accommodation, providing an affordable option for gaining credits. These courses are an excellent opportunity for therapists to revisit the science or lecture-based curriculum of their massage therapy education, or perhaps take a new course that was not offered as part of their diploma program. All CCMH Halifax Online Professional Development Courses incorporate evaluation methods which participants must successfully complete prior to obtaining a course certificate. Evaluations are typically in the form of quizzes or tests and a final exam, but may also include assignments. Successful completion is defined by achieving a minimum grade of 70% overall. The grading scheme is outlined at the beginning of each course. A certificate of completion and course tuition receipt will be sent out to each successful participant. How to register for and complete an online course through CCMH Halifax: 1. Browse the course descriptions below and choose the course you wish to take. 2. Complete a CCMH CE Course Registration Form. (Forms are obtained by contacting Jenn Stuart at jenns@collegeofmassage.com) 3. Send in your completed application along with payment to Sheri Paris at FAOHalifax@collegeofmassage.com or by fax 902.832.1077. 4. Once payment is confirmed, you will receive an email from CCMH Halifax with your username, password, and a link to the website. 5. Courses are self-explanatory. All lectures, links, and forums are online. All testing is performed online. 6. Most courses allow you to work at your own pace. A deadline may be suggested if circumstances warrant. 7. Once you have completed your course, notify Sheri Paris at faohalifax@collegeofmassage.com and a certificate of completion will be sent to the address you provide. 8. Please note, there are no refunds given for Online CEU courses registered for. For courses never started, we can offer a credit that can be put towards feature Online CEU courses. ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY II The first section of the course covers the physiology of stress, heat and energy balance, thermoregulation, cardiac muscle and the cardiac conduction system, ECG, cardiac cycle, cardiac output and regulation of heart rate. The second section of the course covers shock, anatomy of the urinary system and renal physiology, including glomerular filtration and principles of renal transport. Skeletal muscles of the body are considered by region; these muscles are described according to origin, insertion, action and innervations. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES, CCMH Halifax Hippocratic principle of “do no harm”, the principle of beneficence and autonomy as the foundation of ethical conduct. We will also explore the basic elements of ethical theories and the relationship between law and ethics. The second part of this course will look at the specific application of the ethical principle of respect for persons in the context of the ethical and legal requirements to obtain informed consent, ensure patient privacy and confidentiality, provide fairness and equity in the delivery of healthcare services and maintain appropriate professional boundaries. Students will also be introduced to a model for decision-making that will facilitate their efforts to work through ethical issues in the context of health care practice. Finally, this course will also serve to familiarize students with health regulation (RHPA, the Massage Therapy Act and the Health Care Consent Act), relevant to the practice of massage therapy in Ontario. The curriculum of this course is typically covered in 45 hours of classroom lecture. FULL SEMINAR SERIES: Professional Practice* PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE 1 Professional Practice is designed to introduce students to the professional role and commitment of Massage Therapists as regulated healthcare professionals. This course will focus on developing the student’s ability to understand the professional role and commitment and meet basic entry to practice standards in the area of Ethics and Professionalism. Students are introduced to fundamental communication and inter- personal relationship skills which will be required of them as regulated healthcare professionals. Specifically it assists students in developing both oral and written communication skills including active listening, non-verbal communication and conflict resolution skills essential to professional communication. *Professional Practice (PP) courses have replaced Professional Development (PD) courses in the CCMH Massage Therapy Diploma Program. Both PD and PP courses will continue to be offered as Online Continuing Education Courses. FULL SEMINAR SERIES: Systemic Anatomy & Pathophysiology* SYSTEMIC ANATOMY & PATHOPHYSIOLOGY 1 Systemic Anatomy & Pathophysiology 1 is the first course in the SAP series which combines the body’s systems anatomy, physiology, and relevant pathologies. SAP 1 introduces students to the human body’s systems from an organizational levels approach. It begins with exploration of the levels of human organization including chemical, cellular, tissues, organs, and organ systems. A foundational approach to pathology is taken with an introduction to the language of pathology, the process of inflammation, and an understanding of cancer. There is an emphasis on the various types of connective tissue, especially fascia and bone, including the pathological conditions involving each. FULL SEMINAR SERIES: Systemic Anatomy & Pathophysiology* NEUROANATOMY & PATHOPHYSIOLOGY 1 Neuroanatomy & Pathophysiology 1 provides students with an overview of nervous tissue, including structure, electrical signals and synapses. General pathologies, regeneration and repair of nervous tissue are also discussed. The peripheral nervous system is introduced beginning with spinal nerve anatomy and distribution. Major nerves of the cervical, brachial, lumbar, and sacral plexuses are explored, including their origins, pathway, innervations, and pathologies. The cranial nerves are studied with respect to their origins, pathway, innervations, and pathologies.
