Commencement Speaker Dr. Tabatha Parker is a naturopathic doctor and the Executive Director of the Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine (AIHM), a global community of holistic and integrative health professionals. Parker has received a variety of awards and honorary degrees, including 2015 Physician of the Year from the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), and 2011 Visionary of the Year by UTNE Reader. She was founding co-secretary general of the World Naturopathic Federation, worked with the World Health Organization on the WHO Benchmarks for Training in Naturopathy. Parker led an international Tabatha Parker, N.D. service-relief organization for over a decade, and her clinical work in Nicaragua focused on women’s Executive Director, Academy of Integrative empowerment and cervical cancer screening. Her work with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Health & Medicine (AIHM) aided the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health to fully implement the WHO Traditional Medicine Strategy 2014 – 2023. Parker sits on the steering committee of the Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health. As an activist for the integrative health & medicine global health community she advocates for holistic healthcare as a human right and works for parity for healthcare providers and full access for all patients to traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine.
Appointment of Professor Emeriti Anne Mackereth joined Northwestern Health Sciences University as a librarian in 2001 when her interest in complementary medicine led her to explore the open position. After 12 years in the librarian role, she became the Director of Library Services in 2013. In 2015, Ms. Mackereth began coordinating book reviews for Doody’s, the leading health science subject collection advisor, enabling faculty reviewers to increase their scholarly activity. In response to student needs identified in the biannual library student satisfaction survey, under her leadership the library obtained soundproofing for its study rooms and three unique study PODs in 2018. She also coordinated the library’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, among many other accomplishments. Ms. Mackereth served the university in many ways, including as the faculty senate secretary, on the faculty affairs committee, Anne H. Mackereth, M.A. on the Provosts Cabinet, and as the university grievance officer for eight years. Ms. Mackereth also served as the Treasurer for the Chiropractic Library Collaboration. Ms. Mackereth earned her B.A. at the College of Saint Catherine, and her M.A. in Information Resources and Library Science at the University of Arizona. Of her time at NWHSU, Mackereth shared, “I began here feeling like a fish out of water and believing that I would only last a year. I missed my colleagues at MN/DOT terribly and wasn’t sure I could get that sense of camaraderie at Northwestern. During my 20 years at NWHSU, I found a great sense of satisfaction assisting students with library research, mentoring those I supervised, and being part of an institution focused on natural health care. I’ve made some lifelong friendships along the way, too.”
Academic Honors
Class Valedictorians COLLEGE OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS ACADEMIC REGALIA Amanda Noel Pipal + The design and heraldry of academic attire date back to approximately the Associate of Applied Science in Massage Therapy 12th century when universities were taking form. It is believed that the attire was the dress of a cleric because scholars had taken minor orders or vows. The William Jacob Colling * dress may have also served another purpose—it provided warmth. Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology Our graduates display their academic achievements by wearing hoods at the Muntadher Al-Jayashi + commencement along with gowns and caps. The colors of the hood represent Bachelor of Science in Human Biology the University and the felt of the hood symbolizes health care. Placing of the hood symbolizes entry of the candidate into the rights and responsibilities of COLLEGE OF ACUPUNCTURE AND CHINESE MEDICINE the profession. Juliet Elizabeth Winter - Master of Chinese Medicine It’s also customary for the University’s leadership to wear academic attire. This is an outward sign of bringing together students and privileged persons under Jessica Anne French + the same discipline.
