We are ready for the challenges and successes that lay ahead in 2021. We leave behind a challenging year and I am proud of the way we came together to mitigate risk to our stakeholders and continue to offer pathways to bright futures for our students. My deepest thanks go out to all of the community partners who supported us in that endeavor. Luckily, CMC has grit baked into its DNA! CMC was founded and raised in hardy, innovative and proud mountain towns who have weathered challenges throughout their existence. Leadville is renowned for its resilience and at the campus we work every day to mirror that culture. We are excited to forge forward in service to the community while putting safety first in everything we do. We are committed to fulfilling our mission to serve you with quality educational programming and to maintain a campus that is safe and welcoming. I am proud to say that we are able to offer a majority of our classes with a face to face learning component this spring. We’ve really engaged all of our innovation skills to pull this off with small group learning and utilizing the larger spaces we are lucky to have on campus. In addition, our amazing faculty has gotten really great at teaching outside. So grab a puffy and a hat because nothing will stop us! We also rely on the amazing online learning school that serves the entire college region, and an even broader offering of classes in the virtual format are listed inside. We hope you have fun shopping for classes, reading about some of our amazing students, faculty and staff and planning your next career move. You may also be a community member who isn’t in the market for engaging in a class. Remember that we maintain hiking, fat biking, cross country skiing and mountain biking trails. We hope to see you on campus working on your physical health. Onward! FALL 2019 LEADVILLE FACULTY SPOTLIGHT Monia Haselhorst, PhD Ecosystem Science and Management, Faculty Monia joined the Ecosystem Science and Management Program (previously the Natural Resource Management Program) in the fall 2019. Her goal as an educator and mentor is to engage her students in learning and for it to be a positive component of their undergraduate experience - not only as a stepping stone to a degree, but also to enrich their everyday life. To accomplish this goal, Monia’s courses are experiential, highly interactive, and focus on the student’s participation in discussions and team activities that require them to think about real-world problems in a collaborative setting. Being a teacher is very rewarding to Monia and she genuinely enjoys working with students, and seeing them develop knowledge and grow as people. When students take her courses, she wants them to feel comfortable asking questions, be inspired and connected to the content, and develop ownership over their personal learning. Monia is convinced that when students enjoy a subject and feel motivated to participate in class, they gain the desire to learn as well as to apply their new-found knowledge in new situations. Moreover, when active and engaged learning is incorporated into classes, it tends to close achievement gaps for underrepresented minority students, women, and first-generation students. STAFF SPOTLIGHT David Negrete Facilities Manager III David Negrete is a Leadville native, graduating from Lake County High School in 2003. He has worked in the Vail Valley for 15 years following graduation being a houseman on the weekends to working for the Town of Avon as a heavy equipment/plow operator. Wanting to learn more, David became a hot tub and pool technician for Western Fireplace Supply. In 2010, the construction in Vail Valley came to a halt, which lead David to working as the Night engineer at Westin Riverfront Resort, where he quickly moved into the role of Assistant Director of Engineering. In 2014, David applied for the Maintenance Mechanic position at Colorado Mountain College – Leadville Campus. David was promoted to Facilities Maintenance Manager in 2016, where his role now includes being responsible for the maintenance and safety for buildings and grounds at the Leadville, Chaffee County Center, and Salida campuses. David loves to ride his motorcycle, coach for his two boys’ sports team, spend time with his wife and high school sweetheart Davett, and spend time outdoors. David is an instrumental part of the day-to-day operations of campus life, from making sure the buildings are warm to permits for building construction are being followed to the roads being cleared of the massive amount of snow to following the current protocol for Covid-19 cleaning and sanitizing, he keeps the campuses running. FALL 2019 LEADVILLE STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Johnathan Rogers Getting closer to graduation, it is interesting to look back on how I ended up at CMC and my experience so far. Originally, I heard about CMC from a friend who attended the Spring Valley location. When I was first looking at attending myself, I planned to go to Spring Valley to pursue the Outdoor Education program. After visiting the Leadville location, I changed my mind to pursue the more encompassing Outdoor Recreational Leadership program. The idea of working in the outdoors at a professional level, and learning from instructors experienced in the field made me excited to get started. It has been a great experience learning from teachers who truly enjoy the content. Getting hands on experience in the backcountry really set the tone for how much I was going to enjoy all the classes here on campus. The small community has made sure it is possible to be an individual instead of a number in some stats somewhere. Overall, the community of students and staff on campus is my favorite part of CMC. CMC has set me up for a successful future already, and I am excited to start my final semester in the ORL program. COLORADOMTN.EDU/LEADVILLE 13

FALL 2019 LEADVILLE STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Jessica Fisher Colorado Mountain College is the ultimate dream school for those interested in outdoor recreation. However, I did not move here for outdoor adventure or a winter wonderland, at first. I moved from Kalamazoo, Michigan five years ago to be closer to my brother after a close family member passed away. I was working full-time in Michigan and going to school part- time for a degree in teaching. When I moved to Leadville, I saw that Colorado Mountain College was offering a Bachelor's degree in teaching. What an amazing opportunity, I could finish my Bachelor’s in teaching right here in Leadville. When I investigated further, I decided the Bachelor’s in Business Administration fit my work experience and interests more. I was able to transfer all my credits over and start working towards an Associate’s of Business, which I recently completed all the courses this last spring semester during quarantine. Since I started attending classes at CMC, I have found the largest benefit is that it provides a small student to teacher ratio, allowing much more time for one-on- one and small group learning versus classes with fifty or more, connecting less than you could in an online course. This benefit has been a huge reason for my continued progress. I have been given the opportunity to participate in work-study at CMC, which has been full of learning opportunities. One of the positions put me right in the outdoor recreational side of things, assisting in managing the gear room. It helped me to get to know the culture of many students at CMC and why they are here. I have grown a newfound love for the outdoors since living here, attending classes, and becoming a part of the Leadville community. Another work-study position was also a huge steppingstone for me because it related to my degree, as I gained the chance to work in the Adminstrative office. The experience taught me all the ins and outs of being an administrative assistant and was an amazing opportunity to be able to learn about my degree hands-on. When I realized I enjoyed business and finished the intro-level courses, I found out that Accounting was my calling. Since then, I have adjusted my degree with an emphasis in Accounting, all while I am working working a full-time job. This little bit of knowledge helped me get hired in an entry-level position at a financial institution, which is also a milestone in completing my goals. I plan to finish my degree in the next couple of years and will be taking the CPA Exam in hopes to become a CPA. I owe a ton of thanks to the leaders at CMC because they are the reason I have gained focus in my educational goals, allowing me to envision my future. COLORADOMTN.EDU/LEADVILLE 17
