A NEW DIMENSION OF CARE Advancing dementia care will continue as a key focus for HammondCare and is a priority service area in our ‘Next Chapter’ strategic plan People living with dementia are profoundly impacted by their environment. Research has proven that they enjoy a better quality of life, and need fewer hospitalisations, when they receive relationship-based care in a small domestic environment rather than an institutional approach. That’s why HammondCare is constructing a $6.9 million project to expand our existing 90-bed residential service for dementia-specific care for residents in the Illawarra. CEO Mike Baird and Sean Adopting the very best evidence-based design, two new eight-bed cottages at A haven of peace for Sean Shone Avenue in Horsley will offer warm and welcoming living spaces that incorporate Sean Kelly is 55 and an advocate for the cues to tell residents where they are, what relationship-based dementia care provided at HammondCare Horsley. Sean said his diagnosis of dementia 10 years ago came as a relief, not a shock. “Having the diagnosis of FTD at a young age is not ideal, but I feel as though I’m living the best life possible. I’m happy and content where I am, and I believe this has helped to keep my moods and mind on an even keel,” he said. Sean shares his journey with FTD in a book, Sean’s Story, co-written with Deborah Moore. In the book released in September last year, Sean gives his top five tips for living well with younger onset dementia and FTD. These tips are: chase the right diagnosis; find a place to live that fits you; be cared about, not just cared for; stay connected to the community; and remember that a happy heart is a happy mind. If you’d like a copy of Sean’s book, you can download it free on HammondCare’s Dementia Centre website under the Knowledge Hub/Dementia and Aged Care section at: Plans for HammondCare Horsley expansion www.dementiacentre.com/resources
