ORDER OF SERVICE Welcome The Revd Prebendary Dr Brian Leathard Once in Royal David’s City Join in at home Solo All Once in royal David’s city And through all His wondrous childhood Stood a lowly cattle shed, He would honour and obey, Where a mother laid her baby Love and watch the lowly maiden, In a manger for His bed: In whose gentle arms He lay; Mary was that mother mild, Christian children all must be Jesus Christ her little child. Mild, obedient, good as He. All All He came down to earth from Heaven Not in that poor lowly stable, Who is God and Lord of all, With the oxen standing by, And His shelter was a stable, We shall see Him – but in Heaven, And His cradle was a stall: Set at God’s right hand on high; With the poor, and mean, and lowly, When like stars His children crowned Lived on earth our Saviour holy. All in white shall wait around. Words C. F. Alexander Music H. J. Gauntlett Ding Dong Merrily on High Vox Cordis First Reading A Politically Correct Christmas Chris Tarrant
God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen Join in at home God rest ye merry, gentlemen, The shepherds at those tidings Let nothing you dismay, Rejoiced much in mind, For Jesus Christ, our Saviour And left their flocks a-feeding, Was born on Christmas day, In tempest, storm and wind, To save us all from Satan’s power, And went to Bethlehem straightway When we were gone astray, This blessed babe to find: O tidings of comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, Comfort and joy O tidings of comfort and joy O tidings of comfort and joy From God our Heavenly Father Now to the Lord sing praises, A blessed angel came, All you within this place, And unto certain shepherds And with true love and brotherhood Brought tidings of the same, Each other now embrace; How that in Bethlehem was born This holy tide of Christmas The Son of God by name: All other doth deface: O tidings of comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, Comfort and joy O tidings of comfort and joy O tidings of comfort and joy Trad. arr. Willcocks Carol of the Bells by Mykola Leontovych Elstree Choir Second Reading Ring Out Loud Bells by Alfred, Lord Tennyson Suki Waterhouse
It came upon the Midnight Clear Join in at home It came upon the midnight clear, Yet with the woes of sin and strife That glorious song of old, The world has suffered long; From angels bending near the earth Beneath the angel-strain have rolled To touch their harps of gold: Two thousand years of wrong; “Peace on the earth, goodwill to men, And man, at war with man, hears not From heaven’s all gracious King!” The love song which they bring; The world in solemn stillness lay O hush the noise, ye men of strife, To hear the angels sing. And hear the angels sing. Still through the cloven skies they come, For lo! the days are hastening on, With peaceful wings unfurled; By prophet bards foretold, And still their heavenly music floats When with the ever-circling years O’er all the weary world: Comes round the age of gold, Above its sad and lowly plains When peace shall over all the earth They bend on hovering wing, Its ancient splendours fling, And ever o’er its Babel sounds And the whole world give back the song The blessed angels sing. Which now the angels sing. Words E. H. Sears Arr. Sullivan Lully Lulla Lullay by Philip Stopford Bradfield Choir Third Reading An excerpt from A Christmas Carol by George Wither Jenna Coleman

Born the King of angels; Sing choirs of angels, O come, let us adore Him, Sing in exultation O come, let us adore Him, Sing all ye citizens of Heav’n above; O come, let us adore Him, ‘Glory to God Christ the Lord!
