MESSAGE FROM THE CHANCELLOR All of us at Louisiana State University of Alexandria congratulate you for being one of our most resilient graduation classes in the history of our university. You’ve successfully reached an extremely important milestone that is the result of significant personal and family sacrifice, dedication, and hard work…so today we all celebrate your accomplishments. We are extremely excited and honored to be able to celebrate this Spring graduation face-to-face in our traditional venue at the Rapides Parish Coliseum. We all know this has been a tumultuous year for all of us; however, today our focus is on you, our dedicated LSUA students who stuck it out and did not allow significant obstacles to get in the way of your dreams! All of us have been amazed and inspired by the special resilience you have all exhibited dealing with the disruptions resulting from COVID-19, a tornado on campus, and two major hurricanes that disrupted classes and campus life. You are indeed a very special graduating class that will forever be remembered for achieving your goals even when facing all of these obstacles. We know that this is only the beginning of many accomplishments you will achieve throughout your lifetime. Our hope is that your experience at LSUA, and the degree you have earned, will enable you to reach your personal and career goals and at the same time help make the world a better place for us all! To the parents, grandparents, loved ones, supporters, and friends of our graduates, please accept our congratulations and thanks. We realize that these accomplishments would not have been possible without your tireless support. Please know that your encouragement throughout the years had a significant impact on making this day possible. We want to sincerely thank all of our students, families, and supporters who continue to believe in the high quality education provided by LSUA. We maintain a strong commitment to building a positive future for our students through outstanding faculty and staff, who remain dedicated to a quality university education. LSUA is committed to the long-term economic future of Central Louisiana, the State of Louisiana, the nation, and the world. In the years ahead, we pledge to continue to attract and educate a growing number of high-quality students like the outstanding graduates we celebrate here today. We look forward to hearing about your successes in the future and hope to engage with you through LSUA’s Alumni and Friends Association membership and related activities that support your university and its continuing mission. Please stay in touch and continue recommending your alma mater, LSUA, to potential students you meet and work with - we know alumni are our best recruiters! Again, congratulations to all of our graduates and their families, and best wishes into the future. Go Generals! Paul D. Coreil, Ph.D. LSUA Chancellor May 2021 4

THE ACADEMIC REGALIA CODE Guidelines with respect to academic regalia derive from traditions passed on since the Middle Ages. American universities agreed on a definite system in 1895 and devised an official Code of Academic Dress. In 1932, the American Council on Education presented a revised code which for the most part governs the style of academic dress today. Black is the recommended color for all academic gowns. Bachelor’s and master’s gowns are untrimmed. Doctor’s gowns are faced with black velvet or the other color associated with the degree with three chevrons across the sleeves. The Chancellor’s gown is faced with four chevrons across the sleeves. The hoods differ in length for the three degrees, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s and are lined with the official colors of the college or university conferring the degree, usually with one color forming a chevron pattern over the other. Hoods are edged and bound with velvet of the color appropriate for the degree and lined with the official colors of the college or university conferring the degree. THE COLORS ASSOCIATED WITH THE DIFFERENT SUBJECTS ARE AS FOLLOWS: Apricot Nursing Maize Agriculture Brown Fine Arts, Architecture Olive Green Pharmacy Citron Social Work Orange Engineering Copper Economics Peacock Blue Public Administration Crimson Journalism Pink Music Dark Blue Philosophy Purple Law Drab Business Russet Forestry Gray Veterinary Medicine Sage Physical Education Green Medicine Salmon Pink Public Health Golden Yellow Science Scarlet Theology Lemon Yellow Library Science Silver Gray Speech Light Blue Education White Art, Letters, Humanities Lilac Dentistry 8
DEGREE WITH HONORS At each commencement, the University Medal for “Highest Academic Achievement” is awarded to the graduate receiving an associate degree and to the graduate receiving a baccalaureate degree with the highest GPA, provided that more than 50 percent of the total hours attempted in pursuit of the degree have been earned at Louisiana State University of Alexandria. Graduates receiving baccalaureate degrees may receive their degrees summa cum laude, magna cum laude, or cum laude. The determination for these designations is based on the student’s grade point average. Degrees are awarded summa cum laude to students whose grade point averages are within the 3.90 to 4.0 range. In order for a degree to be awarded magna cum laude, the grade point average must be within the 3.70 to 3.89 range. Degrees are awarded cum laude to students whose grade point averages are between 3.50 and 3.69. Students who are awarded their degrees with honors must also have satisfied all additional requirements imposed by their college or department. Students graduating with honors are recognized at commencement by wearing honors cords. Students graduating summa cum laude wear gold cords. Those graduating magna cum laude wear silver cords; cum laude graduates wear white cords. GAMMA BETA PHI - HONOR GRADUATES Gamma Beta Phi is a national collegiate honor and service organization. Students must have an overall 3.0 grade point average to be invited to become members. The gold satin stole worn by graduates signifies that they are members in good standing. THE MACE A mace is the traditional university symbol of educational authority and institutional identity and is presented at formal university rituals and traditions, such as commencement ceremonies. The LSUA mace is forty-eight inches tall and weighs approximately ten pounds. It is crafted of wood from a fallen live oak tree native to the Louisiana State University of Alexandria campus and solid brass. The brass spacers that collectively form the shaft are engraved with milestone dates in the history of the university. The mace is topped with a four-sided acorn, calling attention to the fiftieth anniversary in 2010, the service of Louisiana State University of Alexandria to Louisiana and Central Louisiana in particular, desirable attributes imparted in graduates of Louisiana State University of Alexandria and embossed figures depicting “One World – Diverse – Intertwined.” The acorn is crowned with the official LSUA oak tree seal with the historical blue and gold banner insignia. Alexandria resident and master craftsman Glen Armand crafted and donated the mace in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Louisiana State University of Alexandria. The LSUA mace was first presented to the faculty, staff and students at the closing commencement exercises of the fiftieth anniversary, December 16, 2010. 9
