Celebrate Father’s Day on June 17th 2018 Father’s Day is celebrated this year on June 17th in UK and Ireland, USA, Canada, S. Africa and Japan In Australia and New Zealand Father’s Day is on the first Sunday in September. In Thailand it is celebrated on December 5, which is the birthday of the country’s late king. Thais pay respect to their father and grandfather, often offering them a canna flower, similar to a lily and known in Thai as dok phuttha raksa (ดอกพุทธรักษา). Dads in Brazil are honoured on the second Sunday of August. “After hearing a sermon about Mother's Day in 1909, in Washington, USA, a young girl called Sonora Smart Dodd, told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honouring them. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father's birthday, the pastors did not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. Several local clergymen accepted the idea, and on 19 June 1910, the first Father's Day; sermons honouring fathers were presented throughout the city." 1|Page
Father’s Day is one of those ‘out of the ordinary’ days when everyone gets a chance to show their father/grandfather in their own way how much they love them. Discuss with the children how they could make the day special. At home (with Mum’s help) they could start the day by making Dad or Grandad an ‘interesting’ breakfast! They could make a personal card or present or just enjoy a memorable day together. In school you could perhaps organise a ‘Father’s Day’ Picnic Breakfast The children could draw, decorate, write invitations and help with the preparation of the food. Invite Mums & Dads in to help and the children could sing a couple of Father’s Day songs or recite a poem. (See pages 17, 18 & 19) Leave a basket for donations to help cover costs (although check school policy) FUN GAMES: Finish the picnic with the game Pop the Balloon from: Teach Easy Resources. Tie a balloon onto the leg of the dad & the child and they have to pop each other’s balloon by stomping on it. Other fun games to play could include: a three legged race, toss the beanbag and tug of war. 2|Page
Together with the children plan a menu for the breakfast picnic – for example: Fresh orange juice or smoothies Muesli, fruit and yogurt cups or fruit kebabs Cereals Breakfast pizza Selection of muffins /bread, butter and jams 3|Page

Make a Garden Plaque – Click on the plaque to follow the link The children can make this garden plaque extra special with all their treasures and give it to Dad as a very special gift! Materials: Plaster of Paris Aluminium pie case Shells, pebbles, acrylic gems, marbles or other water-resistant treasures to decorate. Instructions: Organise this as a group activity of 5/6 children with an adult supporting. Children to decide on the items they are going to use and collect them in a container. They write their name on a sticky label to stick on to the outside of their pie dish. Using the template (below) they design with a pencil/crayon where they are going to place the items on their plaque. The design remains with the child as they make their plaque so they can refer to it. Cover a surface to work on and have aprons ready for the children to wear. Mix up the Plaster of Paris in an old basin according to the instructions on the packet. Pour into the individual pie cases. Plaster of Paris dries quickly. Children to lay their decoration carefully on top (note: the items will sink a little no matter how carefully they do this; if they are too rough they will sink a lot!) Leave to dry for a couple of hours and then remove the plaque from the pie tray. An interesting gift for Dad to put in a special place. The pebbly version! 11 | P a g e
