Book club Review Thrillers to get the adrenalin going Two books ... four gripping James Patterson stories One new thriller from James Patterson is great. When there are three ... bonus! The House Next Door contains a trio of gripping chillers – each in print for the first time. The House Next Door (with Susan DiLallo) revolves around married mother of four, Laura Sherman, who was thrilled when her new neighbour invited her on some errands. But a few quick tasks became a long lunch – and now things could go too far with a man who isn’t what he seems. In The Killer’s Wife (with Max DiLallo), six girls have gone missing and Detective McGrath knows the only way to find them is to get close to the suspect’s wife. Maybe too close! In The Witnesses (with Brendan DuBois), the Sanderson family has been forced into hiding after one of them stumbled upon a criminal plot. Or so they think. No one will answer their ques- tions. And the terrifying truth may come too late. That’s your weekend reading sorted! Penguin, R290. Winter gardening We’ve put together our top garden tasks and tips for this month. This book’s title says it all! Now in an updated second edition, it provides a clear understanding of how trees are constructed and what to look for when identifying a tree. The book is divided into two parts: Part 1 describes and clearly illustrates the different parts of a tree and their role in tree iden- tification. Part 2 features a key to 43 tree groups, based on an easy-to- observe stem and leaf features. Penguin Random House, R290. Advice from the pro: Ennis Garden Centre’s Sonja du Plessis offers the following advice: Mulch in winter to protect against frost damage. It will keep roots warm, moist and also adds nutrients to the soil. Choosing the right mulch is essential. Compost is a excellent mulching medium, but you can also use bark chips, nut shells, pebbles and gravel. Avoid over-mulching – a 10cm layer of mulch is sufficient. Do not dig the mulch into the soil, and remove excess mulch from around the stems of young plants to prevent stem-rot. Mulching also improves weed control, soil structure and drainage. Indoor/ patio plant … Anthuriums are virtually indestructible and almost never without flowers. We love soft pink, the colour of a flamingo, which is the other name for the anthurium. Plants like a warm room and bright light, but not direct sunlight. Let the soil dry out moderately between watering. If the leaves turn yellow (but not brown and withered), this may be a sign of overwatering. Anthurium plants are long- lasting indoor plants that also help to keep the air clean, especially in winter. The heart-shaped flowers and glossy leaves add a tropical touch. Just pop the plant into a simple, elegant container for instant décor. Details: Visit www.plantimex.co.za.
