WINTER FUN IN MICHIGAN If you want to take winter fun to the next level, then you need to bundle up and head to Zehnder’s in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Zehnder’s is host to one of the biggest snow and ice sculpting events in North America. This years event kicks off on January 22nd and runs through January 27th. If you can’t make it that week, no worries, the sculptures are up until they melt! The sculptures are made by some of the worlds best ice and snow carvers. They also host the National Collegiate Ice Carving Championship and High School Snow Sculpting Competition. There is something for the whole family, as long as you can handle the cold. During the event, attendees can enjoy a warming tent, fireworks, a petting zoo, children’s activities and much more! www.zehnders.com Watching the carvers in action, is really captivating. They use all kinds of gadgets to carve their masterpieces; saws, chisels, ice tongs, jigs and chippers. They can even be seen using random items like brooms, chainsaws, spoons and blow dryers. They will do whatever it takes to bring their sculptures to life.
Michigan Bird Watching January first marks the beginning of bird watching season! This is day one for all the people that like to count birds. The goal is to see how many birds you can see in a whole year. Some people keep a life list and just hope to add a new bird or “Lifer” onto their list. There are others that do what is called “A Big Year” which means spending a whole year trying to see more birds that anyone else. Michigan has some super cool birds. Every January, many people flock to the thumb area to see the Snowy Owls. The owls can be seen sitting on top of telephone poles. Red Polls, Snow Buntings and Horned Larks are a few more winter favorites, along with a wide variety of water fowl. Once Spring rolls in, Michigan has a large variety of colorful warblers that grace the branches of our trees. The Kirtland Warbler, which is quite rare, draws crowds to Michigan from around the country. Tawas, Michigan holds a great Migratory Bird Festival in May; this is fun for the whole family and a great way to get a close look at hundreds of warblers and other species. Fall is a great time to see raptors but no matter which bird you seek, websites, such as ebird.org, can help you locate just about any bird that you wish to see. So on that note, happy birding and spot something rare!
