OLLI plays an essential role in bringing critical information to its
members and others in the Ann Arbor community. The Medical Ethics
101 lectures of February 2021 align squarely with this role, addressing
the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as end-of-life
care. We are deeply appreciative of the work of OLLI as well as the
opportunity presented to us to dedicate these lectures to the selfless
healthcare workers in Ann Arbor who cared for the pandemic victims.

DEI
    OLLI-UM
    DIVERSITY, EQUITY,
    AND INCLUSION
OLLI-UM is a community program of the Geriatrics Center.

In 2019, OLLI-UM adopted a strategic plan that mandated the creation of our own Diversity,
Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee in order to ensure that DEI values would be infused
throughout our program at every level. The committee drafted a mission statement which is
detailed below. Our goal was to lay out a road map for the program and ourselves, so that we
would be accountable in realizing our objectives.

DEI MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the DEI Committee is to increase the diversity of OLLI membership and create
an environment that welcomes all; increase awareness of racial, social, economic, educational
and health disparities experienced by marginalized communities; encourage members
self- education and self-reflection on issues related to implicit bias; and promote positive,
transformational change leading to the eradication of racial and social injustice in ourselves, the
OLLI membership, and the community-at-large.

We will do this through:
    • Spearheading efforts that lead to continuing awareness and education of our members on
issues related to racial and social inequities through lectures, workshops, book discussions,
and study groups, and encouraging members to initiate their own self-education on these
      issues.
    • Working closely with other OLLI committees to ensure DEI principles are infused and
      integrated throughout the organization.
    • Working as a bloc or as individuals to help influence formal and informal policies that can be
      implemented to effect positive change.
    • Partnering with other organizations and committees with similar aims internal and external
to U-M to collaborate on relevant programming and initiatives.
    • Evaluating strategies wherever possible in order to identify positive and negative outcomes
such that initiatives can either be continued or improved upon.

Zoom is a video conferencing platform that provides high definition, interactive collaboration
tools for communication. To access Zoom, you will need a laptop or desktop (Windows or Mac),
tablet or smartphone (iPhone or Android.) The following equipment will enhance your
     experience:

WEB CAMERA: A camera will increase your connection with the instructor and your peers by
allowing you to see each other face-to-face. If you don’t have access to a web camera, you will still
be able to see the instructor.

MICROPHONE: This will let you be heard during your class. You don’t need fancy equipment; It can
be headphones with a microphone incorporated and if using your smartphone you can use the
headphones and microphone that came with your smartphone. Many modern computers have a
microphone built in.

IF YOU HAVEN’T USED ZOOM BEFORE, ALLOW ABOUT 15 MINUTES FOR SETUP BEFORE FIRST USE.
• Using a laptop or desktop: Download the FREE and secure Zoom program to your computer.
• Using a tablet or smartphone: Download the free and secure Zoom application from the app store.

The Changing Relationship Between Policing
and Communities
Reverend Mashod A. Evans, Sr.

In 2019, the Ann Arbor’s City Council formed the
Independent Community Police Oversight Commission.
Within the first year of its existence, the death of Ahmad
Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and others would
bring the discussion of Police Oversight onto the national
stage. This talk will focus on the experiences and reflection
of an inaugural member of the Independent Community
Police Oversight Commission, through the lenses of an
African American faith leader.

We each have our own reasons for enjoying OLLI! But whatever
your OLLI passion, your financial support can make a difference in
ensuring that OLLI continues to flourish and expand.

      • OLLI was there for you when you needed it most this year
IF • you appreciate OLLI’s low fees and scholarships to those in need…
      • you are proud of how OLLI responded during the pandemic so The BlueNote Vocal Jazz

There Are two main ways to give:

OLLI-UMs Annual Fund (helps with today’s needs!)
While OLLI receives generous in-kind support from UM, a gift to the OLLI Annual Fund ensures
membership and events remain affordable and available to all. While OLLI members and volunteers
provide a strong foundation of skills, annual support from donors is needed to maintain and grow
operations and meet the needs of our community. Donors contributing $100 or more annually are
listed on the OLLI Donor Honor Roll. Sponsorships of lectures also support the Annual -Fund and
sponsors are included on the Honor Roll listing.

Friends of OLLI-UM Endowment (helps sustain OLLI’s future needs!)
The Friends of OLLI Endowment was created to ensure OLLI will continue to enrich the lives of
others well into the future. Endowment funds are key to ensuring the flexibility of OLLI to respond to
current and future needs such as technology, space, programs and access.

MICHIGAN OLLIs COLLABORATE
On December 8, OLLI at Saginaw Valley State University,
completes the programming with Dr. J of the Michigan Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame. Dr. J will delve into the twisted life, career,
and death of boy rocker Frankie Lymon, the lead singer of the
                            Teenagers (1954-Present), America’s first all-teenage rock and
                            roll group.

Lymon’s soprano voice made audiences swoon. He sang The Teenagers’ first and biggest hit,
“Why Do Fools Fall in Love” at just 13 years of age. It reached number six on Billboard’s Pop
Singles Chart, and was later covered by The Beach Boys, Diana Ross, and many more. Dr. J
leads the way through the dramatic twists and turns of Lymon’s life after this smash hit, into
a failed solo career, heroin addiction, three wives, and one unmarked grave.

These four Michigan OLLIs are only a small sampling of the 124 total Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes thriving
across the United States. All were spearheaded and funded by Bernard Osher, a former art dealer, now in his 90’s and
still passionate about opportunities to learn during retirement. He believes in giving monies, then letting each OLLI do
what its volunteers do best, which may vary from region to region. He sponsors the Osher National Resource Center,
which provides an online wealth of information about OLLI programming and available expertise. OLLI-UM has 235
volunteers and a membership of 1,700.

• The events described above are free to members of the four participating Michigan OLLIs and their guests.
• They will take place online, in the Commons, and they are listed on the Commons Calendar for
     easy reference.
• Registration is required through the OLLI at University of Michigan website, in the Course Catalog, so that
a Zoom link can be sent to your email.
• There is no charge for membership or to join the programming.

Don’t miss these exciting events highlighting the arts in different
regions of Michigan, all brought right into your living room!
If you have questions about online registration or using Zoom, email olli.info@umich.edu or call (734) 998-9351.
