And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls. And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up in the same. Genesis 41:47-48 Harvest is our time of giving thanks for all God’s blessings on our crops over this ‘summer’ season. It is also a time to think about planning what we want to see grow in the years to come. This year has been more difficult than usual, and although you will always hear farmers say that, whether it has been a good year or not, this year has been particularly challenging. The torrential rain and heavy winds right at the start of the growing season saw early blossoms decimated with orchards and vineyards losing up to 70% of their potential crops. Unsettled weather, moisture and humidity without the full sunshine saw blight hit many other crops. Add to this the complexities of material shortages and working in isolation and this year, most farmers would be fully justified in having a grumble. In times gone by when everything depended on the local Harvest, giving thanks for the Harvest was vital. A failed local harvest meant starvation, so asking for God’s blessing and saying thank you for God’s provision at various points of the year was seen as important. We still depend on farming today for our food, but can draw on harvest from all over the country and beyond. It can be easy to feel disconnected from where our food comes from. Which makes this a perfect opportunity to pray for our farmers and faming communities who are at the mercy of the weather. One of the positives is that the pandemic has reminded us that farmers are key workers and need our support. This is also a good time to ask God’s blessing on our friends and neighbours, many of whom have been hit hard by recent events. Walking around our villages and praying at various points is a positive way of supporting our communities. As we emerge from the pandemic what better way to celebrate than going for a walk together. Giving thanks to God for the countryside and green spaces that have helped us so much during these past months? Harvest isn’t just about a successful ‘gathering in’ but also celebrating good stewardship – the planning, preparing, sowing and caring for the crops and land provide a solid foundation for the future. Good stewardship is vital to the growth of the crops and the success of the farm. It is therefore a good time to reflect on our own stewardship growing sowing and growing as a church. 4
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has walked with us over the last year, those of faith and those who see that the work of our churches can make a difference. By your giving over theses difficult times, and through your generosity, we have been meet the needs of our communities and are able to plan for a successful harvest in years to come for St Peter’s and St Mary’s. Without your occasional and regular giving we would not be able to carry out the pastoral and missional work which has been at the heart of our parishes throughout the pandemic. There is no question that coming out of the pandemic things are going to be tough for our rural churches, resources are depleted and clergy and lay minister’s are thinly dispersed, and I would particularly like to thank Fr Martin Morgan for all his help and support over the last few years at St Peter’s and St Mary’s. If you are able to review your giving in any way this Harvestide it would really help us to plan for the future and secure the work we have been begun, in caring for those who are most in need and by keeping our church doors open. One of the great stewards of the Bible is Joseph, mostly remembered for his amazing coat and prophetic dreams, his incredible leadership and stewardship are regularly overlooked. If you read Genesis 41:46-57; 47:13-26 not only will you realise that it is the foreigner in the land who saves the people, but also that his good stewardship has a wider impact upon the whole world, two lessons we could all do with being reminded of now and again. Genesis 41:57 tells that when the seven years of good harvests came, Joseph developed a stockpiling system to store the grain for use during the coming drought. When the seven years of drought arrived, “Joseph opened the storehouses” and provided enough food to bring the nation through the famine. His wise strategy and effective implementation of the plan even allowed Egypt to supply grain to the rest of the world during the famine This year our Harvest services are at St Mary’s Newick on 3rd October and St Peter’s Chailey on the 10th October, both will be followed with a Harvest lunch and we would love for you to join us in fellowship and thanksgiving. Harvest provides us with the opportunity to praise the Creator God, give thanks for our food and those who produce it; to pray a blessing on the communities in which we live and share together. Let us celebrate however we can, in thankfulness for all we have been given. Don’t forget Alpha Course every Thursday evening at St Peter’s Church 7pm all are welcome If you are considering Confirmation our service at St Mary’s with Bishop Ruth will be on Sunday 28th November and I would love to speak to you about being confirmed, so give me call anytime 01825 723186. Have a great month enjoy the changing seasons, take a friend for a walk and keep in touch. Every Blessing Paul 5

Important Announcement!! Pastoral Distress Fund We have found that a number of Chailey families are struggling, and more recently Newick have been helping them. St Peter’s church has now set up a specific fund to help those families If you feel you can contribute, however little, it would be very much appreciated. This fund is ongoing and donations can be made at anytime to the treasurer or directly to the bank. (Chailey PCC, Sort Code 09-01-55 Account 06923088 Please state ‘Pastoral Care Fund’) Friends Of Chailey Windmill A few months ago we reported that ITV was visiting the Bluebell Railway and Chailey Windmill for a re-make of the 1990's 'Darling Buds of May'. We have had numerous requests asking us to let everyone know when this would be broadcast and have now been told that the series of six programmes, to be called 'The Larkins', will be on ITV in October. The part originally played by David Jason now has Bradley Walsh in the leading role. The production is centred on the Bluebell Railway, in particular Horsted Keynes with its station renamed Littlechurch. Pa Larkin and his family are leading a campaign to prevent the closure of the station. The Windmill comes in when children are taken on an outing there and the Mill is transported from North Chailey to Kingscote by the power of a computer generated image. The Mill and Rural Life Museum are now closed until April 2022. John Smith (01825 723519) 100 Years Ago Organ Recital We may expect a real musical treat on Sunday October 9th. Lieut. W.E. Kemp R.E. is coming to us again and will take the solo parts in the rectal. Those who heard him on the last occasion will not forget the striking rendering of the music he sang. We are also sure that Mr. Sargeant will provide us with a very attractive programme of sacred music. The Recital will commence at 3 p.m. at the Parish Church. The proceeds after paying expenses will be handed to the General Expenses account. Report from the Chailey Women's Institute: The recent Fete at Bineham raised £69 2s. with the Produce Stall making £9 15s 3d, the Tea Stalls £9 17s 6d, Fish Pond £1 9s 9d, Sports and Dancing etc £6 11 5d, Entrance Gate; £12 19s, Sweet Stall £6 9s 2d, and various others making up the grand sum. Many thanks to all who helped and contributed. Note: £70 would now be roughly equivalent to £3,500! Annette Shelford annette@shelford.net 7

Maria Caulfield MP I am pleased to see that East Sussex County Council are currently running a consultation on their Bus Service Improvement Plan as part of the Government’s £3 billion ‘Bus Back Better’ scheme which launched in March 2021. The National Bus Strategy aims to get more people travelling by bus, making these buses a practical and attractive alternative to private cars. We know locally that being in such a rural part of the country that often bus routes are not commercially viable and need significant subsidies to survive. It’s why we are so dependent on community bus routes provided by groups such as Cuckmere Buses and CTLA. The Governments’ Bus Back Better strategy wants bus services to be faster, more reliable, and more frequent and recognises that to make bus routes viable they have to address the needs of the community but also may need subsidies to succeed. With the East Sussex County Council consultation, it is imperative that the public’s views are heard regarding the proposals. Increasing bus travel may also play an important part in the Covid-19 recovery as bus travel has held up more strongly than rail services. Bus services are also central to the Government’s ‘levelling up’ plan, which I know will bring benefits to people across the Country. In addition, I welcome this Improvement Plan as it will play an integral part in achieving the Government’s ambitious net zero target by 2050. The introduction of 4000 battery or hydrogen powered zero-emission buses, provided by £120 million in government funding, will play a key role in the road to the decarbonisation of transport. Each zero- emission bus saves around 46 tonnes of CO2 and can take 75 cars off the road, making a clear contribution towards tackling climate change. Efforts are already underway locally to build an environmentally friendly transport network, with a hydrogen hub planned in Newhaven being funded by the Government through the Town Deal Fund. Work is ongoing with Brighton & Hove buses which has created an innovative and green fleet that has led to the highest bus use per head in England outside of London. I am keen that we improve our bus services locally to connect up our towns and villages and that a more reliable service will be possible. 9
Chailey Commons Society As Summer turned to Autumn it brought with it the brown and gold hues that lovers of Autumn look forward to. The bracken has collapsed again, and the spaces and tracks have opened once more. The cattle which had started grazing on Red House Common have been spreading themselves across the three lower commons and the four Exmoor ponies have Red House Common to themselves again. Grazing is an important part of the management of the heathland and natural trimming of the birch and bramble for example can effectively control their spreading. During the summer, the Society held some events for younger people, and these included a ‘Young Ecologist’ session and our popular Bug Hunt. Despite the cooler and showery weather at the time, we recorded a good range of insects and butterflies such as the Small White, Meadow Brown, Gate Keeper, Small Copper, Small and Large Skipper, Brimstone and Ringlet. The most popular insects seemed to be the Grasshoppers and Crickets that the young eyes keenly spotted together with several other smaller species. Our Late Summer Walk was well attended, and we all enjoyed the lovely display of the widespread pale heather, Calluna vulgaris, known as Ling and the darker Erica cinerea, the bell heather. The third heather Erica tetralix, the Cross leaved heath, flowers earlier in the wetter areas of the heathland. JoJo Way introduced us to surveys and quadrats and included a practical session looking at the plants and flying insects. Thank you if you have been walking your dog and picking up any droppings to the bins provided. This does mean that the commons are a more pleasant and cleaner place to walk. We have been regularly cleaning the drinking troughs as well and ask that they are keep clean for the animals only to drink from. Our activities continue in October with an indoor meeting on Thursday October 14th at 7.30.p.m. in the Chailey Village Hall near the Five Bells pub with a Talk on Butterflies of Sussex by Ian Seccombe. Those of you who have seen Ian’s pictures of these amazing creatures will know that we are in for a treat. We shall still be observing any current regulations for space and cleaning requirements, but it will be great to meet in person once again. Chailey Horticultual Society The society had a very enjoyable afternoon putting on an exhibition of local horticultural and artistic talent. The weather was kind but sadly only a few people came to admire the talent that lies within the community. Hopefully next year will be better for us all. Our next event is the A.G.M. held in the Reading Room at 8pm on Thursday 14th October. Everyone is welcome especially anybody who would like to join the committee. We do need some new and perhaps younger committee members! Refreshments will be provided. Autumn is now well established with shortening days and falling temperatures. However there is still a lot to in those ever dwindling hours of daylight. As the summer crops grown in the greenhouse and poly tunnel come to an end it is a good opportunity to give everything a quick clean and refresh the beds with a good helping of compost. For some reason over wintering crops seem to do better in the poly tunnel rather than the greenhouse . I plant a few garlic and over wintering onions to give an early harvest next year. Winter hardy lettuce will do well and a sowing of The Sutton broad bean will give an early harvest. If well spaced there will be room to plant tomatoes next April or May. Outside plant overwintering beans and peas in late October or early November. Super Aquadulce is the hardiest outside bean but can grow quite tall in the spring. The Sutton is a dwarf variety that over winters well but does benefit from some protection in the coldest weather. The same applies to peas sown at this time such as Meteor and Douce Provence. Beware slugs and birds. Sprout plants may be in need of support as autumn gales approach. Again protect them and other brassicas from the birds. Overwintering onions, garlic and shallots will be showing a lot of growth but as the temperature drops growth slows though the cold weather is essential for good bulb production in garlic. Now is a good time to plant daffodil and narcissi bulbs where a display is required next spring. Plant at the same depth as the size of the bulb. Orchids such as cymbidium should be brought in to a light warm frost free space and flower spikes should start to appear around Christmas. Finish cutting hedges and pruning shrubs. Collect leaves as they fall but try and leave some piles in odd corners of the garden as a haven for wild life. They can be composted but do it loosely and add old newspapers and cardboard to prevent it becoming too compacted and soggy. Don’t be tempted to dig parsnips until there has been a frost as this will aid the conversion 11
of starch to sugars and improve the sweetness and flavour. The same goes for Brussel sprouts. If having bonfires of garden waste always ensure that no hedgehog has taken up residence! Now sit back and enjoy the autumn colours and the first fires of winter. Christmas will soon be upon us. Good gardening Peter Estcourt - 07801179708 - pge44@icloud.com CHAILEY NEWS OCTOBER 2021-09-15 CONTINUED REQUEST FOR MILL LANE – GRADWELL END – MILL BROOKS – SOUTH CHAILEY It has taken me years of persistence to have our review firmly included in November and I apologise for reporting back on so many occasions. I feel strongly that my formal request, on behalf of our community must be honoured. I would urge local residents to put forward their views on the current traffic and parking issues as part of the public consultation. There are hundreds of communities throughout the county of Sussex asking for a review consideration. The last correspondence I had from the Assistant Director Operations was on 29th July 2021 and he writes: ‘…..we are happy to include it for consideration when the next review begins in November’. I have also been asked to include a review of the dropped kerb A275/Mill Lane which is very awkward for wheelchairs – this I have done. OVERGROWN PATHWAYS – SOUTH CHAILEY Thank you to residents who have brought to my attention the overgrown pathways and overhanging branches. It would be helpful of the Brickworks could cut back their hedges and, I have asked the East Sussex County Steward to pay a visit and help clear the actual pathways. Young and old use these pathways – whether they are fit and able or frail or disabled. FLY INFESTATION - CONTINUED Since I wrote in September, this problem persists here in North Chailey and other vil- lages. I apologise to those I have not written to as I was away in August and am work- ing through a great many emails and messages. Just before I went away, I scrambled through the wooded area on the corner of the A275 East Grinstead Road where, some years ago, the sewer broke and produced lakes of human waste. I checked this and nothing was amiss and gave this report and photographs to the Environmental Health Senior Officer at Lewes District Council. Our MP, the Environmental Agency, Southern Water. Lewes District, as well our East Sussex County Councillor is trying hard to find the source/sources/evidence of these infestations. It’s very unpleasan for those of us who cannot open our windows or doors. Cllr Sharon Davy sharon.davy@lewes.gov.uk Home: 01444 831 336 12
Chailey Cricket Club This season has proven to be a very good one, not just by way of the results but our matches have been played with enjoyment, fun and in a friendly Sunday manner. Furthermore, apart from a couple of matches, we have been able to field full and competitive teams which has made the season even more enjoyable. That is not to say more players will not be welcome. New additions to our playing numbers will be very welcome. Please pop along next season and join in the spirit of Chailey cricket. 15 August v Jevington CC – Chailey won by 5 wickets - Jevington CC 153 all out Wickets for Peter Dembrey 2 for 3; James Brooklyn 2 for 25; David Dembrey 2 for 27; Marc Sellis 2 for 49 and Josh Coppard 1 for 12 - Chailey CC 154 for 4 James Brooklyn 53 not out; Josh Coppard 28 not out; Neeraj Bharwani 28 and Mal Harding 19 22 August v Streat & Westmeston CC – Chailey won by 3 wickets - Streat & Westmeston CC 146 all out Main wicket takers Gopi Chandramouli 5 for 15; David Dembrey 2 for 39 - Chailey CC Rajesh R 57 (retired not out); James Brooklyn 22 not out and Peter Dembrey 18. 29 August v W G Gracefully CC – WG won by 106 runs Sadly, because of holidays and unavailability of most of our player, we were unable to field a full team. So, searching the internet we manage to find a club in similar dilemma: Yellow Stump CC. We joined with them in a game that was not necessarily in the spirit of Sunday cricket, but at least we had a game, albeit with 9 players. WG batted first and in their 40 overs compiled 287 for 7! In reply the joint team managed a respectable 181 which was mainly due Marc Sellis (Chailey) who scored 66 and 39 extras! Those extras were swelled by a 15 ball over from one of the WG bowlers. 5 September – sadly our opposition withdrew too late for us to arrange an emergency fixture. 12 September v Felbridge & Sunnyside CC – Chailey won by 68 runs Back to normal with a full Chailey XI in a 40 over game - Chailey CC 216 for 6 (inns closed) Zakir Siddiqui 92; Peter Dembrey 32; Marc Sellis 26 and Chris McKinnon 25 not out (his top score for Chailey). 13
- Felbridge & Sunnyside CC 151 for 8 (inns closed) David Dembrey 3 for 35; Pramendra Shekwarat 2 for 19 and 1 each for 3 other bowlers. Mal Harding 2 stumpings Finally for this month we were sad to hear of the passing of Margaret Clarkson, wife of a late stalwart Chailey cricketer: Roy. For a long time, when our ground was at Row Heath, Margaret was one of our regular ‘tea ladies’. Thank you, Margaret, and although a little late, sincere condolences to Carol, Michael and families. Chailey Cricket Club – your Sunday village cricket club www.chailey.play-cricket.com Chailey Parish Council After a very short summer break, Chailey Parish Council have now resumed their parish council meetings which are currently being held at St Peter’s Church, Chailey Green, starting at 7.30pm. Planning & Environment meetings take place on the first Tuesday of the month. Full Council meetings take place on the third Tuesday of the month. However, please note that the Full Council meeting in October will be held on Wednesday 20th October. Anyone is welcome to attend, but it would be very helpful if you could inform the Clerk of your attendance prior to the meeting. Please contact on 01825 722388 or email at chaileypc@btconnect.com Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 5th October in the Village Hall, beginning for this month only at 7.15 pm instead of the usual 7.30 pm This is so that we can have a super-quick AGM, as we are obliged to do in October, before our speaker and the start of the meeting. We will be hearing about ''Lancing College and its Local History' from Dr Janet Pennington, who will be our first speaker since March 2020. September saw our first meeting in the Hall and we all enjoyed seeing friends we had not met up with properly for a long time. We were also delighted to welcome some new members. In September the outing to Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens, with a Flower Festival too, took place fortunately just at the end of the mini heat wave so we were able to enjoy the gardens in comfort. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall, when we are always very pleased to welcome prospective members and guests. Margaret Smith (01825 723519) 14
