THORNTON FESTIVALS & EVENTS – WHERE NEIGHBORS COME TOGETHER HOW IT ALL BEGAN In 1996, the Thornton City Council wanted to create a unique and special event to celebrate the city’s 40th anniversary. City staff produced a special event free to the public that would encourage neighbors to come together to celebrate our community. Twenty years later, this event, known as Thorntonfest, has grown into one of the most popular events in the north metro area and includes entertainment stages, a Car Show, Paw Fest featuring pet and animal-related exhibits, 125 exhibitor booths, 75 crafters, children’s amusements and lots of family fun. Not only does the city host Thorntonfest attracting over 50,000 people, but it also hosts two other major festivals and several special events throughout the year. CELEBRATING CULTURAL DIVERSITY In addition to Thorntonfest, Harvest Fest happens in September in the south part of town celebrating the history and cultural diversity of Thornton. Harvest Fest includes a children’s Fishing Derby, a Chili Cook-off, and a Skate Park competition as well as local entertainment and cultural dance acts, Hispanic Heritage Celebration, and children’s attractions. HOLIDAY DESTINATION In December, everyone looks forward to WinterFest, a holiday-themed “Santa’s Village” created on the Carpenter Park Fields with miniature buildings, an ice skating rink, Santa’s House, Ice Sculpting Displays, nearly 450 lit trees, local choirs and a unique winter fireworks show creating a festive and magical experience sure to fill everyone with the holiday spirit. A popular area of WinterFest is the Wonderland Woods where businesses, organizations and community members compete in the Community Tree Decorating Contest. Participants creatively decorate a Noble Fir with their own special holiday touch or by incorporating their business theme. Because there is no other event like this anywhere in the surrounding area, this event is quickly becoming a holiday tradition for families across the metro area. CELEBRATING OUR NATION’S INDEPENDENCE Thornton is definitely the place for neighbors and families to gather on the Fourth of July. Attendees bring their blankets, Frisbees and picnics anxiously awaiting nightfall and the spectacular fireworks show. The crowd is entertained throughout the evening and into the night by walk-around performers, live bands, nighttime sky divers and a fabulous fireworks show. FUN-FILLED SPECIAL EVENTS Thornton also hosts several smaller, special events throughout the year primarily geared towards children and families including the Easter Egg Scramble and Trunk or Treat. In addition, Paws for a Dip is a fun way to enjoy the “dog days of summer” giving friendly dogs the opportunity to play in City Pool after it has been closed to the public. Several other special events are held throughout the year in various places around town. There is truly something for everyone at the city of Thornton’s festivals and special events! Created to celebrate the underlying value of community and giving neighbors a place to gather and families to come together, these festivals and special events are some of what makes Thornton special. ‐2‐
WHY SHOULD YOU SPONSOR OUR EVENTS? THORNTON - DIVERSITY AND GROWTH Thornton is a diverse community with a strong commitment to quality of life and environmental issues. Located approximately 10 miles north of downtown Denver, the life in Thornton feels worlds apart from the hustle and bustle of city living and is a hub for a variety of fairs, festivals, events, artistic and cultural offerings. On May 26, 1956, Thornton was incorporated as a Colorado city with a population of 8,640 and an area of one square mile. Today, Thornton covers more than 31 square miles with a population of over 123,000 and is one of the fastest- growing cities in Colorado. The Denver Regional Council of Governments forecasts Thornton’s Regional Marketing Area as "The New Growth Capital of Metro Denver." SPONSORSHIP AND EVENT MARKETING IS THE FASTEST-GROWING MARKETING MEDIUM According to IEG, the sponsorship industry’s leading research and information source, changes in the economy, demographic shifts and the fragmentation of media have all contributed to sponsorship’s growth. Not to mention consumers are no longer paying attention to traditional media ads. Effective marketing is no longer tied to eyeballs but rather heartstrings. Companies are creating loyalty by tethering their products and services to the issues, events and organizations their customers care about. Our festivals are a great place to reinforce this commitment. SPONSORSHIP IS THE MOST DIRECT CHANNEL OF COMMUNICATION For companies looking for an alternative method to communicate their messages, sponsorship is the perfect environment. Festival and event sponsorship reaches people in an environment that matches their lifestyle rather than intrudes upon it. It is not a passive monologue that interrupts a TV show, or comes as a piece of mail that needs to be dealt with. Sponsorship speaks to the public, not at them, creating opportunities for two-way dialogue between you and your customers. WE WANT OUR EVENT TO WORK HARD FOR YOU All of our sponsorship opportunities are tailored to meet your specific goals. Our sponsorship proposals are developed to meet individual sponsor needs and want to make sure you reach your targeted audience and marketing goals. Creating positive brand experiences is the cornerstone of our sponsorship proposals. Your sponsorship of a Thornton event will provide you with an outstanding opportunity to engage consumers to experience your brand as well as tangibly underscore your commitment to add to the quality of life of your target customers. A FUN REASON TO GET OUT OF THE OFFICE Sponsorship is not an ends, but rather a marketing platform upon which to build. Activating your sponsorship is one of our top goals. This is really what gives your sponsorship legs. You should have as much fun at our event as our attendees and we will work hard to make sure that happens. We work with you to come up with some creative ways you can engage your potential customers to experience your brand. We want your association with our event to be unique, relevant and interactive with the attendees. WHERE ELSE CAN YOU GET YOUR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES IN FRONT OF 10-50,000 PEOPLE IN ONE DAY? There really is nothing like the face-to-face opportunity to promote your product or service to a desirable audience. The City of Thornton Festivals and Special Events provide the opportunity to place your product, image or service in the hands of thousands of potential customers. Dependable studies conclude that festivals have a measurable impact on consumer sales and brand awareness. And depending on your level of investment, your message will be seen during the festival’s promotional periods as well as on site. We target just about every demographic through a variety of media. SPONSORSHIPS HAVE A PROVEN RETURN ON INVESTMENT A recent study conducted by IEG concluded that 78% of sponsors agree that participating in festivals has a measureable impact on consumer sales of their product and that they provide the most conducive environment for experiential sampling. With companies spending approaching $20 billion dollars on sponsorships annually, it’s easy to understand that companies continue to see increased return on their sponsorship investments each year. We provide each of our sponsors with a post-event report detailing how your sponsorship was implemented and carried out so you can see how your investment worked for you at our event. ‐3‐
