LOOKING BACK AT TRENDS FROM CES 2019:

2019 TRENDS DID IT TAKE OFF? WHAT HAPPENED?

5G hit cities worldwide as mobile network and handset providers battled to be the first to
5G market. The only problem? They forgot to educate customers on the opportunity! 2020 will
change this as consumers realise the HUGE impact of 5G.

SOUND & In 2019 we moved beyond smart speakers to voice enabled devices. As the year went on

BRINGING TECHNOLOGY TO EVERYONE
Traditionally, technology development has been somewhat focused on meeting the needs of a
relatively narrow group of individuals. However, in 2020 we’ve seen a step change here with
recognition that differing consumer groups have differing technology needs. We’ve observed
products designed to make all sorts of activities more inclusive and promote independence.
It’s a promising and exciting market.

Sarcos’s Guardian
XO
Ironman here we come!

Sarcos showed off their suit,
called the Guardian XO,
which is essentially a robot
that workers wear. It enables
average people to lift and
expertly manipulate loads
well in excess of 100 pounds
using natural body
movements. It’s like wearing
a forklift! The exoskeleton
lets an employee lift up to
200 pounds repeatedly for
up to eight hours at a time
without strain or fatigue. One
obvious application is
loading cargo, a job that's
familiar in the airline industry.

Korean-based robotics
company Torooc showed off
Liku — an emotional
companion robot that gets to
know its owner over time. Its
forehead camera allows it to
recognise its owner’s mood,
signalling it to react with a
corresponding behaviour. If
you enter the room and
greet Liku, it will turn its
head toward you, make eye
contact and offer a smile in
return. It has five emotions,
including pleasant,
unpleasant, alarming, crying,
and sleeping. LikU can even
pose for selfies when you
point a camera at it.

models of seafood, gluten,
nut milk and egg and it can
detect 8 different allergens
at the same time.
The device is keychain-sized
making it easy to carry
anywhere. It connects to
smartphones through
Bluetooth and the app has
an AI model that helps the
consumer to calculate the
amount of allergen they
have already eaten.
BrainCo Mind
Control
BrainCo got attention for its
Scalextric slot cars that are
controlled by the brain, going
faster the harder you
concentrate. Attendees wore
headbands based on
medical brain-scanning tech
to race model cars. But
BrainCo’s real aim is
different; it also displayed
the final version of an AI-
powered prosthetic hand for
amputees that works with
both brain waves and
muscle signals. The firm has
also suggested that the
headbands could be used to
control smart devices or
scan for diseases.
DEMOCRATISING AND QUANTIFYING HEALTH
Building on CES 2019 we have seen a lot of new and exciting health and wellbeing tools on
exhibition. These have been less about medical necessities and more about improving people’s
daily lives and addressing the mass market. We saw everything from smart mirrors to smart beds,
                                       to smart vibrators!

IMPROVING MOBILITY AND ACCESS TO IT
It wouldn’t be CES without the discussion and unveiling of new mobility options, especially around the topic
of autonomous vehicles. However, this year’s focus was not on large autonomous vehicles but instead the
focus was on smaller, more flexible vehicles that help solve the ‘last mile’ problem. And when it came to
those larger autonomous vehicles, the show’s focus was on improving safety and providing activities that
passengers can partake in when inside the self-driving cars. Honda and Sony in particular have shown off
concept cars that keep the traveller entertained and safe whilst in the car.

developed with Uber. The S-
A1 concept is a four person
electric aircraft designed for
short urban journeys made
possible by helicopter-style
vertical take-off and landing.

Pilots will be needed at first,
but in the long run it’s
envisaged that S-A1s and
other Uber Elevate air taxis
will operate autonomously and
will reach speeds of 180mph.
Hyundai Hubs &
PBVs
Hyundai also announced
concepts for smart urban
transport ‘Hubs’ and ground-
based Purpose Built Vehicles
(PBV). Loosely based on the
appearance of San Francisco’s
famous cable cars, the PBV is
a new take on the taxi that
functions as a living space,
restaurant or coffee shop too.
They’re autonomous and can
operate either individually or in
convoy. They are of course
electric and will charge en
route, using networked AI to
hook up with dedicated
charging PBVs as they go. The

ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE AND
               RESOURCE SCARCITY
2019; the year that Extinction Rebellion took over cities across the globe and the year that Greta
Thunberg was named person of the year by Time magazine. It was a big year for global progress
around climate change and sustainability and that is reflected in a lot of the CES 2020 technologies.
From sustainable food to more efficient machinery/tools there was a lot on offer with promise of even
                                      more to come next year.

Impossible Foods
Pork Sausage

We all know that it’s hard to
beat the real deal when it
comes to sausages, but
Impossible Foods have
launched a product at CES
for the second year in a row;
this year launching its plant-
based alternative to Pork.

It comes in the form of
sausages as well as a
minced meat substitute that
can be used in a wide range
of dishes. It is aimed at
those cutting down on meat
consumption for health and
sustainability.
Green Systems
Flexfuel
Green Systems Automotives
presented a connected and
integrated Flexfuel
conversion device that
reduces two-wheeler
greenhouses gas emissions
making them more
sustainable. The device
change motorbikes,
scooters, sea scooters,
snowmobiles, watercrafts,
ATVs etc. into a real FFV
(Flex Fuel Vehicle) allowing
users to run their vehicle
with biofuel Ethanol/E85.
This is clean-burning and it
substantially reduces CO
and CO2 emissions
compared to conventional
fuel.
Juno 'reverse
microwave oven'
A reverse microwave? That’s
right, a machine that rapidly
chills packaged drinks.

The start-up involved hopes
to launch Juno later this year
to cool cans and bottles of
drink at point of use in just
90 seconds, meaning they
do not need to be stored in
refrigerators in advance. The
machine uses thermal
engineering and material
science meaning it is
electricity based and has no
environmental harm. Their
aim is to replace hotel mini
fridges to save on electricity
and space.
Oxicool; First A/C
unit that uses H2O
The OxiCool is a zero-
emission air conditioner that
chills your house with water.

Traditional A/Cs use
refrigerants that transition
between liquid and gas,
absorbing and releasing heat
over and over again. The
cold air gets pumped into the
house, while the excess heat
is routed outdoors. They
aren’t good for the
environment and release
carbon dioxide. The OxiCool
uses H2O instead and is a
closed-loop system,
