CHAPTER AWARDS CHAPTER EXCELLENCE AWARDS Excellence awards recognize chapters for significant accomplishments and/or innovative efforts in each specialty area. A chapter on elevated status is eligible for Excellence Awards. Each year, a collegiate chapter is selected to be honored with the following awards: • Excellence in Operations, • Excellence in Risk Management, • Excellence in Member Experience, • Excellence in Finance/Housing, • Excellence in Community Relations, • Excellence in Inclusion (beginning in 2022), • Excellence in Recruitment; and • Excellence in Alumnae Advisory Committee (AAC) Service 2021 Excellence Award Consideration For the 2021 calendar year, any chapter may self-nominate for an Excellence Award in the above specialty areas, with the exception of AAC service which is nominated by the Regional Team. Chapters may submit their Excellence Award nominations through an online submission program called SmarterSelect accessed at pibetaphi.org/awards by February 15, 2022. 2021 award winners will be announced by the Fraternity in mid-2022. Note that the Excellence Award for Inclusion will be considered starting in 2022. Inclusion accomplishments from 2021 should be included in a chapter’s submission for the Excellence in Community Relations Award. 2022 Excellence Award Consideration Chapters meeting all “Exceeding Expectations” standards for a specialty area will be eligible to self-nominate for the Excellence Award in that area. The Excellence in AAC service will be nominated by the Regional Team. Chapters may submit their 2022 Excellence Award nominations through the SmarterSelect online application link that will be promoted in early 2023 at pibetaphi.org/awards. 2022 award nomination applications will be due in spring 2023 (date to be announced) and winners will be announced in mid- 2023. BALFOUR CUP The Balfour Cup is awarded annually to Pi Beta Phi’s most accomplished and overall premier collegiate chapter. Balfour Cup nominees for 2021 will be selected by Regional Teams based on end of year submissions to the Regional Team. Grand Council selects the top award winner and runner ups from the regional nominees. Balfour Cup winners are recognized during biennial conventions or through a special online announcement in years when there is not a convention. There is no additional application (aside from a 2021 year-end submission to the Regional Team) to be considered as a 2021 Balfour Cup nominee. Information on being considered for the 2022 Balfour Cup will be available later in 2022. INDIVIDUAL AWARDS INDIVIDUAL SCHOLARSHIP RECOGNITION The Vice President Member Experience (VPME) and Director Academics (DA) may use the Scholarship Achievement Certificate template to generate certificates for individual members who achieved a 4.0 GPA during the previous calendar year. The Pi Beta Phi Scholarship Achievement Certificate is available in the Resource Library. INDIVIDUAL AWARDS All chapter members are eligible for the individual awards given by Pi Beta Phi internationally. The nominations for these awards are submitted electronically through an application called SmarterSelect. A link to the individual award applications can be found at pibetaphi.org/awards. All individual award nominations are to be submitted electronically by February 15. Each chapter is highly encouraged to recognize the achievements of their individual members by submitting nominations for these three awards every year. The following individual awards are given by Pi Beta Phi annually: Last Updated: January 2022 Page 3
Amy Burnham Onken (ABO) Award for Outstanding Scholarship and Campus and Community Leadership The award is named for Amy Burnham Onken, who served as Grand President from 1921 to 1952. Basis of Award: To recognize an initiated member in the senior class (December graduates are eligible) who has best lived up to the Pi Beta Phi qualities of excellent scholarship, outstanding campus participation and community service during her collegiate career. The nominee will have demonstrated leadership in significant campus activities and will have been recognized by others outside the chapter for her accomplishments. Her influence and leadership will have extended far beyond the chapter, reflecting someone who is going to have an impact on society in the future. Nomination Procedure: The Leadership and Nominating Committee (LNC) determines which senior to nominate for this award. Executive Council and AAC approve the nomination. The LNC compiles the nomination materials and the Chapter President (CP) fills out the award application, which can be found at pibetaphi.org/awards. The nominee for this award may not be the same as the Chapter Service Award or Jean Wirths Scott Leadership Award. Chapter Service Award for Outstanding Servant Leadership Basis of Award: To recognize an initiated member of the senior class (December graduates are eligible) who has demonstrated consistent and dedicated service to the chapter throughout their collegiate years with emphasis on service to the Fraternity, not to the school or community. Through servant leadership, the member has impacted chapter unity and achieved results in line with Fraternity values. The member may not have necessarily held a chapter office. Nomination Procedure: One nominee from each chapter is selected by a vote of AAC only. The AAC Chair fills out the award application, which can be found at pibetaphi.org/awards. The nominee for this award may not be the same as the Amy Burnham Onken Award or Jean Wirths Scott Leadership Award. Last Updated: January 2022 Page 4
Jean Wirths Scott Leadership Award for Outstanding Change Leadership The award is named in honor of Jean Wirths Scott, Grand President Emerita. Basis of Award: To recognize a junior or senior (December graduates are eligible) who has served on Executive Council (as defined in the Constitution and Statutes) or the local College Panhellenic Council and has served in an exemplary manner in the performance of their duties. Specifically, the member has implemented changes and improvements in the chapter or the local College Panhellenic Council. Nomination Procedure: The LNC, in consultation with the Executive Council and AAC, determines if there are candidates for this award in the chapter. The LNC then makes the determination on whom to nominate. The Executive Council and AAC approve the nomination. The LNC then compiles the nomination materials and the CP fills out the award application, which can be found at pibetaphi.org/awards. The nominee for this award may not be the same as the Amy Burnham Onken Award or Chapter Service Award. Carol Inge Warren Award for Outstanding AAC Advisor This award is named in honor of Carol Inge Warren, North Carolina Beta, former Grand Vice President Finance, Grand Vice President Membership, Foundation Trustee, Fraternity Housing Corporation Board Member and National Panhellenic Conference Delegate. Basis of Award: To recognize an Advisor who has shown outstanding mentorship and coaching to a collegiate chapter and its officers. Nomination Procedure: The Executive Council, in consultation with their predecessors on Executive Council, determines an annual candidate for this award; the CP compiles the nomination materials and fills out the award application, which can be found at pibetaphi.org/awards, with details about how this AAC Advisor has gone above and beyond to support the chapter. Silver Slipper Award – Excellence of a Vice President Finance/Housing This award is named in honor of past Grand Treasurer Olivia Smith Moore. It is named due to Mrs. Moore’s large collection of shoes, and she originally selected a silver slipper for the award, which is now given in the form of a charm to the winner. Basis of Award: To recognize a Vice President Finance/Housing (VPFH) who has demonstrated excellence in their role. Be specific about how the leader has not only met the minimum requirements of the position (e.g., giving financial updates to the Executive Council and chapter on a monthly basis, reviewing and maintaining good records, etc.), but also how the member exceeds expectations in innovative ways while modeling Pi Beta Phi values. Nomination Procedure: The Executive Council, in consultation with AAC, determines if the previous VPFH is a candidate for this award. The Executive Council and AAC approve the nomination; the CP compiles the nomination materials and fills out the award application, which can be found at pibetaphi.org/awards. MONTHLY CHAPTER EVALUATION 2022 MONTHLY CHAPTER EVALUATION Each Pi Beta Phi chapter is required to submit a Monthly Chapter Evaluation (MCE) to the Regional Team by the 10th of each month when school is in session. The purpose of the MCE is to provide a clear roadmap outlining Pi Beta Phi’s expectations of collegiate chapters and to encourage meaningful reflection of chapter accomplishments on a regular basis. In addition, the MCE is used to provide feedback on opportunities within the chapter and to determine which chapters will be recognized through Fraternity awards at the end of the calendar year. The MCE is completed using the template provided by Headquarters for your chapter. Instructions and an overview of chapter expectations are included in the first three tabs, followed by a tab for each month to be completed when school is in session. Only the Chapter President and Vice Presidents complete the MCE on behalf of their entire specialty team. For each month and standard under the “Meeting Expectations” category, there is a prompt for the Executive Council member to answer. Prompts should be answered in a few meaningful sentences, when applicable. If there are not accomplishments to share for a particular expectation, that should be noted. Responses should reflect the work of the previous month, unless the prompt states otherwise. For example, in March you will report on accomplishments from February. Questions for the Regional Team should not be included in the MCE, but instead should be emailed to the appropriate regional counterpart copying your AAC counterpart. Chapters will complete the template with the previous month’s achievements by the 5 th for AAC review and Regional Teams will conduct their review starting on the 10 th of each month. The Regional Team may or may not provide comments during their review. Last Updated: January 2022 Page 7
