EU’s connectivity performance
• FTTP (fibre to the premises) coverage (2019): 17.5 % vs. to 33.5 % total
• NGA coverage (2019): 59.3 % compared to 85.8 % total
• 5G coverage mid 2020: 14%
• 5G readiness: 39%
• 4G Mobile internet take up: 71%
Risks:
- deployment costs unaffordable for private sector
- mismatch coverage/take up (e.g. for lack of demand, skills, …)
Targets for 5G:
- rural areas will lag significantly behind, especially for standalone 5G (due to
market failures, lack of proper backhaul,…) 2025: Uninterrupted 5G coverage
in all urban areas and all major
terrestrial transport paths
The two most important instrument to reach the targets are:
a) publicly supported infrastructure investments and 2030 (Digital Decade): 5G in all
populated areas
b) sharing of knowledge to implement these investments
